Depends on what you consider relatively short, and when you consider them to be dead. H!P's Berryz and C-ute were very successful financially for over 10 years without ever bringing in new members.

AKB is still financially successful, though they obviously have to pump in new blood to keep the interest. The problem with the sister groups is that the market is just not that big in other cities. The Tokyo metro area has like 40 million people to appeal to. There's much less money to make in the other cities.

2nd gen is actually really good they just never feature them on variety so they never have a chance to get a big fan base. There are 3 excellent 2nd gens, and 3-4 good 2nd gens. That's about as much as you can hope for. 3rd gen will only have a couple great members, too. The problem with Nogi is that they had a massive 1st gen, but most of them were and still are whos, but they had enough amazing girls to form an amazing unchanging senbatsu.
