subject or time period doesn't really matter, but the comfier the better
Do you mean documentaries made in Japan or that talk about Japan or talk about japanese stuff or all of the above?

why not watch asadora? or taigadrama
These are usually very long, emotinoal and comfy as hell.
Currently going through 'Massan'. I'll be a sad ride once I am finished and realize the story came to an end.
A recent documentary series I watched was 'Joanna Lumley's Japan', whilst maybe subsistence wise there's not much, I find her accent hilarious.

Most docs I know from Japan are not that comfy. But some of the sad ones can be interesting.
But what I've enjoyed kicking back with are the NHK 歴史秘話ヒストリア series. Compact and informative stuff about various points of Japanese history. I can't find subs unfortunately though.
I transcribed this one for fun a while back as practice and it was pretty interesting. It's about Matsuura Takeshirô, the explorer who "discovered" Hokkaido.

most of NHK's weekend programming is comfy documentaries of some sort or another.
Japanorama! They even mention ZUN every episode.
The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief was good.
Tokyo Noise was... peculiar, but well worth watching I'd say.
thanks senpaitachi, I prefer comfy but it's still fine if they're not

Man, the various Japanese states must've completely ignored Hokkaido for the longest time.

It seems so. It's a bit like Pacific Northwest in the US with Matsuura as comparable to Lewis and Clark. I should have stated it a bit differently though because I don't think he "discovered" Hokkaido so much as he "discovered" the Ainu which is what that doc is more about.
