This question is really hurting my mind.
Aren't all youkai eastern, Shinto variants of western demons? There's oni, that literally ARE demons, but couldn't a youkai also be spooky?
If anything, Touhou realistically would be a lot scarier, as long as the Touhou is graphically realistic.
I'm not saying it's okay for a person who's been dead (Yuyuko) to have funny dialogue. That'd make me poo my pants and leave the series. I mean, physically realistic.

And why am I getting so confused over this? This is confusing me, and I might need to check if I'm sane before I go insane over something so simple.

The gap hag scares me the most.

Onozuka Komachi is my favorite Touhou in every regard. She's beautiful to the point of being attractive in every way, charming, intelligent and philosophical, rich, interesting, and has every other kind of appeal I could think of.
And she's certainly scary as hell as a scythe-bearing goddess of death.

SPOOK WARNING

Kogasa is the cutest.

Yuyuko is cool because she's a ghost and can also kill anyone instantly. Youmu is a half phantom and also cute because she's a dork.

Koishi kind of falls into this category because she can just show up without you noticing until she's right up on you but she seems fairly harmless.

Yukari is the most unnnerving, in a "something moves in the corner of your vision" or "something staring at you from the small cap in your closet door" kind of way. Probably the most terrifying to encounter. She's definitely the most youkai-like youkai.

Adding to your comments, frankly, another reason Koishi is rather scary is because literally everything she does, she does it on a whim. This means she's the very definition of an unpredictable person. That's a bit of a red flag. Plus, the whole subconscious thing.
Yukari is certainly goddamn terrifying. The fact that her abilities are vague and unexplained, plus the fact that she does everything from the shadows is pretty fuckin' unnerving.

Also, consider the following: Doremy also holds potential. She's the master of dreams. She can consume, create and alter dreams at will. She can potentially (extra emphasis on 'potentially') torture you endlessly on your dreams- The time the human brain needs rest the most, and the only time where a human can truly feel at ease.
