That cute little road you were traveling on, with all its unique characteristics and intimate charm, has turned into a denpa highway of blurred machinery and noise. The general public will now rejoice in the distribution of a more streamlined and consumer-friendly product.

You're right, I did a bit more digging and found that the album was completely sold out. They're relatively obscure so they probably haven't printed more copies since.

By the way, it seems they're sharing one of their older releases for free on mediafire (also available for digital purchase on Bandcamp)

Why don't you guys like her again?
>>
>>16366169

I think most people in these threads like her just fine there's just like one or two people that sperg out whenever she's mentioned because they think she's too mainstream/not trudenpa for whatever reason.
>>
>>16366169
I'm sure most of us like her. As >>16366185 said, it is only one or two anons doing it.
>>
>>16366169
For one, I can't get past her grating voice to dislike her for anything else. The fact that she's so popular just adds to the perplexity.

>>16366185
>>16366716
Please. The fact that you are jumping ahead of a question that is clearly not meant for you is expressive of some insecurity that I don't understand. If in your mind it is only a few people who dislike her, then why act so threatened? Stop trying to clear the air of negative opinions in these threads; they are no less valuable than the popular one, as evidenced by the person who asked the question.
>>
>>16366185
tbf. I posted >>16357305 as an ironic shitpost. Sorry.

That said, I don't find her music all that interesting, and new ななひら is not something I usually look forward to at events. The songs she makes on collab albums are also usually not the best on them, and her solo albums are pretty meh.
>>
>>16366799
People whose opinion is formed around a popular belief (nanahira is great: she must be in order to have such a huge following) will feel agitated more easily by an outside threat, because that opinion wasn't centrally formed by the individual's belief.
>>
>>16366865
That is why it's so easy to pass garbage music on to the masses, most people are looking to the majority opinion to feel affirmed.
>>
>>16366898
That is why trudenpa is something so DIFFERENT!

>>16366799
>>16366865
>>16366898
>>16366902
Keeps shitting up threads singlehandedly and the overwhelming hate whenever she's brought up is almost surely all from him and maybe one or two other people.
>>
>>16366865
Literally nobody within the small niche audience of denpa thinks this way.
>>
>>16367025
You would think... but just because we're into some weird music doesn't separate some from normal human tendencies.
>>
>>16367025
>small niche audience

her video views (and just using ななひら by example) can get into the tens and hundreds of thousands so it's probably bigger than you think
>>
>>16367151
So denpa's now mainstream?
Fuck this, I'm moving back to obscure 70's German prog rock.

Is this proto-denpa?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrNcsouDBMA
>>
>>16367151
>>16367764
Maybe because a considerable part of Nanahira's following aren't denpa fans. If they were, and listened to denpa, most denpa from other artists would also get tons of views, and denpa in general would be popular; but the fact that only Nanahira gets the views means that these people are outside of this niche and aren't representative of it by no means. Them getting defensive and in denial whenever someone mentions that people who don't like her exist only worsens their image, which is already shit (see Bemani players' opinion of Nanahira and Nanahira fans; I'm sure you'll notice it's not just "one or two people that sperg out" out there).

Personally, I used to like her when she released her first album (ゴキゲン77゚↑, Right Now was especially great) but her voice and usual style just got old fast for me and I'm ambivalent now. She releases some decent songs once in a while, though.

Just checking in to say that it's NOT 1-2 people who dislike Nanahira in this thread. I liked her at first but after listening to denpa for a few years I got tired of her, for various legitimate reasons that have already been metionned. However, I do not participate in these nanahira wars in here because it's pointless. In my opinion, both sides are to blame. Nanahira fags should shut the fuck up sometimes instead of linking the same old songs everybody here has heard, or making posts like >>16366976, but the nana haters should just ignore them.

Now, we should stop talking about this and rejoice that >>16369365 is saving the year. Thanks a lot man, these will all be very appreciated, even the albums I find shitty and end up deleting after one listen.

Thanks for weighing in with the explanations and advice. I kid a lot with some of the people on here about Nanahira because to me they are the ones who are being obnoxious. Considering denpa to be like a big pie that is comprised of a variety of different slices, it is pretty disgusting to see that so much is being drooled over by fans of just one artist.
>>
>>16370580

I've never seen people drooling over nanahira other than obviously fake posts like >>16366976
(which are probably by the same dude who always complains about her trying to prove his own point). It's always someone linking one of her songs or bringing up an album then the same guy having an autism fit about how she's ruining denpa. I wouldn't be surprised if he's consistently samefagging support for his own posts, there are certainly a lot of people who claim to not be him but write in a very similar style. Honestly I'm halfway convinced you're him too but maybe I'm being overly paranoid.

It's ridiculous to say she's super popular just because some of her videos have a decent amount of views, she doesn't even have an english wikipedia page for gods sake she's hardly a superstar. Not to mention that all sorts of people compose the songs she sings in so defining any music with her name on it as bad denpa just shows how little people care about the music and how much their opinion is based off of reputations and names.
>>

The lyrics are about her pet cat, from the cat's point of view. Just simple things like the cat asking for food or wanting to play. And how they can communicate despite not speaking the same language or being the same species. Very cute, I just love this release. And I love the drawings and simple animations she made too!

I don't know, despite an instinct to say "yes". Everything about her work feels full of passion and has a uniqueness, though. Very unusual, and so...difficult to relate to what all is being considered "denpasong" nowadays. She labels her stuff to be, in part, denpa, and I think that actually has much to do with music's powerful communicative effects rather than just how denpa gets typically characterized by what are the sounds/lyrics like. With emamouse it feels true, the deeper and deeper you go. To me, she is the real deal.

I agree. It is some sort of hipster phenomenon where people are afraid that something will become too popular or non-exclusive. It's the same mentality when people only want to drink microbrewery beer.

Japanese denpa culture, on the other hand, is very inclusive. Most people involved know, or have at least met, each other. People often know each others songs by heart etc. It is such a small community that it is absolutely ridiculous when people in other countries, who are not involved in it, try to exclude some parts of it based on arbitrary critera that the creators themselves do not agree upon. And not to mention, disrespectful.
>>
>>16415411
It's mostly hipster elitism, by people who don't understand the language even a little, usually. A lot of the criticisms, if you can even call them that, are based on how a song sounds, or who sings it. It may also seem like a way to fit in, because that is the only way they know how to demonstrate any sort of expertise in a subject.

I'm not a denpa expert and I'm not a master of Japanese, and with especially with denpa there's things that go over my head. But I enjoy what I do understand.

5.jpg
264KB, 2048x1536px
>>16415632
I have also noticed this. The people who complain and try to be some sort of elitist authorities do not seem to have a clue about song meanings, well-known memes, interpersonal relations in the scene etc. Being extra aggressive or rude about their views seem to be some way of trying to compensate for not understanding fully what they see or hear.

Also, they usually badmouth individual vocalists, even though the vocalists do songs that range from mainstream pop to extreme dissonant denpa stuff. All while ignoring that the individual composers have more to do with the style and contents of a song.
>>
>>16415668
It's most likely because some do sing mainstream pop. Because they know so little, it's the only thing they can criticize. And because they don't know who produces the music or who writes the lyrics, they fall back on the idea that, like a lot of hipster western music (I'm assuming), the singer does everything. Now there probably are some that do, but the ones usually mentioned do not.

Strawman. You're comparing an event where you go to have fun to a message board meant for discussion and arguing? This is like asking "In Comiket not a single asshole is around to complain about tastes in anime so why do people do it on the Internet?" The context is completely different and I'm perplexed as to why I should be even explaining this.

Also this is nothing. In Japanese internet arguing about the definition of denpa was common in 2ch threads. See image.
Even the creator of the 笑える電波ソングを集めるガイドライン had to ask everyone to stop arguing about it back then.

In wikipedia there was also a lot of arguing in the talk page that ultimately lead to the 電波ソング page to be deleted.
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ノート%3A電波ソング時代の過去ログ

黒めだか also mentioned this and he liked the English denpa song article for being concise. I also remember him saying he liked how we didn't worry about that much compared to the Japanese.
http://sciandeng.blog38.fc2.com/blog-entry-622.html
mossya had a similar opinion.
https://twitter.com/moss_me/status/333958319104471040

In the comments of the video article a big part of the comments are also just questions whether the songs are denpa or not.
http://dic.nicovideo.jp/b/a/電波ソング/1-

(By the way the nicovideo article is a lot more detailed now, I actually feel like translating this.
http://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/電波ソング)

Also this is what happens when japs get asked to post denpa songs, that's variety:
http://chaos2ch.com/archives/2712150.html
Listen to more stuff and stop getting so defensive about this.

In short if we hypothetically had a denpa event here in the west I'm sure no one would be there arguing about the denpa definition like a sperg. Don't blame us for something we haven't done because you sound like a fucking weeaboo.

They are kinda out of hand with the pricing of their singles at doujin events in my opinion... They charge more for a single than other circles do for a full album. I get they want to make a living off the sales and they are important to the history of denpa music... But when they sell as a circle and not commercial booth, you can't help but compare the prices to the other fellow circles around them... I haven't bought their releases the past few events because of that.

>>
What can be said about these kinds of shows that take place in Japan, they seem altogether sad and sweet. This isn't denpa btw so I'm probably misguided to post it here, nevertheless it is a very cute performance (with a climactic end to the song) and there are some other videos from this channel as well featuring older performances of Birdtune material in the same type of setting. https://youtu.be/5bgaf3wyuf0
>>
>>16415393
For the record, this event is for doujin music, not denpa music specifically. But the organizer and DJs all like denpa music, so it ends up tending very strongly in that direction.

They do argue about what is or isn't denpa a lot in Japan too. "trudenpa" (non-moe denpa about crazy stuff) is called "real-kei" denpa. But the arguments rarely involve that, because the term "denpa song" (as opposed to just occasionally calling music "denpa" as an adjective or "real-kei denpa" without "song") came into existence to describe the over the top moe music for erogames.

I think I've finally thought up how to explain why "moe" music is "denpa" to English speakers. When you don't speak the language, you are mostly missing the "cringe" aspect of moe denpa music. Imagine a lady from your country, in your language, singing lyrics like "i wuv you master meowow!" and you can maybe understand it a little better. This is how the term denpa was originally used mockingly - the music was considered so cringey and embarrassing with their blatant pandering, only a crazy (denpa) person on a different wavelength could appreciate it. I think a lot of foreigners are only exposed to Japanese through anime, so it becomes the language of the fantasy, anime world, and is more resistant to that cringe effect because of it. (Not saying this to badmouth those whose exposure to Japanese is through anime.) This is not the only way for a song to be denpa - but it is why many moe songs are called denpa.

Because of this, in my experience at least, the main argument of what is denpa or not is based on if it's funny / cringey / cheesey enough. The argument of "that's not denpa" is usually from a "that song is too good to denpa" rather than "that song isn't good enough to be denpa." An example would be true my heart from ave;new. The song was made to be a regular song, not to be over the top like the ave;new project songs, but it got lumped in with the denpa songs due to people mishearing the lyrics and making it into a meme. So some people say the "comical" aspect is forced onto the song from the meme, and the song lacks any denpa aspect on its own, and it's disrespectful to poke fun at this song by calling it a denpa song.

UNDER17 and MOSAIC.WAV all were a couple of the early artists to have their music called "denpa song" and they rejected this term - yes even MOSAIC.WAV, who instead insisted on "A-POP." Momoi Haruko also spoke at one of her concerts and on her radio show about how she didn't like the term denpa song and the mocking comments she got online, since she made her songs in all sincerity, not to be funny. However, on a later radio episode, she said she would make a denpa song using contributions from the radio listeners. (The song is Cue!) So she seems to have softened her opinion on the term too.

In my opinion it is thanks to great artists like Momoi and MOSAIC.WAV who put real talent and thought into their otaku music, rather than just trying to create a throwaway gag song, that denpa song music was able to influence mainstream music - and this has caused the umbrella of what is considered denpa to expand. They were on the cutting edge and stood their ground despite the haters. However now and then, one thing is the same - everybody feels denpa a little differently. So try and have a little patience with those who are on a different wavelength than you. Moe and denpa are good buddies with each other.
>>
>>16423116
I am forced to focus on the music itself since I don't understand the lyrics, so my interpretation of good denpa will exclude any pop, mainstream, or trendy sounds that aren't used ironically or are just implemented in a dull, generic, and predictable way. Song structures can even be interesting when they are standard, if they just have some spark of ingenuity in the melody, rhythm, or any slight weirdness to set it off. That's like the lightning bolt of denpa when it hits me.
>>
>>16423266
That's fine if that's what makes you feel denpa. Just understand others are feeling it from lyrics and voices too.
>>
>>16423273
Oh, thanks! I will!
>>
>>16423116
What about this moe >>16417342? Is there anything intentionally cringe about it that I'm missing? How does it fit into denpa?

>>
>>16423395

https://comfy.moe/ghflqq.jpg
>>
>>16423315
First, keep in mind the cringe aspect doesn't have to be intentional. Even the creator of Miko Miko Nurse said he never meant to make a denpa song until Dako Shite Gyu.

Personally I don't feel a lot of denpa from this album. I think the strongest element would be the very cutesy anime-ish voice she uses on most tracks. However the singer is very popular among denpa fans because of her other denpa songs in the past. So it may get lumped in with denpa songs very easily because many denpa fans like her moe voice and will like this album even if it's denpa aspect isn't strong. (Personally I like some of the songs a lot even if they aren't so denpa too me.) This is pretty common as very few singers or composers do denpa songs 100% of the time. But when they do a lot of denpa, the non denpa stuff will get jumbled into the same grouping a lot.
>>
>>16423519

>what is about about nanahira?

She might be using dokudenpa to control the minds of her fans. These people seem to exhibit the behavior of people who have been brainwashed. They will incessantly advertise her work out of what appears to be a mindless state, because they are a) looking for more minds to convince how great it is and b) seeking affirmation from others in support. It's like a monster that is growing with the intent to swallow anyone who opposes it, truly a spectacular thing to witness. Nanahira is some powerful kind of being.

I'm not some huge fan of nanahira I just want you guys to shut up for once, you could replace "nanahira" with any other denpa/denpa related artist and I'd say the same thing. It's all part of a mind control agenda where they don't want denpa to be this weird kind of music for outsiders, they want to popularize it and make it palatable to the masses, hence the best thing going for their purpose is to keep plugging acts like Nanahira who get the most attention while they try to get people into thinking that moe pop and denpa go hand in hand, that it's all inclusive when really they just want to lead you into a way of uncritical conformity, the hivemind, and the next thing you know they're shoving the most popular type of worldwide memes down your throat in the denpa threads so that you'll feel so outnumbered and weakened their goal can be accomplished and you have no say against it.

I strongly suggest you read these articles as an introduction to denpa and the different kinds of denpa songs:
http://pastebin.com/kqSaCHUs
http://pastebin.com/23ARC5Bb

My opinion is that you should look for individual songs, rather than albums. Looking for "denpa albums" is misleading since few albums have *only* denpa songs, and we end up with a lot of confused people.

But if I had to say one, I'd say the legendary albums by Side Protea:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/9emh22p97djrkl5/
http://www.mediafire.com/file/o9cblv3bi803w1v/

The old denpa song list is also a good resource.

>>
>>16432269
Can we look to the releases themselves as generating a basis for this unsatisfactory behavior?
>>
>>16435279
ひろて~ surprised me with a couple of atypical arrangements on this one, a departure from the usual style of energized denpa I've been accustomed to hearing from him.
>>
>>16435544
I think there is a divide between what gets expected from some people and the music that usually gets uploaded which mostly causes them to be disappointed. To them there is a big difference between moe songs made from pop and the more mainstream-type, trendy sounds that get a lot of attention and what they consider to be real denpa. It seems really there are only a handful of active circles that do exclusively denpa material, and when I see most of these vocalists getting solo albums written for them the composers tend to work more in the pop vein, I guess for the purpose of getting them the most exposure...? I'm glad that the true-sounding denpa is actually quite rare and hard to come by, and not everyone will recognize it. I wish people would discuss more about what they like though, instead of flooding the place with hyperbolic thanks or just saying that something is the best. Also it can be difficult to articulate why you dislike something without offending anybody, and I guess sometimes it's not even worth unleashing that negatively into the environment.

Nope!
>>
>>16438431
>when I see most of these vocalists getting solo albums written for them the composers tend to work more in the pop vein
That's why we should be looking at composers/circles instead of only vocalists. For example I think ARM + Yamamoto Momiji is a godly combo, but Yamamoto Momiji's songs she does for other circles aren't nearly as great (she gets stuck doing a lot of EDM or generic stuff).
>>
>>16438655
So we have this dichotomy between pop and denpa which shares the common denominator of moe, but it's not just a thing with vocalists either it can be single composers alternating between these two schools of thought, like so >>16435676 hence some perturbations in a crowd of unlikely gatherers.

By the way, to whoever is maintaining RTL, you have duplicates of this album >>16448837
>>
>>16448602
Trudenpa has always been a thing in these threads. Basically the world denpa has always had a negative connotation in Japanese, to describe someone who is disconnected from reality in such a way that people don't consider them a rational human, like they're being brainwashed by some outside force or denpa waves (radio waves) . So pretty much in my opinion "trudenpa" based on the definition of denpa, a true denpa song should have some sort of unnerving feeling to it, you know, the feeling that you get something is quite off.

Listen to:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjP2Duf8Iwk
I would consider this "trudenpa", I mean, it's pretty unsettling and strange in a way isn't it? You can tell by the composition alone and the tone of Toromi's voice, even if you don't understand the lyrics.

>>16448896
He is being an factitious asshole. We've always considered that one IOSYS album a great shining example of denpa. Nanahira is more on the hyper moe pop side, but she has a few songs I would consider denpa.
I don't understand how you find the IOSYS song to be slow and passive, though. To me it's more crazy than the Nanahira song he posted, lots of weird enunciation from the vocalist, strange background noises, and several tempo shifts and such.
>>
>>16448896
I was kidding. In my opinion both songs are denpa, and I don't believe in any distinction. Either a song will emit denpa or it won't, and whichever frequency it is that you happen to pick up shouldn't be up for anyone in this thread to decide. If you feel denpa, then it is denpa song. The case for nudenpa stems from people being bothered by the large casual audience of certain artists, which admittedly bothers me also. I would prefer ななひら not to be so popular, but her large casual fanbase doesn't prevent her denpa from affecting me any differently. I suppose it's just natural for people like us to be very inclusive about our more obscure hobbies.
>>
>>16435412
What is v0?
>>
>>16449051
v0 is used to describe the bitrate setting used to create the mentioned mp3 files. V0 is about 240 kbps, for more information see http://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.php?title=LAME#Technical_information .
>>
>>16448942
>lots of weird enunciation from the vocalist, strange background noises, and several tempo shifts and such.
Oh, so it's sprechstimme, not trudenpa.
>>
>>16449124
So you intentionally uploaded at a lower bitrate. Is it not noticeably different from 320kbps?
>>
>>16448942
Yes, i know about the feeling of uneasiness while listening to denpa. It gives you a really weird vibe that you can't shake off but at the same time you can't stop listening to it.

>I don't understand how you find the IOSYS song to be slow and passive, though.
The other song felt faster to me but the IOSYS one is more catchy. I said that i didn't get it because to me both songs felt like denpa.

>>16448959
I see, so then it is a issue about the music losing that "weird" feeling and becoming more popular. Is that it?

On another subject. Has anyone done research about the psychological influence of denpa music on a person?
People have different perspectives about music and also experience it differently. However i think denpa is peculiar in the sense that is really catchy, nonsensical and somewhat annoying. It would be interesting to learn what exactly makes a person to keep listening to denpa and how it affects the mood of said person.

Personally i can't listen to denpa when i'm feeling down because the feeling of uneasiness and "fake" happiness makes me feel worse. But when i listen to it when i'm feeling great it makes my mood better.
I don't think another genre affects me in such a two sided way.

No, "v0" is the name of the variable-bitrate profile which preserves the most audible data. 320Kbps is the constant bitrate at which there is considered to be no audible difference from the original. v0, in theory at least, is essentially the variable version of 320Kbps, trimming only data which contains useless information needed to maintain the constant rate of 320Kbps. Although someone will surely try and argue, no one should be able to tell the difference when listening to 320Kbps CBR or v0-based VBR. 240Kbps is merely the average bitrate - of course it's lower than 320, otherwise it wouldn't be variable.

Just for additional information, both of these (as well as any other CBR or VBR encoding) are considered "lossy" because they do not preserve the exact data. Again, this should make absolutely no difference for listening, but it DOES have an effect on audible data when encoded down through future generations. Basically, it's the audio version of saving an image as a JPEG over and over again - the first one might be indistinguishable from the original, but the 20th will be utter incomprehensible garbage.

This is a little overenthusiastic. Repeated re-encoding does cause larger drops in quality, but when you're using fairly high-fidelity compression like 320k mp3, the difference will still be very subtle, and certainly not "utter incomprehensible garbage". Of course, there's no sense in doing such a thing, because you're throwing away fidelity with no gain in compression, so on a philosophical level it's a stupid thing to do.

I agree, their best was the one at C88, the others range from forgettable to a few nice tracks. I feel like they ran out of ideas, both lyrically and musically, it seems like they try to rehash the same ideas but spin them to a different twist, which just ends up being forgettable

Was just out tonight, terrible accident on the highway. Cars completely mangled. Ambulance had crossed the median en route to hospital just as I was passing by, and it happened to be that this song was playing in my headphones at the time.

I always think that I am going to die this way, after having survived a couple of serious vehicle and industrial accidents already. My emotions will totally warp inside of a situation like this whenever I see it, ambulance riding alongside me, at this point I am just forced to think about the sad and worrying news this person's loved ones will be getting soon. And, could this person be battling to stay alive? Are they even a good person? I want to be inside of there holding the hand of whoever it is.

Anyway, Toromi's singing served as a nice background to the contrast of flashing red lights in the night and my then pensive mood. With this, all my dudes of the denpa thread, I am realizing, yet again, the amazing quality of her voice.

>it was made before a lot of her other releases
I agree but can't pinpoint exactly why this is. Is it the synth?
>>
>>16484081
An interesting thing about this CD is several of the tracks were made by Baby Lemonade (ベイビー・レモネード), one of the founding members of Odenpa Studio, who went mostly inactive in 2013, about a year before this release. The other tracks were made by her usual composer (who is literally called "あいかわらずな" which means "the usual".) It's possible BB's songs were done before his hiatus and the other songs were made after to fill up the CD later. However it could also be the nursery rhyme / retro themes that you are feeling. I do know her song ぶんぶんぶん is also based on a children's song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUJZJ74Bzbs
>>
>>16484208

The synth plays into it, but I also think her voice is a bit less clean than usual when she's singing, like she sounds more out of tune in a really cute way. Also the songs in general are mixed in a way that makes them sound like they have lower audio quality I think... it feels that way to me at least. Like it has a low-fi vibe to it.

>>16484336

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Yeah that could be part of it, and I definitely agree that the nursery rhyme themes of the songs add to the feeling as well.
