Our guides apparently do not have basic information such as where buy? and can I fuck it? (The answer is YES!)

Old thread's been decaying on page 10 for over 48 hours and not one of you made a new thread so now the Australian has to do it.

out of ninestyle, alice's collection, and dollmore, which is the best value on mdd clothes for the money? dollmore clothes honestly look like they are the worst of the three and ninestyle seems very expensive for similar clothes on alice. alice is looking pretty good too with the free shipping deal, just cant get a good idea of how quality the clothes are

Dollmore's clothes are fine for the price but all their black stuff (socks esp) will stain like crazy, definitely wash beforehand

I've actually been waiting for my first order from Alice Collection to ship all day, the free shipping deal technically says EMS/DHL so here's my first experience with DHL I guess. Ordered a few outfits, pair of shoes, and a pair of glasses, I'll report back if it ever gets here

Nine9style is the only place I've bought from so far, and while expensive, the quality was very nice. I bought SD13 clothes, though, so I can't vouch for mdd clothes specifically.

I have a few pieces of each, so here's my experience:
Nine9style is the superior one out of the three. Their stuff suits MDDs well and everything is quite durable. Shipping was a tad slower.
Alice's collection has a great staff and they will do whatever you need, from undervaluing to special packing instructions etc. However, some of their clothing articles are the same as those cheapo ones clogging up ebay (and those same sets are usually cheaper on ebay as well). I have one Black checkered dress which looks a bit off on my MDD but really nice on MSD.
I don't like Dollmore all that much. Their overall style looks cheap in comparison while still asking a moderate price. A lot of their clothes look awkward on MDD.

Hope you get it soon and that you'll share pictures!
I went a bit overboard with stuff lately. Also waiting on two DDH-10 and one DDH-09
Several clothing/wig orders and worst of all... the DDS boy body and Smart Doll Eiji.
I usually keep myself in check but there were several opportunities I couldn't pass up.

Regarding the custom heads. I'm also in EU and after doing some math I've come to the conclusion that it just isn't worth it. it's a three-way shipping process plus waiting times plus the expensive face-up and probably customs on top, so unless you have a very specific character you want to recreate, it usually ends up being cheaper to just get a finished head from Y!J.
I wish I had better access to Mr. Super Clear. Then I'd be doing face-ups more often and could offer you my services at accessible slav discount prices.

How does M cloths fit on S bust DD in general? Started looking for outfits and almost everything I find is M or M/L but Mirai comes with an S bust.

And here's that himezakura wig I'm so bent up about. Frizzed to hell and back right out of the box, and I was mistaken -- it's not that the cap is small, it's just exactly Miku-head-sized with no elastic. I tried putting it on my DD Ranka and there was no elastic to grip on so it fell right the fuck off. The black thread on the outside of the headcap shows through the bangs no matter how to part the hair, and the bangs are pretty thin at that. The little antennae on the side bug me a lot. I might be nitpicking I guess I just expected better

disregard WIP cardigan, I bought a better zipper today to redo that bit

Yes. They're pretty good for acrylic eyes, good resin eyes are nicer though. Note that they have a kind of a sparkly effect, you can kinda see it in your photo but pic related is of one of my girls with WDS eyes and you can see it better here.
>>
>>16183369
That's what I figured. The eyes I was originally going to buy were resin, from Lizanna, but they're closed until 2017.

I like the glittery effect! Judging from the pictures I've seen, it seems like they capture light pretty well, too. Also, cute girl.
>>
>>16184290
I have such a hard on for Lizanna eyes.
>>
>>16182087
Where can I find their site? I've been wanting to find a set of eyes for my girl, and these are what I've been looking for in an eye style. And as well, is it best to just go ahead and get a new head to set the eyes in and just run a new face up altogether and have the eyes set off the rip, or would the original work best? My girl is a DDS.
>>
>>16184848
They have a taobao as their main site but you might need a proxy for that. Alternatively Kaleidoll is a reseller which is where I got mine.
>>
So here is a thought. There are three types of heads.
Default face up
Commissioned/do it yourself face up
And
A head that you buy with a faceup

That last one is interesting to me. They tend to be unique because a artist does not want to do the same thing over and over.
But the body the head goes on, wig, outfit, and even eyes are done by the person who buys the head.

So does anyone who bought one of these heads ever think about how different her life would be if someone else bought the head.
Just some thoughts I had.

It looks better than I would've expected. I hope you hear back from them and get the tie replaced. If you need to give them incentive, mention that you'd love to write a review but feel like it would be a shame if you had to write the missing tie as a negative point.

Get a silicone cap or those tiny Velcro strips for keeping wigs in place. Also, there are various gels that can make styling easier.
Curly hair is hell. Especially long piggy-tails like that. I've got a similar one, a bit shorter and thicker and it seems like all I do with it is comb it and try keeping the small strands in place. Washing with conditioner and use steam and curling iron will improve, just look up a few tutorials on YT.
The cardigan looks really good so far! Do you sell your stuff somewhere? I have a severe lack of cardigans in my collection.

DD have slightly different feet proportions to regular SD/resin dolls. always look at inner measures. DD feet are about 6,5 cm long, but due to how wide they are, you should usually go for 7-8 cm shoes.

A lot of girl clothes/tops/shirts have bust darts which can look awkward on very small breasts. But in most cases you shouldn't have any problems with M sized clothes for S bust girls. Unless a set was specifically made for L size, it should suit Mirai just fine. Mine wears M Volks outfits for the most part. I don't think I even have anything S/SS sized at all.
Just avoid SD stuff, it's shorter in the arms and too wide in the torso.

That's the best part about this whole hobby. You can basically make infinitely many versions of one and the same head. Even changing such a simple thing as eyes can change the character significantly.

I'm sure there are alternative universes where a different person won a specific head auction and it turned into i.e. a tomboy instead of a schoolgirls with cat-ears.

I appreciate the wig advice but I'm just so unwowed by this one (because I expected too much) that I'm just gonna sell it, there's no incentive to fix. The pastel pink wig she's wearing with the AC outfit was original bought as a temp wig for a different doll, but Miku's really grown into it and I think that's gonna stay her go-to wig. I like that it sits a lot more shoulder length and loosey goosey around the face than your standard bob with tails, you know?

>I dont really get why everyone seems to have their panties in a twist over this?
What an awful way of seeing opinions that aren't your own.

Anyway, I think most people critical of that sculpt agree that his nose would look better if it was sharper. I also think his brow might benefit from being more pronounced, but I couldn't say for sure. It's hard to tell how his brow looks with just those pictures.
>>
>>16190980
I'm not a fan of boy dolls so take my opinion with a grain of salt but I'm not impressed by anything I've seen of him.

His hair and clothing look off to me.

That said, it's always nice to see older properties get some love. If this is a favorite character or husbando, I can definitely understand the excitement.
>>
>>16191406
Well it's not an opinion but more of a fact?

A part of me that's upset is that people are criticizing Danny without having the credibility to give criticism.

The ones whining are similar to the following:

>Has never made anything themselves before
"Wehhh fix this fix this Danny this sucks"

Like holy shit. Don't give crit when you don't have any fucking expertise on the subject.

Not to sound like a shill, or a whiteknight but it drives me crazy when people are trying to drag Danny down without sculpting, producing and creating anything themselves.
>>
>>16192267
>Don't give crit when you don't have any fucking expertise on the subject.
The world would be a sad place if only people with credentials in a specific field would be allowed to criticize something.

"You're not allowed to say something bad about a video game because you can't make games yourself!" is how you sound like. You don't need to be a chef in order to give opinion on food. Same applies for everything else could it be music, painting, engineering, writing, programming and so on.

(I don't really care about what's Danny is doing frankly, if it suits some people and if there's a market for it then it's hard to say that he's wrong. Meeting demand is what a business is all about and he's a business.)
>>
>>16192267
>>Has never made anything themselves before
>Don't give crit when you don't have any fucking expertise on the subject.

Not really a fan of this argument, That's a really bratty attitude that insists that only chefs can criticize other chefs. You don't need to be a master chef to criticize something bland, underwhelming or tastes bad. It's that simple. Want another example to jerk over? "Don't criticize any game programming unless you're a game programmer." If there's a glitch or it's just plain bad it deserves criticism. Same goes for tumblr artists. I could go on and on with this.

Now, argument aside, **you're right.** Danny doesn't deserve the criticism. If you don't like it, it's simply not for you. No-one's telling you or anyone they have to buy it.

He's trying to fill market gaps. He already prioritizes foreign customers and makes dolls in darker shades than normal. He's trying to get more people who previously weren't into dolls, into dolls.
>>
>>16192372
we should touch dicks. or dolls.
>>
>>16192372
>Meeting demand is what a business is all about and he's a business

Or filling a demand people didn't know existed. If you put doll fans down in a venn diagram, there's intersections and gaps between people who like vinyl, resin, boy dolls, character dolls, small dolls etc. Those gaps may have names and some don't: tan dolls and brown dolls to name a couple, there are dollars/yen in there. Same goes for Spike. He's filling that vinyl/boy/character doll void. He's making new customers by covering those gaps. If existing customers like it, good, if they don't so what? he'll no doubt create new customers to cover all the naysayers.
>>
>>16192267
Do you think that >>16191406 is one of the whiners you hate? The way your posts read make it seem like you're a stuck-up cunt who thinks all opposing opinions are stupid. Sorry if that's not true and you're just misrepresenting yourself.

Can't speak for others, but as an artist with over a decade of sculpting and painting experience I am as qualified and free as anyone else in this hobby to give critique. The difference between us and Danny Choo is that he's making a very expensive product he's trying to sell, so he should at least attempt to appeal to as many people as possible.
In my humble opinion, he's not trying hard enough and if he lacks the skill to do it himself, he should hire somebody more competent to portray a character with these specific looks. If he's playdoughing his own OC dolls and people like it, fine, great for him, but he took such a boring middle rout with this job that it missed all the sweet spots. Either should've let Eiji/crimson cosplay him, like Miho/Mirai, or really gone for the authenticity of Spike.

But yeah, that's only what I believe and I hope you don't feel personally attacked, that's not my intention.
Obviously, if there are people willing to throw money at this doll, they obviously don't need more effort put into it but it's still sad that there's a step back when there could have been improvement.

There's a difference between criticism from peers and consumer feedback.

If he's making art, then consumers are irrelevant. However he's not in the doll biz for praise. He's making a commercial product and the consumers very much have a voice. Whether they criticize him directly or make a statement with their money is up to the consumer. But it's in his best interest to be open to feedback if he wants income and taxes to keep that investor visa going.

You don't have to be peers to criticize somebody's work and as this is a prototype for now, money isn't in play yet. And as you mentioned, feedback from potential buyers/fans/people in this hobby is all he can get for now.
If there are is an overwhelming number of people showing dissatisfaction with that prototype, I'm afraid he will disregards it because he has a many loyal fans kissing his ass every step of the way who will overshadow any valid complaints/suggestions.

>I'm afraid he will disregards it because he has a many loyal fans kissing his ass every step of the way who will overshadow any valid complaints/suggestions.

And that's the real tragedy clouded by all this discussion about criticism. People needlessly hanging off his pole will willingly throw money his way anyway so why put any effort into making this anything more than a mediocre product, in fact why do we care? We're not part of his target market anyway.

Got a question i hope to get some help with.

Im planning to buy some pureneemo dolls from Mandarake. Looking at those with the condition "unused / parts complete / packet damaged" (cause apparently you cant find one with the packet intact).

Problem is, even with the dolls which clearly state "unused" as the condition status theres a message saying something along the lines of "the product is used, so there may be some stains etc". Doesent matter which store on Mandarake i go to, they have some variation of that message for "unused" status dolls.

Im getting confused with choosing, i dont want a broken, scratched doll. How do you guys choose which store to order from on Mandarake, when all the stores cite the condition of the dolls as "unused" and have that disclaimer saying the product is used? Can you like, tell them to pic the one with the best condition when ordering, like specify it to Mandarake? They are all the same price on all these stores, so i cant just go and buy a more expensive one in hopes of it being in a better condition because its a few thousand yen pricier.

Wat do?
>>
>>16192912
They put that message there for all used items to cover their asses.
>>
>>16192912
You can mail them by the way and they'll reply in English. They have staff dedicated for that (actually one of my friend studying in Japan is working part time replying to customers inquiries).

I'm not sure if they'll be able to send you other pics but at least clarifying the state of the item should be ok.
>>
>>16192884
Just freely I don't have a case as I don't really take my girls very far.
>>
>>16192932
But what exactly am i supposed to trust? The disclaimer (saying its used) or the product condition (saying its unused)?

>>16192970
Whom do you think i should contact, Mandarake? Or the stores directly? Cause the latter seems like a big hassle, considering there are like 7-8 of them.

I was thinking of just dropping the links to the 2-3 dolls i want to order to Mandarake support staff (do they even have that?) before i make an order and ask them to clarify the state of those particular products for me, would that work?
>>
>>16192932
Forgot to mention, going off the actual condition its supposed to be unused. But the disclaimer says otherwise.

Perhaps the "used" is referring to the packet damaging, i dunno.
>>
>>16193016
>Whom do you think i should contact, Mandarake? Or the stores directly?
Use their form: https://mandarake.co.jp/en/inquiry/

Ask the question to the store where most of the items you want are located.

I never tried to contact them through their online form since I travel there and go in person, but their staff are usually extremely friendly and always willing to help. So ask away, will take 5 minutes of your time.
>>
>>16193016
Are there pictures? How do they look? Sounds like you're getting hung up on words which like others have said are just there to cover their asses, probably misunderstood attempt at "caveat emptor" since, you know it's a second hand market.

Personally I'd go for it. My first pureneemo was a used doll, and the description stated it was basically taken out for pictures, put back in the box and stored away from direct sun. Half a decade later I've bought and sold other dolls but she's my favorite.
>>
>>16193047
Will do, thanks.
>>
>>16193093
Well, the only pictures are of them inside the boxes, and a picture of their head zoomed in (while still inside the boxes).

So not much to go by when it comes to identifying damage.
>>
>>16192519
This argument is sort of sound, but the money speaks argument ignores the problem that people will sometimes spend money regardless of whether it's a product of the highest quality.

>>16192431
This guy hits on something. Spike here has appeal to a wider segment than the standard BJD like often an RAH has appeal outside of the niche 1/6 custom collectors and Sabers and Mikus compared to other dolls. Regardless of whether Spike is really all that great of a face sculpt or whether you really feel Danny phoned this one in, there's a chance for it to succeed (or even fail) on the merits of it being of a relatively uncommon sort in the market, so judging it by sales either positive or negative isn't a great measure.

Heck, he's apparently releasing a Frame Arms Girl doll and I think it looks bland and the head from the teasers is indistinguishable from a standard choo head (which likely means it is standard) yet I'm still tempted to get it because I'm a FA:G fag. Heck, I probably will and I'll swap out the head.

I got a little carried off there, but my main point is that with the popularity of FunkoPoPs and their ilk, we should really take the "money speaks" approach with a shaker of salt or two when talking about the aesthetics and quality of "collectables".
>>
>>16192912
I've bought multiple dolls from Mandarake that were marked similarly and they also had a disclaimer about being used. The ones I got were clearly not used and if there was any damage to the box it wasn't at all noticeable. But if you want to be 100% sure you should contact the store in question.

"unopened/box damaged" status is your safest bet. I've bought a pure neemo and some figures from mandrake, everything was mint quality perfect including the boxes (well one of the doll's knee joints couldn't let her leg straighten quite entirely, but this is a problem with some of their bodies apparently).

I don't know what it is about Azone original dolls that makes them sell out immediately. Their anime character dolls tend to be available for preorder until the very end and then go directly for discount prices. But most of the PureNeemo and 1/3 scaled dolls appear to be gone before they hit front page.
I don't even collect them, just really wondering what makes them so super popular, or are the available numbers just way lower than most other figures.

Also, are there any official number on how much the production value of a Vinyl doll i.e. Dollfie Dream is? I understand that fullsets drive the price up because of clothes etc. but I'm just interested in the body/head cost. I'd be curious about your guesses/estimates too.

Hooray for doll adventures! Great pictures, she's looking really alive. You did an awesome job there.

Wish there were more varying locations in my area. Everywhere is forest or crappy neighborhoods. The most interesting place is a huge graveyard, but I'd feel like it would be disrespectful to have photo shoots there while people around me are mourning.

I just get a bit sour when I see people defending his work so fiercely when he doesn't deserve it imo, but I'll do my best to just avoid the subject from now on because clearly there are no winners in the end.

The stuff from Alice is resale from taobao. You can find anything you want from Alice cheaper on Taobao. The stuff i've got from some of the best-looking stores on Taobao, the more high end Alice stuff, is truly shit compared to Ninestyle. Very little compares to Nine if you want honesty.

No official $ figures available.

The cost of materials is probably minimal. Maybe $20 for the plastic? (See $600 iphone component prices as example)

If they are made in totally Japan, labor cost, assembly, head make up artist cost, promotion, etc.. probably drives the prices up to the hundreds range.

So, its the salary for artists and assembly workers that influence prices and not the materials.

The head face-ups aren't applied by an assembly line machine.

The markup is most likely huge, especially considering how hard Volks are pushing DDs. First of all, Volks mainly sell through their own network so they're saving significant money by not going through third parties. (Your average hobby/game retailer is taking a 30~40% margin on anything he sells).

When it comes to plastic, a ton (1,000 kg) of high grade plastic is roughly sold $2,500. And that's for PMMA/Plexiglass. Vinyl's way less expensive. Considering a DD weight is <1.5kg, there's like $5 of plastic there top.

Volks R&D costs when it comes to DD themselves are fairly low too, the DD III Body has been in use for over 5 years now. So both R&D and mold costs have been recouped easily by now. It's not like they constantly improves the physics of their dolls (like an average brand is going to improve their product every 18~24 months).

Your money is mostly going toward everything that makes the DDs ecosystem alive. Marketing, Events, Collabs and so on. I'm not going to talk about clothing and such since these are already expensive on their own and profits made from cloths easily sustain what they cost to make.

I'd be surprised if a standard DD cost more than $100 to produce really.
>>
>>16196635

Please remember that a mold for casting vinyl is quite expensive. They likely use vinyl rotocasting, I believe a metal mold is around $10,000. Fine with bodies as it's used a lot, but if there are only ~100 LE of a kind made, that is maybe $100 for the head. It's probable they are close to 500 per LE, that's just $20 for the head material. But also, that's if they only do one at a time. Last doll factory I was in had at least 5 molds per head. There is also material loss in the casting process, cost of machinery operation, employee pay, etc.

Can't speak for their following but I'm particularly in love with the doe-eyed look paired with the understated mouths.

In contrast to character dolls, maybe it's because they don't have production designs and character art to live up to? I've bought a couple 1/3 character dolls and have to agree they come up a little short.

>I don't even collect them, just really wondering what makes them so super popular, or are the available numbers just way lower than most other figures.

The white/silver haired ones seem to be the most popular. Purple, blue, blond and brunette ones seem to last longer in webstores but every time a white/silver one is released the preorders are almost always crushed. Just my perspective since I missed out on the original Lilia and Cecily so for me every release is like a second chance.
>>
>>16196772
I'm well aware of how much mold costs (10K isn't that much also, it usually goes higher than that for complex parts.).

Now I'm talking about standard models which are massively produced (just like base bodies and arms/legs). Base bodies have been produced for over 5 years using the same molds. Even more so for hands, legs and arms. So costs have been recouped.

I still stand that standards DD cost $100 at most to produce. Machinery operation/wages are minimal if your production line is properly automated and considering it's Japan, I bet it is. (Volks is only 180 employees and most of them aren't in a factory making DDs but mostly working hard into making sure people buy these dolls).

Dolls are no different than any other business, no one is producing something at $200 to be sold at $380. It's fairly normal for production costs to only represent 25~30% of the final price of a product. You still have to add logistics, initial R&D, packaging, marketing, (licensing when applicable) and retailer margin (or distribution costs) onto that. So if standards DD would costs let's say $200 to make, they would never hit the shelves for <$400.

Clothes have a nice fit and the fabric is very nice compared to some others i had gotten recently. These seem to be more cottony and slightly stretchy and the previous skirt/undies i had gotten were basically nylon mesh and completely un-stretchable. .

You may have dropped a ton of money, but I can assure you, it's better to go for THE ONE of your dreams than paying any amount for something you're not gonna be 100% happy with. Especially if your budget is generous enough. Generally I advise against spending so much on your first doll, but since you already have the body, you already know what you'll be dealing with etc.

Man, that tiny Christmas tree is adorable, it looks 100% in scale with your dolls.
You should add halos above their heads, then the light reflection would fit perfectly.

I've also started preparing my dolls for Christmas. I wish I had more time, I got new stuff for a whole diorama but don't know how to squeeze it into my schedule.

You can look at art nudes for inspiration, but you should study other lewd doll photos and try to replicate those (at first). Dolls don't work like humans due to lack of flexibility and you have to use tricks, light and angles to make them look natural.

MDD and a Para40 which is MDD sized, more or less. I haven't tried then on DD yet but am confident they fit.

One thing to look out for when buying these is the necks. some look like they're designed to fit snugly around a bottle's neck, and some are more slack and look like they're supposed to sit further down the bottle. I really wanted to buy one with a reindeer applique on it yesterday but the neck was pretty wide. Might work as an off-the-shoulder sweater though?

Please explain it to an idiot like me, who never ordered anything from out of my country.

If i order like 4 dolls from Mandarake, will the shipping cost be a required thing to pay for each? Like, if i pick SAL, i need to pay it 4 times for 4 dolls or does it function based on the weight of the 4 dolls or something similar?

Im utterly clueless as to how fees for this stuff work, and i dont want to order 4 dolls from Mandarake and be forced to pay almost the same amount of money for shipping.
>>
>>16233675
In the case of Mandarake, it depends (as it would anywhere) on the combined dimensions/weight of the dolls, if either crosses a limit the shipment will be split as many times as needed. For Mandarake specifically, if you buy items from different storefronts they can't be shipped together and you will get a shipment from each storefront you buy from.

That said even if you pay for separate shipments the actual difference in price for the shipping will probably be relatively marginal since it's based on weight/dimensions anyway, although if you get taxed for imported goods in your country you will probably have to pay more then.

Ah, so its generally irrelevant if i buy them from different stores, good to know, thanks.

Another question for everyone, for dolls like pureneemo, can you get SAL shipping? That is, does every store offer it (and by relation Mandarake which gets them from those stores to send it to me)?

Is SAL even the way to go? Like i mentioned i never ordered anything ever, so i dont even know what the difference between EMS and SAL is in terms of whats better to use. I googled a little and the opinions greatly vary.

Go with registered SAL if you feel better saving some money, and don't mind waiting a couple extra weeks. I usually use EMS because I can't wait to play with my new things. I've only been hit with duties once, but that's just luck.

>>16233787

>>
>>16233902
How do i check if the dolls i want can actually be shipped by registered SAL?
>>
>>16234030
You can either ask before buying (they usually reply within 1-2 days), or during checkout you can select "Cancel order if SAL isn't available".

They do not offer SAL for very expensive or larger items. Although it depends on the store and how they pack it too.
Complex refused to ship a single DD via SAL and automatically changed to Air Mail while Sapporo shipped a DD body, an MDD body and some clothes/wigs in the same package via SAL.
But you shouldn't worry too much. Mandarake is a reliable chain of stores with many years of experience. I haven't had a single bad package with them, except SAHRA, but that was only due to their automated process, so they didn't pay attention to the note I left during checkout.

>Is SAL even the way to go?

Only if unregistered, uninsured and lost in the post with absolutely no recourse is the way you want your daughter to live.

It's not likely you'll have SAL as an option for something as big as a doll and from memory (I am open to correction) Mandarake does not under-declare items so you're gonna get slugged for any communist taxes regardless.

Everything I buy that is doll related gets sent via EMS, even clothing. I consider it the price paid to ensure the dockworker diversity quota doesn't get a Christmas present on my dollar.

>>16233870

If registered SAL is available to you it's better than nothing, but afaik it's still uninsured against damage/loss and is devastatingly slow. Especially around this time of year, your package would get absolute bottom priority. You might see it in February if you're lucky.

Yes, EMS is expensive but considering the logistics involved and the chances for accident or theft, and both the monetary and sentimental value of the items being shipped, I can only recommend a premium service.

Couple advice if you live in Europe or in countries where taxes are enforced strictly.

1. Don't have Mandarake ship to you, instead have them ship to a proxy in Japan.

2. Have your proxy combine all your packages. It costs WAY LESS to pay for a let's say 6kg package than 4 times 1.5kg, roughly 50% less.

1,500g SAL to the US is 3,850 yens.
6,000g SAL to the US is 8,350 yens.
Just do the maths. Even if you add Japan domestic shipping to the Proxy, it's still cheaper.

3. Have your proxy re-invoice your parcel so you can avoid Taxes (i.e declare value at $30 or something "used toys" is what I typically use). Obviously no insurance that way or you'd get $30 back.

I just received a parcel in SAL, and it took 22 days (to Europe). The package was large and over 3kg. At this time of year expect ~5 weeks in SAL to Europe/US (typically similar shipping times).

For heavy parcels, EMS is barely more expensive than SAL, so I'd go with that if I were you. Sometime SAL is more expensive than EMS since it uses large weight category (anything between 1,001g and 2,000g will cost you 3,850 yens, while EMS @ 1,500g is only 3,700 yens).

>>16235026
Insurance is pointless if you want to avoid taxes though. For it to work you need to declare the real value and sadly for people in Europe who get taxed harshly (~20% VAT on declared value+shipping for anything above like $40...), it's just bad.

I completely given up on using EMS unless I have a fake value declared otherwise it's 100% of the time duty-able in the UK.
>>
>>16233787
She looks scared. Cute outfit though!
>>
>>16235522
>1. Don't have Mandarake ship to you, instead have them ship to a proxy in Japan.

I dont have one nor do i know how to get in contact with one. I doubt i can just ask random people in Japan to help me out. So i guess im forced to ask Mandarake to ship directly.

And yeah im from Europe, 20% taxes and 10% for customs, amounting to 30% in total...

Problem is ive been reading up on some stuff about the experiences with shipping to my country from my fellow countrymen online and its really a shitty experience, which is why i feel im kinda forced to get EMS unless i want it to end up in the hands of some gypsy or something. I really wanted to do it with SAL, but with the shitty laws where im from i fear its too great a risk.
>>
>>16235611
When I said proxy I meant a company doing that, not just some random dude. I use Tenso, but there are tons of these companies out there providing a similar service, fees are rather low nowadays. (Cheaper than VAT for sure...)

I mostly use Tenso to evade VAT really since the few stores shipping overseas from Japan are reluctant into filling fake custom declaration forms. And you can be certain that for things as expensive as dolls (I don't order for less than 300 euros usually), you will get VAT/Custom Fees.

So at least I can get my parcels EMS'd with a fake declared value. I still have the risk of not getting my money back if parcel is lost/damaged, but frankly in EMS that's extremely rare.
>>
>>16233815
What I wouldn't pay for something like this that doesn't look like shit underneath the clothes.
>>
>>16235651
Hmm, now im contemplating using it, though it sounds overly complicated.

On the other hand it sounds dangerous... i dont want to fuck this up and im not all to finanicially stable to be able to just brush off a lost parcel.
Fuck... now i cant decide...

Over some rough estimate the dolls in total that im buying would be 42k yen. And since i dont know how much 3 dolls would weigh id estimate no more then 3kg (correct me if im wrong, since it would appear you got experience) that would amount to some 7k yen going off the data from Mandarake FAQ.

So it amounts to around 49k yen, i dunno if id go and gamble with something like that Tenso site or just cough up the 30% on that price that id have to pay. Btw, when they evaluate the VAT/customs fess, they dont include the price of EMS ofc? They would only take 30% from the 42k that is the dolls only, right?
>>
>>16235711
You pay VAT on shipping too. Shipping is considered a service you "import" (i.e. you pay Japan Post) so it is subject to EU VAT. Typically you pay: VAT on declared value+shipping and a flat custom clearance fee by whoever is handling your parcel in your country (£13.5 here in the UK).

As for using a proxy, it's not complicated really. They assign you a Japanese address + phone number, you enter it on any Japanese site you order from (it's great to order doll cloths that aren't shipped overseas too!), you wait for all your parcels to arrive at the proxy warehouse, consolidate them into one big parcel, re-invoice it, choose shipping method, pay and that's it.

If you're super paranoid, just pay taxes and declare the real value. I mean you can't have it all. Fast, convenient and cheap and safe. Have to make sacrifices somewhere. I never had an EMS parcel lost/damaged ever in my life and I ordered 100's of them over the course of 15 years.

So what happens if your uninsured/under-declared item is lost, damaged or stolen?

If I lived in a communist country and had to pay ransom on my daughter to ensure her safe arrival I would without hesitation. Money can always be found again but cute girls are a rare and precious commodity.
>>
>>16235711

Alright guys, back from the store and took some pics.
Top row are what were in stores and bottom row are sweaters I've showed earlier.

Starting with the top, not including the scarf, the first two measure roughly 7.5 inches around or the bust or 3.75 inches laying flat. They come from the same maker as the red one in the bottom row but the necks are notably wider.

In the upper right the busts measure 9 inches around or 4.5 inches laying flat.

Bottom left, same brand as the first two but as you can see the neck is smaller, since they didn't have doll sin mind when making these the sizing is always a crapshoot.

Bottom right, the sweater profiled here >>16231205. 7.5 inches around or the bust or 3.75 inches laying flat

I was also this nervous when I first ordered from Japan. From what I understand you're getting PureNeemo dolls? Or was that another anon?

I live in a shitty European country with 25% tax and around 12-17% customs on imports above 20 Eur + additional costs for the customs process. I would rather give up the hobby than pay them every damn time. Here is my experience with imports:
Regarding proxy services (like >>16235651 suggested), if the package is big and the declared value is suspiciously low (like exactly under the cut) they send you a nice little priority shipped message (that you also have to pay for) that invites you to present them the invoice for this parcel as well as proof of payment by e-mail or even in person. This can drag out delivery another week or more.

Customs also tends to remember if you've faked declared value by a lot and won't get off your back for many orders that follow.

I would suggest you get one doll at first. Registered SAL is safe even if it can take 2-4 weeks (my country's mail hasn't lost a single one of the dozens I've ordered) and customs is more likely to believe that nothing of value is in the package. Ask Mandarake VERY politely if they can mark the package as used goods (on your third or fourth order you may even try to request if they can declare lower value and assure them you will not hold them accountable for losses or problems etc.).
Even if customs catches that package, the aftertaste of the tax/customs won't taste too foul in your mouth because it won't be that huge of a cost all at once and you get a chance to test out if you even like dolls in person.

And do not worry too much. The more tense you are the more likely it is you'll attract some kind of bad situation. Have a chill approach because the hobby isn't fun if you stress out too much.

Here are two examples:
28.8 x 12 x 7.3 cm / 298g
28.8 x 12.3 x 7.3 cm / 331g

Depends on accessories and how much clothes are in the set.
>>
>>16239066
Nice, thanks.
Any guesstimate how much the actual packaging weighs? I dunno if thats something you get as info (the combined weight of the packaging + the doll) when you order, but if you do it would be nice to know.

Cant be more then 1kg, right?
>>
>>16239097
For one doll? I doubt it would be more than 600g. Mandy packs super light and their boxes aren't heavy either.
>>
>>16239060
I've been saying this since the pictures started appearing.
>>
>>16239289
So about 1kg for a doll+packing.

Thats allot less then i expected, might not get too buttfucked by EMS.
>>
>>16181399
Don't listen to the other guy.
Yes, you have to lay down on the ground to take those kind of photos.
You'll feel super pro, I promise.
Either that or wonder what you did wrong in life.

thats some fucken bullshit black magic right there

How do you guys deal with the fact that while your doll area is spotless the rest of your house is a disgusting mess and you cannot take your daughters outside of their glass cocoon for fear of them getting dirty / having to endure your abhorrent piggish ways?

>casual clothes

It really is harder than it should be to find casual clothing that is all three of affordable, good looking and good quality. Plenty of uniforms and floofy lolita/victorian dresses, but I've got enough of all that already.

Also Red-eyed Miku a cute
>>
I almost bought a really small Alice doll from Mandrake the other day.

Was it an Azone or some other brand? All the1/12s are adorable little things and they make good pets/playthings for the larger girls.

I myself have just fucking abandoned affordable and just get the Choo shit. It looks good fits DD fine and I like it. But it costs so fucking much I mean fuck.

I wonder if Choo will ever make a sister or mini version smart doll. Choo-made DDS or MDD sized clothing would be nice to have.

she looks scary, and not like her promo pic. is it because of the light? I am afraid to get her now

I wouldn't worry too much. Personally I'm not a fan of this type of faceup (unnatural colored/very defined eye-shadow) but the scariness of it is most likely the fault of unflattering light.
There haven't been any objectively ugly or bad DD faceups in a very long time.

Did the box look like this? If so it was Azone. I believe they did "Japan-only" 2HUs and Keions.

To me it looks like the camera decided the right ankle had the most contrast to lock on to. What kind of camera did you use? Can you focus manually with it? If you have manual focus is there a magnifier? Do you have a tripod?

I don't understand a single word of the photography chat in this thread
>>
>>16246521
Beautiful! Simply beautiful.
>>
>>16205205
I think the issue is less sexualization and more the spirit and thrust of the threads, which is the discussion of BJDs and other similar scaled dolls which for most of them actual sexual interaction is impossible (in an intended sense and not in a "you can jerk-off on anything" sense) and more importantly the care, design, shopping, and culture aren't the same as for other types of dolls like sex dolls or even most fashion dolls.
>>
>>16246575
I was recently looking at the promo page for a sony mirrorless and they touted the curved blades that gave circular bokeh, and it made me realize that there are people out there who don't like polygonal bokeh, which kind of hit me since I've always associated bokeh with pentagons and other polygons in older photographs and rather like it when they look like that. For me those irregular, flat edges in >>16246149
almost look "right."
>>
>>16246897
It's just a matter of taste. Just remember that curved blades cant be circular at all apertures. They'll still have a shape, it'll just be less pronounced.
>>
>>16246726

No. I am not very good at this game.

I struggle to get a bust photo that flatters the subject. And then things like a stray cat hair or their eyes not quite lined up sneak in. I so routinely miss such things until they're blown up on my screen and it's frustrating.
>>
>>16247833
Adjusting his head a tiny bit downward might make him appear less like a deer staring into headlights. Also, I don't know how yellow the natural skin tones of the Azones are but maybe try to adjust that a bit either with the settings in your camera or through post-processing in photoshop or w/e software you have available. Worth mentioning is that 4chan strips exif data off of photos so if you saved a photo with a certain color profile it might end up looking very different when posted here. Other sites such as flickr doesn't do this.

Really though, in my experience the best way to improve is to look at other peoples photos, both of dolls and people, and try to get some inspiration that way. Then practice and practice some more, with digital cameras it doesn't cost anything but time to take a bunch of photos and see what works best.

>>
>>16248012
a good trick is to put up a section of fabric (or say a shirt with a non-distracting print or flat color) as the background of the photo so it's not just "here's a doll in my house", puts them into kind of an empty photo void unless they're interacting with something specific
>>
>>16248411
you did end up paying the ransom, so it worked.

>>16247833
have them interact with something other than staring into the camera
try to get warmer colors with photoshop raw
pose the arms. just looking down on something she's holding would already make a difference.
>>
and find some livelier backgrounds.
>>
>>16251500
I feel I improved when I took photos were they were doing something or interacting with something. And not looking at the camera.

So, I just got into this hobby when I bought some Obitsu bodies and heads. I wanted to faces on after everything got delivered but I couldn't resist when the first came in. I wasn't aiming for a style from any anime in particular.
