I'm sorry for this stupid question

Is the beginning of mahjong just a lot of rote memorization and grinding out games until things start to stick? I'm just doing so poorly and I'm not sure if I'm missing some obvious step or if it's just inexperience. I've won maybe 1 time in the last 20 rounds.
>>
>>16274481
Basically, yeah. As a beginner, it's kind of expected to do poorly against people who know the game better. Knowledge of all the Yaku gives a huge edge in versatility with your hand over someone who knows only a few.
>>
>>16274481
Until you know all the yaku, yeah for the most part.
If you haven't done so already, once you get the basics of the game (most game mechanics, most common yaku, understand furiten etc) it pays to try and read about tile efficiency, how to defend and so on.
>>
>>16274481
Yes that's normal, focus on the easier yaku for now and stop calling unless you know what yaku you are going for. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is calling anything they see and ending up with an invalid hand.
>>
>>16274481
What I did was playing the riichi mahjong flash game and try to do the hands they show below (or on this website http://www.japanesemahjong.net/mahjong-rules/yaku/). If your hand kind of looks like one described, try to complete it like it's written.
If your hand doesn't resemble any of the listed ones, you can *always* build your hand and declare Riichi when you miss 1 tile to win. It is a yaku by itself, but it's only allowed if you never opened your current hand.
Makes you learn all the yaku (or at least the 10 most common).

So yes, the beginning is a bit of memorization but it's not like the yaku are random combinations, they're pretty straightforward.
>>
>>16274709
Flash game is the best place to start because there's no time limit on moves and you can just scroll down to see all the yaku.
>>
>>16274855
Yeah I was responding to his post and saying what I personally did at the beginning.

Ippan players are awful and hyper aggressive. Once you know your yaku it's fine to jump in, especially if you just are willing to create a throw away account. Until you learn your yaku though, don't bother and focus on the flash game. Once you get some games together you can always post replays and we will tell you where you are fucking up.
>>
>>16275620
if someone is up, come to the saki thread on /a/
>>
>>16279071
That's good to know.

I did have a rather broad question though, and it might be something I just have to learn from playing the game. When I first started a couple days ago I kept taking every pon, chii, and kan opportunity I could. I realized that I can't do that as I often ended up unable to win with my hand. I've now done a complete 180 and essentially always keep my hand closed. While I have been winning more, I feel like I'm really limiting myself by being hesitant to open my hand. Is there any sort of trick to knowing when opening your hand is fine or good, or would it just be something that comes through experience?
>>
>>16279563
open your hand only if it's to go in tenpai or to get dora (if you already have a yaku ready). otherwise keep you hand closed
>>
>>16279577
That's actually a lot simpler than I thought. Thanks.
>>
>>16279563
You make calls that will make you progress towards the yaku(s) you want.
If you have a pair of dragons (or round/seat winds) you'll most certainly want to call pon to make the triplet and get the Yakuhai yaku.
If you have a lot of tiles from one suit, you'll want to call to complete your Hon'itsu or Chin'itsu more easily.
If you have lots of pairs and triplets, you can call pon to get a fast Toitoi.

Basically, if you have a clear idea of what yaku you want in your hand, you can call to accelerate its completion. But the yaku scores less points and some are not allowed in an open hand.
>>
>>16279741
>If you have lots of pairs and triplets, you can call pon to get a fast Toitoi.
Only if you have a lot of triples, otherwise focus on chitoitsu.
>>
>>16279741
Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Failing to have a yaku so many times made me tunnel vision closed hands and or ignoring terminals and honors if I did go open, which is pretty dumb in hindsight.

>>
>>16284158
Well what do you expect, it's a game with 4 players. True skill games are 1v1. Outstanding players will win only 30% of the time. That being said there is plenty of things you can do to influence the game, you will see more as you play it's not all luck. That's why I said it's hard to master, many beginners will write off things as luck when they should've read the discards, folded, or pushed a hand. There are times where someone wins to sheer luck, but if you play a few more games with them you see it won't last.
>>
>>16283963
I definitely think the mind games aspect of it along with being able to read rivers is harder than memorizing yaku.

How many manga are there about chinese mahjong?
How many anime are there about chinese mahjong?
How many TV drama are there about chinese mahjong?
How many threads on are there on /jp/ about chinese mahjong?

Outside of China riichi is more popular. Maybe there are more Chinese mahjong players than riichi players but that's just because there's so many chinks. If you exclude China then riichi is more popular.
>>
>>16285291
Not that guy and I don't have numbers to back it up right now, but I'm like 95% sure that outside of China, riichi is the vastly more popular variant.

I'm not sure what the breakdown is if you count global players, but if you disregard China (which you can safely do in this case) then riichi is easily the most popular.
>>
>>16285508
Why would you ignore any country in a global count?
>>
>>16285704
It's irrelevant for western and 4chan purposes. There's very few Chinese users on 4chan, and it's relatively unlikely that many people here are going to come into deep contact with Chinese mahjong.

Maybe globally speaking Chinese mahjong is very popular (though I still think it's less popular than riichi), for all intents and purposes it's pretty much irrelevant here, with a very broad definition of "here".

Most rulesets aren't nearly as codified as Riichi, which instantly makes the question of "most popular variant" a prickly one. There are variations within riichi but they are small.

The Chinese rulesets are pretty fluid. A lot of people play with variations and outside of MCR (Mahjong Competition Rules) none of them really have a regulatory body of rules.

There's also a *lot* of different Chinese mahjong rulesets. Some of them have 17 tile hands (Taiwan) and some of them have no honor or wind tiles (Chongqing). Some use a linear scoring method, but most use a "doubling" system where hand values are grouped. Some of them employ sortied discards and furiten, but most don't. The hands that are scored and the minimum requirements for a winning hand vary quite a bit as well. In short, they're different.

So if you were to ask "which variant of Mahjong is the most popular", the answer is probably riichi, but the question is disingenuous. The Chinese styles, if grouped together, constitute a significantly larger percentage of the mahjong player base. It's not even close.
>>
Also, don't listen to the people who say Riichi requires the most skill. Try some variants for yourself - you'd be surprised. Chongqing is especially good.

>>16285469
There is a whole genre of Chinese (live action) mahjong films. There's literally hundreds of them. A big one came out last year.

>>16285307
The "standard" Chinese style - MCR - isn't that popular. It's just the ruleset they use in tournaments within China because there are so many Chinese styles.
>>
>>16286117
>Try some variants for yourself - you'd be surprised. Chongqing is especially good.
Yeah, but who the fuck plays chongching? Of the main styles riichi is probably one of the best.
>>
Even if Chinese mahjong were objectively superior to Riichi, you wouldn't be allowed to discuss it here anyway, so it's pretty much a moot point.
>>
>>16286164
>>16286130
Shut the fuck up.
>>
>>16286210
Calm down Lee.
>>
>>16286130
Chongqing is a city of 30 million so I'd say probably a fair few. It's also really just a variant style of Sichuan, where about a hundred million people live.

I live in Toronto and I know of two groups besides my own that play Chongqing.

I like riichi. It's a good game with a clear purpose behind the structure of yaku. It's a gambling game, however, and it's different enough from most Chinese variants that mahjong fans owe it to themselves to explore what's out there.

Chongqing has:
- No honors or winds
- No minimum hand value and a completely different scoring system
- Voided suit requirement: A winning hand can only contain 2 (or less) suits
- "Until the bloody end": a winner does not end the deal; play continues until the wall dries up or all but one players have won. Winning gets you a payout and the privilege of sitting out of subsequent payouts.
- No dora

It's pretty different.
>>
>>16286345
What I meant it'll probably be hard for most people to play outside of China. It sounds interesting but it's pretty much impossible.
>>
>>16286365
I can sympathize with that. You would basically have to play in-person and teach everyone the rules. Not impossible, but not possible for everyone.
>>
>>16286383
If only there was some client like Tenhou that let you play all styles of mahjong.
>>
>>16286391
That solves one problem and creates another: Finding three people on the internet to play Chongqing with.
>>
>>16286391
Is tenhou not just for riichi? Or can you make your own room with completely different shit?
>>
>>16286391
A few months ago I announced I was working on one. I still am. I'll post the code when it's usable for netplay.
The way it works is that by default, the client lets you do any action to the tiles and table, and rulesets just constrain that. You could even take a tile from another person's hand without rules to stop you.

So I was playing tenhou and I swear I couldn't ever call the discards of one specific person. It wasn't furiten or riichi or anything like that. Say I had two 4 sou and two 6 sou and he discarded a 5 sou. It wouldn't let me call. Am I missing something or was that a glitch? It happened a number of times.

Is there a reason for that rule? Maybe because it would make things stupidly easy to go for fast tanyao hands?
>>
>>16291496
In the original chinese versions, "Chi" uses the kanji 吃 for "to eat", using something that's flowing down the river towards you to complete a shunzi 顺子, or a 'following-along set'. There's no real reason why the rule arose as far as I can tell, just like there's no reason why a Knight should be able to move like a teleporting archmage or a Queen should be the unholy offspring of a bishop and a moving tower in Chess besides conventional rules.

>>16293876
Just have to work on memorizing yaku and learning to read the pool. Once that's out of the way you sell your soul to the devil for some decent luck.
>>
>>16293876
First, search about "tile efficiency".
When you build your hand, the tiles in your hand have varying degrees of usefulness wether they are isolated, inside a meld, dora, terminal, etc. Sometimes it's obvious what you should discard (like non seat/round winds or really isolated terminals) but it can often be difficult when you have several uncomplete melds.
For exemple, if you have to choose between 56m and 12m, 56m is evidently more efficient because it is completed by 4m or 7m, whereas 12m is only completed by 3m.
But even though 12m and 13m need 1 tile to be completed, 13m is more efficient because in case you pick up 4m you can change 13m into 34m by dropping 1m and now have 1 more tile completing the meld.

Then, you'll absolutely want to read about "defense".
There are 4 players in the game and each one of them is trying to win, but only the first to complete his hand wins. Most of the time, it's not you that'll be winning but one of the 3 others. So when you see a guy that's close to winning (he's in riichi or made lots of calls for example), you should usually defend.
The basic defense strategy is "betaori" : you discard tiles that are 100% safe because of the furiten rule (like discarding a tile the player close to winning already discarded or discarding a tile the previous player just discarded). But if you do this you have to give up winning the current hand.
If you don't have 100% safe tiles, you can discard honors that were already discarded earlier in the round. They are not 100% safe but it's the next best discards usually.
An other easy way to defend is using "kabe" (wall). When you see all 7p (2 discarded and 2 in your hand, for exemple), nobody could be using 7p in a suit, so nobody can have 67p or 78p waiting to be completed. That means 8p and 9p can only be used in pairs or triplets. And if those were already discarded 1 or 2 times, it's even less likely.
And lastly, you never discard a dora into a riichi or obvious tenpai hand unless it is 100% safe to do so.

Wew, I wrote too much but if there is something you didn't get, ask away.
>>
When using the /jp/ link, which rooms do I wait in?
I can't read any of it!
>>
>>16294214

>>16293202

>>
>>16254658

>>
>>16294164
Isn't tile efficiency sort of common sense?
>>
>>16295586
Yes, if you understand math and probability. Most people don't. The tricky part can be knowing when to aim for something fast and when to take a slower hand for more points.
>>
>>16295586
You're overestimating the intelligence of the average person.
>>
>>16291496
The reason why chow can only come from the left is because it's easier to make a chow than a pung, as far as I understand. When you have a 3 and a 4, you can chow with a 2 or a 5. You have two chances. If you have a 3 and a 3, you can only pung with a 3. You have one chance. Therefore, to make people not chow as often, the ability to chow is restricted to one person, while you can pung from all three other people.
This analysis simply comes from how a game's design would evolve naturally as people realise the probabilities of certain things occurring.

I mean yeah, most of it should be obvious like we said.
Still, sometimes it's tricky because you also need to keep track of every pond + calls and even account for what opponents may be keeping in their hand. You may be willing to throw a bamboo ryanmen in favor of a circles ryanmen if you know someone has a bamboo chinitsu.

>>16295586

If Cantonese is a language and not a special subgroup of Yue, itself a prestige / regional dialect / subform of Chinese, then Chinese isn't a language but a language family under the Sino-Tibetian language family, which is debated. Either way it's irrelevant because Cantonese is a subclass of Yue and Yue is a subclass of Chinese, what level classes these guys are don't really matter.

European mahjong association plays riichi. Americans play hong kong or chink.
There's probably more players in Europe all things considered, so I'd reckon riichi is overall more widespread and popular than other types.

That /v/ thread last night was fun. We should try to recruit form other boards now and then

7447 tends to be so empty nowadays, I wouldn't mind more players, even if they were NoNames.

I came here sort of indirectly from the shmup general. A few shmup streamers also steam arcade mahjong.

To a stream or /shmupg/ ? On twitch there's icarusfw and t4n3 and I think another guy called ratikal, but I don't know his exact twitch url off the top of my head. And shmupg is over here >>163707570

As average as you can get.

I'm still at 1440~ after nearly 200 games
>>
>>16325047
If it's your first time ever playing mahjong that's not bad. If you already know your yaku and have spent a decent amount of time on the game elsewhere (like the Flash game) then that's not good.

>>16325054
Also this
>>
>>16325047
You're new. So, you shouldn't care about that stuff. Just play around with the game, and eventually, you'll learn. Paying attention to stats at this early stage will only frustrate and discourage you. Let that happen when you're more advanced.

Was in the /v/ thread yesterday. I know all the rules of mahjong but I'm not particularly good. Will the people who usually play in the 7447 lobby kick my ass? Also, is playing under NoName generally frowned upon, and what time of day can you usually find people playing in the 7447 lobby? Apologies for the probably stupid questions, I just usually get anxiety playing multiplayer games with real people.
>>
>>16328225
>Will the people who usually play in the 7447 lobby kick my ass?
Depends who's online. The majority no, but occasionally you get 4-6 dans who fuck shit up. Also just remember that a beginner can get lucky and beat a pro every so often.

>Also, is playing under NoName generally frowned upon
Yes. NoName is a huge faggot who usually always quits.

>and what time of day can you usually find people playing in the 7447 lobby?
It's pretty random. But generally the worst time to play is 21:00-2:00 PST, you won't find anyone online then.
>>
>>16328225
7447 has a pretty big range of players, lots of beginners play there, and since it's not ranked even people who aren't beginners tend to fuck around and not take things too seriously.

NoNames have some pretty annoying behavior attached to them, but as long as you don't disconnect in the middle of a match, it's fine.
>>
>>16328252

Until I get a few more games in 7447, I'm going to hold off on going back to ranked games. It's been a long time since I played seriously and I'm still making stupid mistakes.
>>
>>16333081
But it's hard to get someone to play in 7447 and you have to wait 20/30 mn to start a game.

I am just mad because my fucking internet literally dropped 5 times in a joukyuu game. It didn't even let me reconnect to the game in the end.

So I went to play in Ippan instead but between the absurd luck (6th turn honitsu oyaman), the feeding (ippatsu ron for haneman) and my internet problems I just closed the game. So, never going back in Ippan I guess.

That's why pic related is a character. Beginner's luck is a very real thing. I have encountered more bullshit games in ippan than I have in joukyuu and tokujou combined.
>>
>>16333303
I guess people are more daring when they don't have a lot of experience and defend less (or not at all) or go for big hands everytime. So that's why you get games filled with mangan and haneman.
>>
>>16333354
The bottom line is there is no reason to play defense in 7447. As such, big hands are much more likely.

I know there are a couple of people in Melbourne that know how to play. I'm not sure if they have enough to form a group and I'm not sure whether they'd even still care to play these days but I could try putting you in contact with them if you want.

In any case I'd like to try and get the Australian riichi community more organised so stick around.

Yeah, also don't worry about memorizing yakuman (other than daisangen and kokushi because they're really easy to remember) until you feel like you know what you're doing in the game.
Trying to group yaku by a common theme might also be helpful. They're all determined according to how tiles can be combined creatively so once you start remembering that, yaku will also stick even if you can't remember their names.
