I'm not a fan of コント and I hate 漫才. But I do like me some comedians.

I like almost everyone in Shabekuri except fucking Fukuda, that is Neptune, Tokui, Cream Stew.
I also like Ariyoshi even though I don't really consider him a comedian.
Downtown is, of course, up there too, but the actually talented one is obviously Matsumoto.
Bakarhythm is one of those really clever comedians who aren't naturally funny, but make up for it with their sharp wit.

I think IPPONグランプリ is a great test to see who's funny and who's not.

My personal favorite is Nagareboshi, whom I first saw on The Manzai 2013.

Their manzai is a combination of ippatsu gags and great acting from Chuuei and really original, funny scripts by Takiue. I love how they do loads of anime/game references despite their audiences at solo-shows being 99% women, but what really makes them great are their meta-skits built with characters and ideas from their previous skits.
It was also fascinating to see how they have evolved over time from early 00's; Chuuei didn't do any ippatsu gags and had a ridiculous outfit (all-back hair, a cat-print t-shirt, barefoot) and Takiue acted much harshly against him (unlike now when he goes through the sets half-laughing), not to mention all the small details on their traditional skits like "Sengoku Manzai", "Obakeyashiki", "Tsundere" and "Hijigamisama".

Both konto and manzai suck if the comedians are boring and predictable, most common fault being a tsukkomi who just keeps repeating and explaining what the boke just did). While being an MC or on hinadan is completely different skill altogether (on-the-fly communication instead of preparing material and performing it), it's still comedy.

I love IPPON (and oogiri in general) too because the competitive atmosphere drives people up to and past their limits and the judging system is really solid (excluding the A and B block differences).
