The beer vending machine is awesome because it has a Drivers License reader for age verification and also an intercom so if you don't have a Japanese Drivers License you can press the intercom button to connect to some call center that will then use the camera on the intercom to ascertain that you are of legal age and allow you to buy beer.
>>
You know you've become weird when you start playing videos taken from a car driving on japanese highways as a kind of screensaver

It finally snowed here in Kyoto.

I was gonna go out and take pics of nanzenji, but it was way too fucking cold. I am from the Southern U.S. so I am not used to having an actual winter.

I might try early tomorrow, but I will probably be too damn lazy to go out in the cold again.
>>
>>16416455
Looking at your forecast today would have been the day for it, honestly.
Tomorrow looks like it is going to be windier, and wind makes it feel so much worse.

I don't usually have snow where I am from but I was just out shoveling snow around my apartment block. Yesterday out at Aizu-Wakamatsu and Aizu-Kawaguchiko was real fucking cold but gloves, scarf and a beanie go a long way to making it bearable.

And the next day got to a maximum temperature of 0 in Fukushima.

>>
>>16431198
They only really care about it, and the station staff only really warn people about it, when a train is coming.

Otherwise it is fairly free rein. At some stations it is nearly impossible to get past some of the stairs/escalators without walking over the yellow line (especially if people are waiting around them).

Where are you all original from? Because it seems like you guys are used to cold weather in general. Or have you guys just been in Japan for a long time now?
>>
>>16431234

Totally not used to warm weather, I am from the South. I never saw snow until I came to Japan.

It is just that 9 and 0 is a huge difference.
>>
>>16431234
I am from New Zealand, from a city that almost never gets snow and often has double digit temperatures in winter.

This is my first winter in Japan and I generally like it. You just have to put a couple layers on and wear a scarf and everything is fine.
>>
>>16431297
>>16431234

To add to this, the cold isn't so bad. I am fine once I get up and get dressed.

The worst part is Japanese houses have shit insulation and no central air/heat.

Everyday I wake up and it is as cold outside as it is inside. I hate having to get out of bed.
>>
>>16431385
Yeah, it's pretty much this.

Every morning I wake up and my futon is so fucking warm its hard to get out. But luckily my room is tiny and I set the timer on the aircon to come on half an hour or so before my alarm goes off so it takes the chill off a bit.
My place is nowhere near as bad as some I hear of though.

I just got back from my vacation/job scoping visit in Japan and would love to share some pictures if people are interested.

Unfortunately the pictures are just on my phone so they won't look too good.

Pic related; walked to Tokyo tower from sky tree, took all damn day and was freezing as hell. But damn seeing that glowing tower rising in the distance as I got closer was quite the sight.
>>
>>16471654
Ah, my apologies, 4chan flipped my picture and I'm not sure how to fix that. My bad.
>>
>>16471656
4chan didn't flip your picture, your picture was never portrait it just had an EXIF tag that told viewers to display the image rotated.
4chan just stripped all the EXIF data out.
>>
>>16471660
Is that so? I actually don't know how to fix that lol. I never use my phone to post so i'm at a loss.
>>
>>16471665
You can't fix it with your phone and phones don't usually have an option to actually take the photo in portrait mode without using EXIF to set the orientation.
You can use applications to strip and rotate files once they are on your computer. I use mogrify with the -auto-orient command to do it.
>>
>>16471684
Damn, I was really hoping I wouldn't have to do that much since I'm lazy as hell. Well maybe I'll get around to it.

Thanks man, I appreciate spoonfeeding me lol.
>>
>>16471686
If you want to use what I am using then these are the files.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/bb6dwqtv4dv45c9/autoorient.7z
The mogrify exe from imagemagick (renamed to zmogrify so it sits at the bottom of the directory) and a bat file named zstrip (for the same reason) that you just drag and drop image files onto and it will strip the orientation tag and rotate the image to match the orientation that was specified in the tag (the thumbnail fucks up though but I don't care).
>>
>>16471745

To be honest, it is year 29 of the heisei era and 4chan should do that by default.
>>
>>16471807
I'd rather they didn't.

I want my images to be the way it took them, not for other services to try to compensate for the stupidity of the orientation tag.

This sounds nice but I imagine it's very difficult to get such a position.

You're lucky. I would love to do Asian studies - Ive taken some college courses on the subject - but Im locked in the STEM field.
>>
>>16500321

>meme field

I guess, kinda.

As for tips, talk to professors as much as possible. If you are interested in a school, find a professor who matches your interests and contact them directly. They are really good advisors, and many are interested in actually helping students.

>>16500338

>but Im locked in the STEM field

Not really. You could come to Japan and join a grad school with that as your undergrad major.
>>
>>16500376
I heard from a friend of a friend who works at my university that trying to do a postgraduate course cross faculty (in this case Asian studies falls under arts, physics under science) is difficult at best. Is that really not the case? Because I'd be interested in doing that if its possible.
>>
>>16500385
>I heard from a friend of a friend who works at my university that trying to do a postgraduate course cross faculty (in this case Asian studies falls under arts, physics under science) is difficult at best. Is that really not the case?

It is the other way across. If you are missing a general STEM background, you really can't do a graduate course at that level.

Global Studies is so specialized that it is actually doable. Rare that people cross, but it is an option.

I am pretty sure I have heard of English STEM courses in Japan though, may want to look around a bit.

most of the people that apply are utterly insane and have a restriction on their travel because of their potential to be a threat and or danger to themselves or society.

some of those fuckers looked like they were wheeled out of an insane asylum covered in shit yelling BUGSBUGSBUGSBUGSBUGSBUGSBUGSBUGS!!! and joker laughing.

I was the only person that would help my little cousin that admittedly was a weeaboo from hell, was very pretty and tiny as fuck.

I drove her to the big interview thing in i think it was january 09 or so. I told her I would be her moral support, and shes going to do just fine.

we walk in there and that shit was animal house meets a furry convention meets monty pythons meets benny hill. shit was a zoo.

she was ready to have a heart attack, but i told her to harden the fuck up and walk tall and kick ass. she met with some THICCC black woman that wanted to eat her like ice cream, the nthis very FLAMBOYANT tennessee williams sounding motherfucker who said they would send her a packet with all the info, she was a shoo in for the program, and sell everything you own, you're going to japan!!

no packet no nothing. she got phone calls from the THICC woman every night wanting to trade sex for getting her into JET. after the first night she started recording it all, but never got in for being the nail that was sticking up.

Good point. I kinda wanted to show off the building and snowy trees on the left. Cropping the busy right side and water might be a good idea.

> It also seems like youve overexposed the trees in the background but I have trouble with that too and theres no real solution for it unless you take multiple photos and splice them together. I was trying to properly expose the snow, so I kinda forget about those others trees. It was so cold I could barely use my hands they were hurting so much. I bumped up exposure in post too which did not help.

Thanks for the tips. Will mess with them again later when I get home.

Drag down the highlights.

>>16549082
Play around in Lightroom, drag the bars around to see the differences it makes and then try to make the image look as close to what you remember.

I would say drop the exposure by -0.3 on them, second one needs the highlights pulled down, rotate the second and third a bit so they are more level.

As for composition they're pretty much fine.

Normal I guess. Helpful if anything. Always try their best to accomodate what they expect to be non-japanese speakers.

>Have they ever behaved racist towards you?

No. Most rascist I have come across is overhearing some guy asking his gf if all gaijin stink and getting berated by her for it.

>Can you speak Japanese fluently?

No. I can get by though, most daily conversations, school, work, drinking, etc. I am fine. When it comes to overly technical conversations I have issues.

My listening/reading is way better than my speaking/writing. For reference, I have only passed JLPT N2. I could probably pass N1 if I dedicated a few months to it, bit I don't have the time.

That picture is way too high resolution for such poor quality.

That is rather low, actually.
>>
>>16594225
High resolution relatively speaking.

I know that 1600x1200 isn't very high, my camera takes pictures at 6000x4000 after all, there's just rarely any point in keeping the photos at 6000x4000, and part of that is because I am often using lenses that aren't sharp enough.

I just recently read an article that Tokyo started considering putting overhead cables underground. I hope that does not happen, the batch of poles and cables have a nice charm.
>>
>>16594349
Might be kinda localized.

I don't really imagine them putting everything underground. And there are also places that don't have any above ground.

In many places there's just no room to put things under ground because there's like no curb, like the road you posted. Just dig up the road and put the cables under it? I am pretty sure that is a terrible idea because it makes access even more annoying than usual.
>>
>>16594365
That too, and since Japan is prone to earthquakes, it'd make the system more vulnerable. I will try to dig up the article but I believe it's an effort to make Tokyo "prettier" by western standards. Which is something I get more and more annoyed by. 2020 will be a hard year to survive.
>>
>>16594545
Yeah, would probably be focused on metro areas then.
>>
>>16594349

I had read of Kyoto doing it to more places, but this is the first I have heard of Tokyo.

Usually only touristy areas anyway.

And can you imagine how awesome the inside of those underground maintanence tunnels must look?
>>
>>16594794
>maintenance tunnels
Nigga, they probably just dig a trench about a metre deep, stuff the cables down there and then cover it up again.
>>
>>16594794
That reminds me, I really need to check if there are public visits to Tokyo's water drainage system. That thing is beyond human.

I've seen parts of it open here in Kyoto, full cramped but human sized tunnels.

Not sure if it is at keypoints or everywhere though.

Like a lot of towns in Hokkaido, the architecture isn't distinctly Japanese.

Can't say I really looked into it much. There was some fuss a few years back when Google released old maps of Tokyo that revealed old tanner areas.

All I got from that was that buraku areas in Tokyo were around Sanya, Asakusa and other places, but the exact areas were hard to determine.

Can you see Tokyo tower and the sky tree from Nakagin capsule towers?

Enjou kousai.
>>
>>16604031
Doubt.
Tokyo tower would be blocked by the shiodome cluster, and sky tree by the vastness of the city and surrounding buildings.
