That's the catch 22 they found themselves in. In Japan it's a new years tradition now. People may not watch Gaki at all during the year but they'll all sit down and celebrate the new year with the No Laughing batsu. And because it's tradition they can't really deviate so it's the same copy paste every single year. Boring bus ride, desks, Tanaka getting his ass kicked, Hosei getting slapped by Chouno, no "getting scared" segment and so on. The amount of celebrity cameos now is just way too much too.

I honestly wish they'd just keep the copy paste format of new years batsu to keep people happy but also have a mid-year batsu that reflects their old style. It doesn't have to be physical stuff like 24 hour tag but even some of the sillier stuff like Matsumoto pie hell and haunted hotel or the earlier unique no laughing batsus (Police, school, onsen) with unique setups are just so much more refreshing to see. It helps that those had very little cameos involved and it was mostly just them and a few other comedians stepping in to make them laugh. Sadly as the years go on it's getting more and more unlikely such a thing would ever happen.. it's painful watching the Gaki crew age.

I think they get told who'll be the guests are etc. but it's still up to the five to do the heavy lifting without a script; i.e. the food songs and making each other laugh, I doubt, are prepared beforehand. I also don't think most of the traps are known to them.

An overall good show this year, familiar yet still refreshing and funny. Hosei really took the brunt of the punishments and carried the show, whereas Endo has barely done anything this year. There seems to be quite a few skipped scenes as well, I hope they cover them all in the extras.

Over 50% of a live unscripted content is people talking over each other constantly.
On top of that, laughing, shouting, screaming, sound effects and others which make it harder to hear an already aurally complex language.

Still longer than it should be.
But it is a different complexity set.
