What do you do with those jacket things telling you about the anime, /jp/? They're so tacky I'm tempted to throw them away, but I'm not sure if that's okay.

What are you reading?
>>
>but I'm not sure if that's okay
It's not okay.
>>
You can either go out of your way to throw them away, or do nothing at all and have a more complete collectors product.
They're called obis.

Sevens double update!

Alette-san’s expression… or rather, I didn’t let that glimmer in her eyes slip by. I thought.

Sorry, with Baldoir. Not me. The two in the Jewel were…

『Okay, with this, it will be fine when marriage and such comes up within Lorphys!』

『Just like this, let’s have Baldoir work hard to win over the alliance… especially Lorphys’ camp. Oh right, Lyle… you have to repay the lad on a later date.

… I’m the worst. I sold out my men.

>tfw you give your friends harems just to make them suffer.

>tfw the christmas cake finally got engaged

Lyle is a based bastard, guaranteed harem if you are his friend.
>>

I throw them away because when I bought my first book that didn't come with an obi, it looked really out of place on the shelf and my autism couldn't handle that. Also, these things only get in the way anyway.
>>
>>16205791
I keep my obi, also I never read my novels with the jacket on. I care more about the jacket being in better condition than the cover for some strange reason. Right Now I just finished date a live 5 and I am having choice paralysis because I bought too much in a short amount of time. I'm also having the issue of jumping around too much and not finishing any novels.

Those are called obis and they are important to collectors or anyone looking to see a return on the secondary market.

They put 'em on CDs too and the same rules apply.

The other thing is that Amazon JP charges static shipping fees when shipping internationally, instead of charging by weight.
It's usually 1500 yen per item, but if you order a whole bunch of stuff it can sometimes go down to about 1000 yen per item

Sets count as 1 item by the way, so you'd only pay 1500 shipping for 12 whole books in Chaika's case, for example.

Though I once tried ordering an Amazon-exclusive limited edition of a videogame and the shipping was 23,420 yen for that item alone, what the fuck.
>>
>>16225607
Wait this is for second hand stuff right? I tried looking for haiyore nyaruko on amazon and couldn't find a new set going for less than 7000 yen.
>>
>>16225637
Most sets are second hand, new ones are more expensive.
>>
>>16225637
Sometimes, sometimes not.
Second-hand is usually basically brand new anyway so there's no need to worry.
>>
>>16225650
Oh, that's cool. Never bought second hand before, is the condition generally good/
>>
>>16225651
Read the description, almost all the books I've gotten second hand looked brand new, but once in a while you will get one with yellowed pages, probably from someone reading outside in the sunlight.
>>
>>16225651
Japanese are super anal about these things so they take really good care of them.
Some of the second-hand books I bought even came with the obis intact, which would be surprising usually. Like buying an used videogame with an unused download code inside.

What is your opinion on the SAO progressive novels? Enjoyable?
>>
>>16225572
Are you trying to say you're rich enough to import 1 volume at a time?
>>
>>16228340
Imo all of SAO is bad because the foundations are shit. Reki Kawahara has never played an mmo. Accel World is much better.
>>
>>16228407
I agree that the original SAO novels are bad, far too rushed and patchy, but I am seeing mixed to fair reviews about the progressives, they have a lot more detail, development and story in them.
>>
>>16228470
I just don't understand the characters in SAO. It's like their personality and values change from scene to scene depending on o whatever the situation calls for.

For example, in one scene Kirito is very against using NPCs to tank bosses trying to be compassionate, but in another scene he shows a complete disregard for human life and lets people die to keep his duel swords skill a secret and does not show an once of remorse, then in another scene he is crushed by the death of a complete stranger. Reki has OFTEN forgotten that his story takes place in a game, she like you can't feel anything in the game, but kirito and asuna have sex, but because she can't get pregnant let's just give them an OP broken AI child that can cross into games that have no connection to SAO. Retarded!

On a positive note I found out how to buy Japanese Light novels on my kindle, now I don't have to depend on piracy. It's kind of dumb that I have to go out of my way and through hoops to give them my money.

I like bookmeter because it gives a lot of stats - for example, it records the page length of each book, so it says how many pages you read on average a day and shows how many books you read in a year and stuff. The "read book" list also shows coverart which is good for memory.

>Legend of Galactic Heroes in English

How's the translation? And are the novels a lot better than the anime?

I'm reading Tanaka's other series, Arslan Senki now. It's somewhat similar to LoGH in giving the reader an omniscient point of view but the characters are a lot more likeable and humourous. I feel like Tanaka already said everything he wanted to say about politics and society in LoGH which is why Arslan Senki is dedicated to more strategy and action.
>>
>>16314279
Not him. I haven't read all the books, but I have watched the show and read a bit of the books (so please don't take this as an authoritan/very well informed view). The main distinction I would make between them is that the books have a lot more clarity. More attention is given to minor details, as you would expect from a book, so it's easier to fully grasp a situation that would have felt a little confusing in the anime. Furthermore, the pacing in the book is something I prefer: in the anime, there's jump cuts to create more dramatic feel / TV show pacing whereas in the books it's often a straight shot. The best example of this is that the novels open UP with a history of humanity leading up to the events of the novel, whereas the anime leaves that until like... the later episode 70s-80s?

I don't know if I'd say the novels are a "lot" better, but I prefer the novels as more of an "enriching", intelligent world to learn about (whereas the TV show feels more like entertainment a lot of the time).
>>
>>16314279
> How's the translation? And are the novels a lot better than the anime?
The translation is not bad. It's pretty dry but I don't mind. It's not stellar but it does its basic job. The books as a story are fine. Engaging, interesting, fun, though some things are quite weird and not up my alley. For instance, when two protagonists appear for the first time the books introduces their backgrounds, strong characteristics and basic looks. And id does the same when the same characters appear in the next chapter. And the next and the next. Every new chapter first time Reinhard appears you are reminded that he has a sister, his childhood with Siegfried, what drives his and how his face is that of an angel and his hair are smooth as silk. Same with Yang Wen-li. It's weird and kind of annoying, especially when you are reading the last chapters of the book and this reintroductions just keep happening.

The other thing I have a bit of a problem is glorifying of Reinhard and Yang. They are unparalleled geniuses no one can fathom. But honestly their strategies featured in the books aren't exactly stellar, ground-breaking or unprecedented. It's also sad that maybe with exception of Oberstein everybody acts pretty dumb. I mean, I like the books, it's fun enough story, but you have to accept the game it plays.

No problem. I should add that the percentages on that wiki can be really strange -- anything over 70% should be safe, but that doesn't mean anything below 70% isn't worth reading. Some of the books that are given 50-60% because GL "isn't the main focus" are still super gay.

>>
>>16314733
>>16314365
The biggest problem I had with the anime were the battles, which basically came down to whether Yang got to command the fleet because you knew he would win every time. And yeah the strategies were pretty lame.

>when two protagonists appear for the first time the books introduces their backgrounds, strong characteristics and basic looks... And the next and the next

It's a good thing Tanaka stops doing this in Arslan Senki. The strategies used by the protagonists are also much more believable and interesting, probably because he has thousands of years of medieval battles to draw from.

I don't care what anyone says, I will always love generic isekai settings and self-insert power fantasies.

My only complaint is that I wish there were more of it.
>>
>>16320994
Totally agree.
The only thing I don't like about them is the legendary rule that the MC must not work for his power. I really don't like that much. I really need at least some justification. For example, the MC of Mushoku Tensei got a lot of his power (if I recall correctly) based on the fact he was smart as a baby and quickly knew to train his magic stat up whereas a normal baby wouldn't have (haven't finished this past vol1 so it may jump the shark later). Rand al'Thor in the Wheel of Time has his cheat power as the Dragon Reborn, but at least he's the DRAGON REBORN, with all the weight that carries and the story behind it. Basically, what I'm saying is, just a little justification I can agree to.

I like seeing what people in general think are the best works, even if I don't agree with them. Don't be so anal.
Also, I don't like reading reviews beforehand. I prefer going in blind.
>>
>>16350554
Pick up a copy of このライトノベルがすごい then. Spoilers: the things "people in general" think are the best works are the same multi-million sellers like SAO and Oregairu that you already knew about anyway
>>
>>16205791
>What are you reading?
Just got this. Let's see how it turns out.
>>
>>16320994
You should look to Chinese web novels instead of just Japanese ones. Some of those are massive more than a 100 chapter long power fantasies that keep getting more ridiculous with each chapter.

Although maybe the isekai element isn't exactly there.

Which of these LNs have you read /jp/?

So shit like SAO, Konosuba, and Danmachi? The masses tend to have shit taste.

bump

can anyone tell me if pic related (uchi no musume) turns out like usagi drop or not? because honestly that's not exactly what i was looking for when i started reading it.
i'd prefer a doting father-daughter relationship though. so how far does this go?
>>
I don't buy LNs because LNs are trash, but obi/sashes come with manga I import. For those, I check out whatever it is that they're advertising, then I toss 'em.

They're a pain to keep on when lining the volumes on a shelf, and they rarely do anything neat with them.
>>
Just discovered this thread recently, grabbed this off Amazon for less than $30 shipped after seeing it had some popularity here. Quality is basically like-new and the shipping was dirt cheap, Amazon Marketplace sets are probably the best place to buy LNs if you can find what you want fulfilled by Amazon

Does anyone know where to get Kouhei Kadono's The Case of the Dragon Slayer?
>>
>>16228340
I enjoy them, they are a lot more detailed than the original books, both the game world and the character development is a lot more fleshed out. I'm enjoying Kirito's and Asuna's relationship development, despite knowing big something is going to happen to split them up around floor 10-15.

I'm not enjoying the laughing coffin story arc, I think it distracts from the main story too much, wish the author would forget about them. I prefer the story focus on unique themes of each floor, about beating the game and the relationships between characters and how they all have their own way of coping and beating the game.

I read all of Infinite Dendrogram on Narou and bought the first two volumes a week ago.

I hate Narou so I felt extremely dirty that I did that.

>I hate Narou so I felt extremely dirty that I did that.

why?
>>
>>16393091
Because FUCK writers that don't have publishers. Newbies should only get exposure through the grace of a publish, anything based on public opinion and personal merit is plain wrong.

uh...okay?
>>
>>16393091
I just don't like the influence on the LN front that is brought on by this site.

Books like 君の膵臓をたべたい are okay.
>>
>>16393091
They hate the 異世界, savior of LNs, Anime and Manga.

Pagans all of them I say.
>>
>>16393275
So Isekai that was graced by a publisher is fine?
>>
>>16393064
Have you tried 死神を食べた少女?
>>
>>16393483
No, I haven't read anything that isn't getting promoted because it'll be owacon soon (if not already).
>>
>>16299054
what one?

Don't mind him, he has autism
>>
>>16395629
He sort of has a point, but I don't think authoritative selection is as important in the LN industry. That being said, I have never read any web novel or book that started as a web novel that I enjoyed.
>>
>>16401628
Do you mean I had a point in that "fuck writers that don't have publishers"? Because that was a joke. I thought "anything based on ... personal merit is plain wrong" would seal the sarcasm deal.
>>
what ln's do you guys recommend that a beginner jap learner can read?
>>
>>16403746
Beginners can't read anything, that's why they're studying. What LNs can you study from? All of them. They're all Japanese.
>>
>>16403746
Eromanga Sensei was the easiest LN I've read so far. Daily life setting, without much specialized vocab (and what's there is mostly anime subculture related, so you should know it if you post here) and an unusually high amount of furigana.
>>
>>16403746
You should probably look at like, children's books like the stuff Aoi Tori Bunko publishes (in b4 "but all LNs are children's books")

>>16405747
It's true Eromanga-Sensei has an extremely simple vocabulary but if they're a beginning learner chances are they don't have nearly the command of grammar they're going to need to understand it anyway. Especially colloquial speech, which always throws textbook learners for a loop, and there's a ton since the books are mostly casual dialogue

> But does true-route Yukari know this?
As far as I can remember there wasn't said anything about how it come from pre-last to last one, so let assume that was Yukari who did it that time. I'm sure there was something to interpret this way and it would settle pretty much everything about it.
>>
>>16408904
This isn't a satisfying interpretation at all. It's basically just "Yukari is all-powerful and magically fixes everything". I want a happy ending that's also thematically consistent.
>>
>>16205791

Just finished this one. One of my favorites so far from Nisio, very different from the manga adaptation. Bonus points for a few very cool visual tricks he plays with kanji on the page.
>>
>>16409058
It's not "Yukari is". It's "there is possibility Yukari will turn out to be". This is what they call open ending.
Given that it's a short story, I'm okay with this ending. This is something Akemi-san never got.
>>
>>16409285
I'm not okay with this open ending at all, it's left me with this empty feeling inside. Not that I'm insulting the LN, it's amazing, but I'd much prefer a proper conclusion.

I guess I need to read something else and move on. What should I read now?
>>
Where do you guys purchase light novels ?
>>
>>16409717
Typically from Amazon jp or Mandarake. I prefer Amazon because of their cheap and fast shipping.

I've never used honto but I hear they're also a good shop.
>>
>>16409703
Consider 電波的な彼女.
It's quite short, just like Qualia is. And quite interesting.
>>
>>16215651
not even 6 chapters are translated, you can do better niglet

No one is reading "release that witch"?
