That said, they'll probably still have set teams for story mode. My predictions for those are mostly the same as yours, except I'd put Reisen with Mokou and Sumireko with Shinmyoumaru. Nitori will be paired with a new character and there will be two more new characters besides, whom will be the final bosses and the cause of the incident.

I haven't the foggiest clue who they could pair Nitori with, though. Hina? Sanae? Black-haired kappa girl?

I don't know how to feel about this now. While I enjoy the fighting games, the most recent flying-based fighting games was sort of lacking. And yeah, a new shmup would be better than another fighting game.

Supposedly it's bouncing off of ULiL, so it's going to be fun to speculate for now.

First things, I would definitely expect Clownpiece.

I want a returning Sanae or Hatate for Nitori, but I doubt it. Plus I figure every character but 1 from ULiL will get paired off with each other, leaving the leftover with a newcomer and resulting in one likely odd pair.

Something like Kasen-Nitori is a dark horse but Nitori is a semi-frequent guest in WaHH and they have a connection with Manzairaku, assuming he's still one of Kasen's attacks. Maybe there'll be a few odd duck pairings like this rather than the obvious like Reimu and Marisa.

But as to who that leftover is who knows. If Mamizou gets left out maybe Nue comes in. If Shinmyoumaru gets left out, Seija comes in, etc.

If Reisen is left out, maybe you acknowledge Junko-Reisen in a roundabout way by doing Reisen-the aforementioned Clownpiece as an insanity-themed pair...or just bring in Junko for her. There are frankly a few possible ones for Reisen, most of whom would be viable in some manner.

Anyway, say every character gets paired off, you can do a solo existing newcomer for them, maybe one existing newcomer pair (Clownpiece/Junko or Hecatia?), and a pair of complete newcomers as bosses, unless they find a reason to pair a boss with an old character off the bat, in which case you can add one more existing character.

That leaves us with five, which they've never exceeded before. You never know, though, maybe the Sony money truck and reusing assets to such an extent, maybe meaning less work for them this go round than Soku to HM or even HM to ULiL, leaves them with more time and resources to add more.

Why wouldn't they be paired if they had different kinds of gameplay for a tag team fighting game? The shooters are a different style of game altogether, where they wouldn't be paired explicitly to give the player fairly significantly different options. Even in IN and SA, the partners in those games are meant to compliment different playstyles. A tag team fighter is about variety, however, often having utterly different rather than just complimentary partners in order to switch up play on the fly, or have assists.

That aside Reimu and Marisa outside of the games are always paired up so this statement

Also, since you mentioned it, why don't you read SSiB? It's really short and it's quite good. Keep in mind though that it's best if you read CiLR next, because it explains SSiB in detail, especially the ending which acquires a totally different feel. Sumireko currently ranks as 53 out of 160ish characters in the popularity poll. This puts her at the same level of popularity as characters like Chen and Eiren.
