Grammar can be get a little complicated at times, but the guy has a fairly limited vocabulary, so he repeats himself often enough that you can actually learn the words + kanji he uses to buff up your vocabulary. I've filled a couple notebooks with that stuff. It's much easier to spend an hour every day reading something you enjoy and taking notes than to it is to force yourself to do anki for even ten minutes, at least for me.

In terms of difficulty I'd say it goes Iwaihime < Higanbana << Higurashi = Rose Gun Days <<< Umineko

I think Iwaihime and Higanbana are the easiest simply because they have a shortstory format. You'll feel much more motivated reading through them because you'll be able to finish one story in 6-12 hours, even if your Japanese is really bad and you have to constantly look up grammar.
Umineko is the odd one out because of how much important information it throws in your face, and because of red truth, which is all about catching double meanings.

On that note, Iwaihime is actually pretty fun, and I wish more people would give it an honest chance. I understand why it gets dropped a lot. It has the same kind of timeloop structure Higurashi had, but much shorter individual episodes. At first that doesn't work too well because the characters aren't given enough time to be established, but it really comes into its own after the first three loops.

Sorry about the repost, I'm too tired to proofread, apparently.
>>
>>16353884
I'd definitely give Iwaihime a chance if it ever got translated.
>>
>>16353884
I will give it a try but horror isn't really my genre.

I get where you're coming from. I don't like horrormovies and horrorgames because the ways in which they scare you are for the most part cheap, disgusting, and not the least bit fun.
There's a different kind of horror as well though. You know, the kind that fills you with existencial dread, where your fear doesn't originate in your survival instinct, but from the fact that it calls your conception of the world you are inhabiting into question. Imo most people can learn to enjoy that kind of feeling.

Based on the two titles there already are, it should be an animal (maybe not?) whose cries can be used as background noise without sounding unnatural. We can also assume that it'll be a very specific species that lives in Japan.

To date, I don't think anything touched me deeply like Umineko did, in any medium, visual or otherwise.

I just cared so much about the characters, the story, just wanting to know what would happen next, wanting to know what end everyone would meet.
The magic ending had me bawling, full on snot-and-tears grade emotion, I was just so touched, seeing it, even without knowing exactly what it would mean or its implications. It was just so beautiful.

I understand the criticism towards Chiru, but at the same time I think it speaks a lot about the kind of reader who disliked the "genre shift", as they deprecatingly put it.
Even though more details were given out at each turn, even though we got more development for every single character, even though any part of the story you could name was expanded, just because it wasn't pure mystery and sterile new 'material' to dissect, it's regarded as shit by a certain slice of the readership.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to find the solution to a riddle, but if during Chiru the only thing you could think of "Oh, come on, when's the next REAL bit of story?", what the hell?
Are you just speedreading past any white text until you find some red?
Is the only thing you got out of the whole experience "There's a murderer and I got to know who it is, to hell with all the rest"?

I honestly don't get how you could even finish Umineko if your only driving force is a sterile desire to say "Yep, that's the culprit alright" and give zero fucks about anything else.
Umineko is long. Like, REALLY long.
It's beyond me how anyone could sit through the whole thing if they didn't enjoy anything about it that wasn't "who dunnit".
Maybe that's why people are so vocal about Chiru being shit.
They forced themselves through it just for a payoff that nobody was even caring, nor expected to give.

It's like driving 500 miles to a sushi place just so you can tell everyone that it's complete garbage because they don't sell burgers.

Have you read the manga version of Episode 8? It adds a bunch of emotional scenes.
>>
>>16408033

Yeah, it was great.
Of course, the only thing 90% of people cared about from the manga was the "This is all truth" page.
>>
>>16408040
I think Confession of the Golden Witch was good for both mystery fans and people just there for the story, since it explains the culprit while also giving an emotional narrative.

Like Gohda and Hideyoshi?
But I agree, I disliked the truth but when https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCkOCmciLcU began playing I couldn't help it feeling sad and crying a bit
The journey was the best part of Umineko, not the destination

I didnt pick the magic ending until my second read and I honestly still prefer the trick ending simply because of how well it pulled off the cold detective reasoning most people (including me) wanted to see, too bad its just left there as a bad ending with pretty much no closure at all. Ryukishi could have pleased both crowds without necesarily giving out the truth just by making it a proper ending.
>>
>>16408086
I think it was fitting.
You're investigating a closed case that's 20 years old, the only person who knew the truth is dead, and the one who knows half of it is technically dead.

The 'cold and reasoning' detective will just end up in a goose chase without a resolution forever, just like a reader who'd choose the trick ending would (until the manga came out).
It closes without resolution precisely because that's the point.

If Ange doesn't accept the 'magic' she's just going to live miserably forever, in search of an answer that doesn't exist.

Personally, I loved the message episode 7 and 8 mainly wanted to show you, about how the truth, or the "mistery" isnt everything.

It made me realize how many times I read a detective novel while focusing entirely on the mistery without realizing how it was such a great story, like the book was nothing but a puzzle, and not a story itself. Shit, there's a lot of detective novels that coudl be a better romance or action novels than many others, and yet all you do sometimes is focus on the mistery.
>>
>>16408086
The trick ending is for those without love, so no superfluous closure is necessary.
>>
>>16408101
This is actually one of the reasons why I think umineko is better enjoyed if you're already a fan of mistery in general.
>>
>>16408096
Except there is a truth to be found, with tohya's memories and eva's diary she could have eventually reached the truth, or at least a close aproximation to what happend on that day.

>no love meme

Go spout memes somewhere else
My heart starts racing when I start to see patterns in a mystery, when I start to make some sense out of how an impossible murder was committed. And then when you figure it out before the detective tells you the answer, when everyone is in confusion and you're smugly reading through anticipating all the culprits moves. And when the detective reveals the culprit is the one you thought, that feeling is just the best

If that isn't love then I don't know what is
>>
>>16408149
>or at least a close aproximation

But that's the point
If all you're striving for is truth, finding "an approximation" is the same as finding nothing at all
Truth is absolute, "good enough" is not truth, nor will it give any satisfation to anyone dead set on finding it

Truth, as in, the kind of truth Ange would be seeking in the trick ending, doesn't exist in the world of 1994.
That's why the Trick ending is a bad ending.

You can see it as "Ange doesn't lose her determination", but all it's going to bring her is a lifetime of desperation without any closure.
>>
>>16408178
This
Solving the Erika cheese puzzle with 1 cut by folding while everyone was calling Battler retarded made me erect
>>
>>16408173
In the magic ending Ange accepts "magic" and becomes an author in order to convey it's meaning to others, while in the trick ending she denies it and plans to keep to herself, unable to trust anyone anymore.

But Tohya is only able to find Ange again because of her fame as an author, so in the end Ange could only learn the truth because she wasn't singularly obsessed with it. It was only by moving on with her life that she was given some closure on the tragedy that caused her so much grief in the first place.
>>
>>16408178
>without love it cannot be seen
>meme
It's arguably the main theme of the whole story. But that's beside the point.

If your so hung up on the truth that you feel the need to point out an obvious candy trick to look smarter, then the game gives you an ending that caters to that desire by having Ange uncover Amakusa's assassination attempt.

And if you sympathize with others to the point that your willing to overlook a small lie that makes others happy, then the game gives you an ending in which Ange comes to terms with her past and is learns about her brother's "survival". This truth ultimately doesn't matter as far as the mystery goes. It doesn't answer any of the puzzles on the gameboard, it's just a side note there to give some resolution.

What would sleeping with Erika be like? Would it be purely lustful with no emotional involvement, or would she start to open up to her partner?

>>16408758
Well, she's at least old enough to marry already.
>>
>>16408779
It starts as pure lust femdom, but slowly becomes more gentle until she starts being the loving sub
The endgame is duct tape bondage
>>
>>16408774
I don't know if she'd ever fully trust them. It would definitely take some time, likely at least a year or so. And they'd have to be willing to put up with her thorough investigations into their private life, making sure not to give even the slightest impression that they might be cheating on her.

>>16408796
>The endgame is duct tape bondage
But who's in what role? Erika could easily be either an S or an M.
>>
>>16408796
I feel like at first she wouldn't trust you enough to tie her up, so you'd have to forcibly tie her up, have your way with her, all the while she'd be thinking that you've got full control over her.
Then you'd untie her and cuddle in to the night assuring her that she can fully trust you
>>
>>16408796
>>16408882
I agree that it would start as pure lust femdom, with Erika in full control as she seeks only to satisfy herself. But as she gradually starts opening up to you she'd pay more attention to her partner's needs, doing things like asking how it was for them after sessions or pleasuring them more.

As she continued to open up the sex would slowly devolve into pure vanilla; kissing, cuddling, and holding hands while doing it in the missionary position.

Finally, things would escalate once more into more hardcore territory, only this time the two of you would be going at it as equals, having fun teasing and pleasuring each other.

Yeah, there's the problem. That's kind of controlling psycho bs is not what forming trust is about. If Erika's too afraid to live with uncertainty she's unfit for any kind of meaningful relationship.

>>16408882
You'd probably have to go with the probability magic angle. Trick Erika into mistrusting you, then lead her into "miraculously discovering" the truth that you never cheated on her just when she's about to pronounce you guilty. Lead Erika into realizing that her paranoia is destroying her life and turn it into a lifechanging experience.

Fake miracles and emotional manipulation are the solution to all problems!
