Ive been playing this game on and off for a couple of months just looking around trying to make sense of the imagery, I've got a few ideas that support what I think but Im just interested in what other people think about it.

Also whats up with the Aztec imagery? Why is it so prevalent
>>
It's a game about a girl who dreams weird dreams a lot and apparently keeps a diary of her weird explorations.

"Aztec" imagery is cool. Every game should have a theme or gimmick.
>>
>>16179703
>It's a game about a girl who dreams weird dreams a lot and apparently keeps a diary of her weird explorations.

This. You could give it all kinds of bullshit interpretations and meanings, but in the end it's a game about girl and her hobby, lucid dreaming.
>>
>>16179750
Are you some sort of sjw fuck? You kind of people always try to bring in modern ideas into old shit, which is fucking retarded. She can go into male restrooms because it is all about freedom to explore.

Yeah they are, you new-age /x/ fuck.

>I mean theres more than a little sexual imagery
Name something that's not "Benis shape XDD" (Includes "uterus shaped")

> I haven't come across anything that isnt just made up out of thin air
And you won't.

>there are npcs and objects like the male and female toilets where she can interact with which make it kind of allude to something
Most likely having to wake up and take a piss.

>Id say the story is something like being scared of her/his sexuality
Lmao @ u
>>
As an art history major, I get unreasonably autistic when people call the imagery Aztec. It's Inca/Paracas, damn it!

But yeah, I think it's a cool touch that distinguishes it even today from other surreal exploration games.

Whatever happened to Kikiyama?
>>
>>16179793
>sexual imagery
>Hands, feet, eyes, bloody painting
>>
>>16179803

Well, being a society that doesn't have any texts saved, it's hard to know much about what their textiles/imagery meant. But they seem to be images of feline or serpent deities that can fly, or alternatively shamans. That would actually make it kind of interesting, as their imagery might be of shamans on dream visions essentially. Kind of like Madotsuki, but with more drugs. So that would be kind of a clever comment.

But maybe it's not more complicated than because Kikiyama liked it. Heh.
>>
>>16179703
I want to add to my post here, that the only real thing that can be extrapolated is that she is a hikkikomori.
>>
>>16179804
He's getting royalties from the manga and LN I guess. Just likes to keep quiet and to himself. Otherwise it would be endless "What is the meaning behind the game?" for him I assume. It doesn't matter what the creator thinks of the meaning, the meaning everyone makes for themself is what is important.
>>
>>16187673
I disagree. Everyone can have their own interpretation, but the creator's interpretation is more canon.
>>
>>16179703
>>16179732
Why did she kill herself?
>>
>>16189716
Yume Nikki is a game about "the death of the author". This is all just my speculation but I don't think that Kikiyama has a "true" interpretation of his own game, because the whole point was to make you think.
>>
>>16196242
That'd be some really obscure shit to make a game about killing yourself, then do it.
>>

>>16196242
This, more or less.

Not everything needs to have a set-in-stone meaning.
Some things are about making YOU think rather than just picking up what the author has predetermined for you.
>>
What can there possibly be more to discuss over this game?
>>
>>16193277

Try being a hikki. You'll understand after a while.
>>
>>16196343
I don't think we ever settled which Yumi Nikki we would fuck.
>>
>>16179689
It's about a hikkikomori who likes to dream and keeps a diary of her dreams.

Anything else is up to your interpretation.
SPOILERS:
In the "ending" she commits suicide but it should be noted that the game is technically unfinished, as the released version is not past 1.0
>>
>>16196755
Version 1.0 never ever.
>>
It's also important to point out that "genuine hikikomori" tend to be extremely passive in their entire mode of existence. Staying indoors and avoiding almost all social contact is more of a symptom than a definition for the condition. Even NEETs who spend most of their time in front of their computer tend to engage with the world in some sort of active or constructive way, even if just picking and choosing what anime to watch. Being a hikki means relinquishing some basic human agency, spending all your waking hours in a half-conscious haze. It is a condition approaching clinical autism, or even a vegetative state.
>>
I think it is more of a character study of a neet than anything else. What you may learn in the nexus is really secondary. I think the really unsettling thing is how young she was
>>
>>16198051
>I think the really unsettling thing is how young she was
Prove her age. Now.
>>
>>16198189
Shut up shes not a billion year old loli
She was obviously made to look young and probably is since we will never know how young she is bc of dead author
>>
Is the reason uboa is happy because madotsuki subconsiously liked being raped at the most basic level of sensations?
>>
>>16198214
If she's so young, how come she lives alone? I haven't played in years but are there even any young like places she visits, like a school? I don't remember a single thing in the game that suggests she's not an adult.
>>
>>16198309
It was only her room and a balcony there wasnt even a bathroom so how can you say she lives alone. It could be that she separates herself from her family
>>
>>16198309
I don't think that anon was implying she was high school age or lower, but she still could be in her 20s, which is pretty depressing.
>>
>>16198326
And now we are left to wonder if kikiyama made her seem young in appearence to foreshadow that people like her are getting younger and younger. Its especially strange because i know quite a few people who are hikki who mostly sleep all day. As a matter of fact ive started doing it too
>>
>>16197417

She's a hikki (and I guess a NEET)

you know she's a hikki because she literally refuses to go outside (shakes her head and says "no"/"it's useless" ("dame"/"muri") if you try).

You COULD go nuts and assume there's some apocalyptic shit going on or she's locked in her room, but meh.

>What is Yume Nikki actually about?
Short Answer: It's about a hikikomori who has begun her descent into insanity and must unlock the deep-seeded psychological issues that have resulted in her life as a shut-in before she loses her mind altogether.

>Also whats up with the Aztec imagery? Why is it so prevalent
Not so easy to answer, although my guess is that these are sigils related to past lives or hallmarks of access to the collective unconscious. Incas/Aztecs/Mayans were one of the most sophisticated cultures on the planet before being wiped out by the invading Spanish. They are often depicted as being even more advanced in many ways than contemporary cultures, but with a greater emphasis on religion/spirituality/mysticism. I think Kikiyama was using this as symbolism for a repository of all-encompassing human understanding but this is just speculative.
>>
>>16198321
This is now a good point, there's not a bathroom, a kitchen or anything connecting to her room, this proves that she probably doesn't live alone.

You wanna go on a Yume Nikki adventure? There's a way you can do it.

If you live in the states you can go to the pharmacy or order melatonin tablets online over-the-counter. It's the hormone that signals you should sleep.

Whenever I take it I get improved sleep quality. It's more efficient and it feels nicer when I wake up.

The bonus effect: 8/10 of my sleep sessions on melatonin result in REALLY vivid dreams I can remember. Just last night I had a dream about walking through the night with my friends and checking stuff out at retail stores. Bizarre as fuck but very enjoyable experiences.

And a few days ago I was in a dream series where I stabbed someone to death so they wouldn't harm my family. Shit if I cared enough I could fill an entire dream journal with this stuff.

how hard would it be to learn to make a game like it?
>>
>>16225895
It's just an RPGmaker game. You literally drag and drop stuff. The ideas and images are the hard part.
>>
>>16204040
I suppose it would depend on the cause of the depression. For instance, if you were anything like Madotsuki the game would at best help you cope with depression and at worst cause you to become even more reclusive. I can't think of any game this doesn't apply to, really. In order to help with that kind of depression a game would have to provoke a major positive change in behavior or worldview. I can't think of many games that do that.

>>
>>16255634
no, he moved on.
>>
The game is all kinds of absorbing, but I did wish the zones weren't quite so big and some of the paths weren't so obtusely hidden.

In many ways it's the opposite of a dream, returning to the same static, predictable layout each time and you have very little effect on it. A real dream game would be procedurally generated and changing to your every input.

What does emerge from the experience is that Madotsuki is withdrawn, alone, lost in life and resentful towards the world. All the "worlds" are bleak and lifeless, except for one that is bright and noisy, but in an abrasive, wearying way; this could be what social events feel like to her. The toriningen might be how she views adults. She seems to think that other girls refuse to acknowledge her and their real nature is monstrous. There are hints of violence, some of it sexual.

But drawing specific theories amounts to reading tea leaves. Doubtless the designer drew on his own sentiments to make it, but I'm sure he also leafed through books and magazines and picked out the first image that struck him.
>>
Major events and characters appearing based on chance kind of soils the experience if you don't get them

I found out afterwards that I missed out on a number defining moments because I apparently didn't get some random number in some code to happen as I did something

I understand it can make for unique playthroughs of the game but it can also mean you don't experience nearly as much or end up just repeatedly trying for events after reading about them like you're grinding for some gear in an RPG with a guide in the background.
>>
>>16266930
It can lead to moments of horror when you thought you knew an area when something shocking appears during a replay, but the game is too bare for that kind of value.
>>
>>16266891
>There are hints of violence, some of it sexual.
>some of it sexual.
Like what?
>>
>>16266930
Your problem is playing the game like a completionist. It doesn't matter if you ever get the events or not.
>>
>>16266952
Nothing to do with being a completionist. Some of the biggest events of the game, some of the most defining, are completely based on chance.

There were parts of the game where little happened that did not impact me much, only to find after out that something major would have happened but only if I got the random chance to work out. If they had happened I would have been more interested and invested.

Again I can understand why they're random but being random at all means a player might get less out of the experience than another who happened to have these events happen as they played.
>>
>>16266984
>Some of the biggest events of the game, some of the most defining
You mean memes?

Defining moments were being put into the maze, using the stoplight on that girl with the multiarms, being chased by that one fast bird thing, ending up on mars and stuff like that. Scream mask guy and giant cloud thing are hardly "defining" moments.

I still think you feel like you have to meet some quota of experiences and feel bad that you weren't able to get them yourself. Don't even worry about stuff like that.

>a player might get less out of the experience than another who happened to have these events happen as they played.
