Yes it's part of the series, and it is also the prequel, but it's recommended that you read fate/stay night before watching fate/zero. Either way works though.

The reason being that fate/stay night came out years before fate/zero, so fate/zero would spoil some things for you.

Everything besides Zero and Stay/Night is basically just extra imo. I mean if any of the other stuff piques your interest, go for it, but it's not considered necessary reading/viewing.

I played Fate/Extra because I liked Caster.

There is no possible way you haven't heard "production order" as advice, so the fact that you're asking means you are just looking for an excuse to do something different. It won't be the end of the world if you accidentally watch a DEEN adaptation or if you don't completely understand every single nuance in Paradox Spiral.
