About reading words consisting of Kanji strings, are there any tricks?

Sometimes they are really easy like 説明会 if you know 説明 and 会 it's obvious what it means.

It depends on what you mean by "tricks". You can accurately guess the meaning and reading if you already know lots of compounds with those kanji, but irregular readings are inevitable.

Long strings of kanji are almost always just individual words put together. For example, 未確認飛行物体 is just 未確認 unidentified 飛行 flying 物体 object. Not hard at all.

It's kind of difficult because you'd have to have read the VNs on that chart to know where to put other VNs.
Plus difficulty varies a lot within a single long VN, like with Majikoi some parts are simple SoL and some parts are complex fight scenes or complicated comedy references. So it's hard to say "this VN is harder than Majikoi" when some parts are easier and some parts are harder. The 5 VNs are far enough apart that you can definitively draw a line there, but with more VNs it would be pretty tough.

I also considered looking into games to shift around, but I've only played two of the games on the list, so I don't know whether any of my replacements would be appropriate. Having to read lots of VNs to do something like this really does complicate things, especially since you can't judge ones you read early on in your studies that well.

That's a bit of a difficult request because one would have to have read those VNs to be able to compare them to other VNs, and since this is a learning thread, most people here don't have that much experience with untranslated VNs.
I'm reading 蒼の彼方 as my first VN and it's fairly simple, but I don't know how it stacks up against Hanahira, Fureraba, Flyable Heart, Axanael or other commonly recommended beginner VNs.

Is there any reason why the Core lady pronounces 旅客機　as りょかっき both as a solo word and in the sentence? りょかくき is the listed spelling on the card and the primary spelling on rikai/jisho.

I'm doing okay. Obviously I need a dictionary but I'm not having much trouble so far, although I've only read 3 or 4 hours, which I guess amounts to 1-2 hours in native reading speed. I don't know what it's called or how to explain it in proper terms, but くき seems to be interchangeable with っき in some cases. 洗濯機 is another example.

If an unvoiced syllable in the middle of a word is sufficiently hard to pronounce doesn't doesn't play an important morphological function, it may be reduced to っ. Especially common with つ, but can happen with other syllables as well.

Grammarians try defining rules for when this happens, but they only explain most of the cases, not absolutely all of them, and don't cover weird dialects either.

Not enough. From my experience lots of exposure helps you with patterns of that sort (works with grammar too). Use the language, read more etc. and you'll get there.

Now, I'm not really discrediting Classical Chinese altogether though. If you want to go hardcore and read ancient Japanese literature, you'll have to learn Kanbun which is just a modified version of Classical Chinese. Knowing Chinese is definitely helpful but the reverse is also true. I'd suggest focusing on Japanese for now and if you ever feel like learning Chinese in the future for whatever reason, your knowledge of Japanese is going to help you with all the stuff the two languages share (such as kanji compounds).

I read Flyable Heart, Fureraba, and Himawari beforehand (each of those is about the same). My reading speed for Saya was about half what it was for those games. Lots of uncommon words and complex sentences. It's short and dense though.

Interesting you think Himawari is about the same as Flyable Heart and Fureraba, I would rate it a fair bit harder. It covers more complex topics, uses more floral language, has stronger and more relevant themes and plot. Not something I'd feel comfortable recommending to beginners at all.

How important is learning radicals for figuring out kanji? I've been going back and forth with both, but as I'm learning harder kanji, it's becoming difficult to just memorize then since they have so much going on in them. Breaking it down to radicals I think helps a little bit, but in some cases the meaning from the radicals don't match what the word actually is.

Since people were arguing about the length of a VN mattering or not for beginners, as a beginner I would definitely prefer shorter VNs. It's better to experience a variety of different writing styles and settings (different vocab) than to be stuck in the same one for a long time.

You're better off sticking to your studies, until you either learn the nuances for yourself, or reach the point where you are able and willing to read Japanese materials explaining them.

From personal experience, my learning took off after years of stagnation the day I decided to fight through through a raw text that had no English translation available.

I'm almost burning out from doing my core10k reps and learning new 20 kanji daily. I have only started doing it for about a month. I tried to read yotsuba, or easy VN recommended here for a change, but it's pretty hard for me (almost have to look one or two words every sentences). Any suggestion anons?

Hello, I recently started learning japanese, and i stumbled upon the following: The difference between 行かない? and いかない?.
on the NHK-world site / easy japanese. 行かない? means "ikanai?" / wont you go? But what is the difference with いかない? wich also means ikanai?
When i put 行かない and いかない in translate it translates to "will not go" and the other to "do not go"
But arent both also pronounced the same? How do i distinguish them?

As of right now, that's a grammatically correct sentence that's saying you're improving the Japanese language a little. Assuming you want to say your Japanese is improving a little, you'll probably want to say something like (私の)日本語力が少し上がっています.

Well a class may be good if you use it to meet people and get some practice buddies. The content will probably not be that helpful, but if you can make some connections that will go a long way.

Personally my biggest issue in the past has been that rote memorization does nothing for me and I have to actually apply what I'm learning. Do you have some project you can work when where learning Japanese is a means to an end? Right now I'm playing Final Fantasy, which simultaneously really helpful for learning katakana, but also a bitch as a matter of it not using Kanji, so trying to separate words from particles is a challenge. Doesn't help that my vocabulary and grammar suck to begin with, but the fact I'm doing something with what I'm trying to learn has been a huge motivator.

If you have a smartphone with voice command, you might try setting it to Japanese for simple practice. I did that yesterday, and while I mostly get Siri to tell me わかりません, I'm hoping she'll respond better when I stop babbling like an idiot.

It's that time of year again when people are signing up for college classes. If you're thinking of taking a Japanese class, reconsider. Yes, you will learn some things you didn't know if the teacher is good (mine also lived in Japan and married a Japanese woman so he has experience in the language on a daily basis). However, I studied Japanese for about 6 months before the class started and we only ever covered what I learned in the first month. I could have passed the final on the first day with ease. I don't personally regret taking the class because I needed the language credit and I also got contact information with some cute Japanese girls, but I it is something to think about before signing up for the class: Do you want to spend a month learning kana? Do you want to only get to learning what verbs are after the mid-term exam? Think about those things. If anything it's a good review for simple concepts, but you're not going to learn anything at a decent pace. If you have motivation issues it would be a help though.

I've been studying for 2 months and just started Hanahira and I'm embarrassed at how slow I'm reading it. Scenes can take 1-1.5 hours and I feel like it's because I'm spending too much time breaking most sentences down to understand exactly how the sentence is formed grammatically. Is this a bad thing? Should I just be moving on once I have the gist of a sentence rather than fully confirm its structure and meaning? I want to read faster, but I feel like it won't advance my learning as much.
