Downloading 1.5GB videos off Nico Nico Douga, how?

Not sure if this will help you, but here goes. I use firefox. When I want to download a vid from nico, Ill go to the video page, right click and hit "Inspect Element". From there, I go to the network tab, click the "type" column header and then have to reload the page. Eventually, an item for the video will come up, sometimes it is a mp4/flv with the name of like "smile---" plus some other stuff behind it, from there you can right click that item to open it in a new tab, at which point the html5 player (I think) will open the video and you can then save video as by right clicking the play button.

More recently, the type will be "objectSubdoc" for a short period of time when loading the page before changing to a mp4/flv which has restricted access when you try to open it. You can still download these, but you must do so when the item is still a "objectSubdoc". and the process is a little more complex. I'm not sure why but I wasn't able to use firefox's default down loader because the file would become restricted before completing the download and the video would be incomplete. So I used the firefox addon "DownloadThemAll!" which downloads things faster by splitting the file into parts, its a pretty neat addon. Anyways, the process for grabbing the vid in this "objectSubdoc" case is: You open the link of the item, and hopefully you will be prompted to download the vid, use DownloadThemAll, and be sure to save the file type as a mp4/flv, which ever one the video is supposed to be. If the download prompt doesn't appear, go into the address bar and take out a string of text identical to "start=0&starti=0" and hit enter to load it, I'm not sure why but this would bring up the download prompt for me. then use DownloadThemAll and you got the video.

I'm shit at explaining stuff and I realize my method is probably more complex then it has to be, but it gives me piece of mind knowing that it works. Just ask for clarification if you want.

Thank you very much for your feedback. It indeed seems like there's some sort of ticket which restricts access after a random short period, and this makes things even trickier.

I actually followed your indication and used DownloadThemAll (after inspecting and finding the "objectSubdoc" object which latches the video) and it did the trick!! I'm really grateful. One bonus is that I had a constant high download speed (topped at 1.5MB/s).

Another thing I noticed. I only got served the high-resolution file when I was in 4G (tethered) and it would never trigger with an ADSL connection.

So now I know what to do in order to avoid countless failed download attempts for these high-resolution files.

Sweet! I'm glad I could help. It does seem like there are very few of us that use nico, yet it's one of the only viable places I can get a bunch of music I enjoy.

I didn't even know there are over 100MB videos on niconico. Are those something you can only access on premium? I've also been using nicofox, and it only finds the ones compressed under 100MB.

I might be wrong but I think they're accessible to everyone. I can't really tell because I actually have a premium account. What I do know is that you can't access them when logged out (alt low-res download served instead, checked with youtube-dl).

Also, I did manage to DL a high-resolution file at home via ADSL, despite my low DL speed. So you don't absolutely need high-speed broadband like 4G or fiber.

My bad. The first example actually serves a 47MB file and nothing else. I mistakenly thought it was because of the connections I had when testing. So it's not relevant (same for that Forza Horizon 3 video which only serves a 91MB file).
