Play defensively, all the time. When someone calls riichi, and you're 2-3 tiles away from tenpai, betaoiri immediately. Don't trust wind/dragon tiles and suji to discard. Also watch your replays.

It depends on your style really. Tonpusen is good if you can get a few cheap and fast hands, but hanchan is more forgiving of mistakes giving you time to recover.

I recommend playing nashi nashi (no red fives and no OEM tanyao) at first. It'll make you more conscious of tile efficientcy and less susceptible to bullshit 8 Dora open tanyao hands (the top two buttons)

After the riichi I had to choose what hand to go for. Should I chase the Shousuushii and possible Tsuuiisou (and it turns out back into a daichisei tenpai), or should I keep chasing the kokushi? I went back and looked at it, and I basically got surprised by the 3rd turn riichi. Since I already had 2 dora in my hand, if I could get a tsumo tanyao I take first. Then those 9 sou kept coming and I ended up where I was.

If I were to dump the 6 pin that early I'm completely abandoning any chance at 1st, and barring a complete collapse I'm not falling to 4th.

Mostly though I just ran out of safe discards. Until I got to that point the only dangerous tile I had dealt was the 3 man, and even that was half-suji.

Amazon has a lot of American sets, any one with 166 tiles should fit the bill and be entirely usable with American mahjong rules.

In general, the make of most Mahjong sets are going to be similar quality-wise unless you're planning on buying either extremely expensive or extremely cheap tiles, so your main concern is probably going to be the color and style of the tiles. I'd recommend consulting your mother if it's not a surprise gift so you can get what she would want.

Well it's in south 4, any other situation and I agree. Without a direct hit the baiman does nothing. If I can tsumo (or hit an ura dora) that's a sanbaiman at minimum, and the sex button will cause people to give me more draws. I also know that the dealer is in panic mode because of the score difference and is fairly likely to end up discarding around that range since he dumped the 2 sou so early. He eventually ended up with the same wait I did with a suji trap.

Some people are mentally deficient and can't think situationally. Even in tokujou I've seen people behind 20k points go for cheap 1000 point hands in S3, and without S4 being their dealer round. If you're in last you need to buy as much time to catch up as possible. You should NEVER go into oorasu in last place. Needless to say he probably didn't stay in tokujou for too long.

Basically, last place avoidance > getting first > getting second. Second is basically a consolation price.

If you are in 4th on South 4, defense is usually pointless. If you are dealer on South 4 and in 4th, there is almost never a reason to play defense.

It's still early in the round and relatively early in the game so in this case I think it's fine either way.
In this case I'd discard 9p before 7p though, because keeping the 7p for longer makes it more likely to pair it and still allows for tanyao if you'd want that (probably not in this case because 1m is the dora, but hey)
