The last mobage I touched, im@s, had two stats for its characters, attack and defense, with very simplistic buff/debuff abilities. KanColle's like a full blown RPG in comparison. It also had events every month, but 2/3 of those were gacha based. Despite all that, it was crazy popular. Even browser game knockoffs like the monster musume one suffered from horribly inbalanced stats that made entire classes just poor man's versions of others. I realize KanColle could be so much more and I'd say it's been mismanaged, but from that perspective I'm happy with what we've got. At least every girl is usable and there's all sorts of actual planning and speculation to do every event.

Both forms have their uses. But shelling phase and survivability are much more useful than aerial phase, and as it is now there are many regular CVs that are slightly less useful in aerial support or shelling support. However, there are currently only 3 armoured CVs in the game. In other words, the advantages that regular cranes have over armoured ones are slight, while the shelling phase and survivability advantages armoured cranes have over regular ones is pretty big.

I don't play those, but my point is that the core game itself is still the central theme that everything else revolves around. They probably do run collabs, but whatever happens ties back into the game somehow through redeemable codes or something, and/or isn't as major a thing as an entire IRL event like the Naval Review or the upcoming Saury WhateverItIs Festival.

By comparison, KanColle (Flash, not Arcade etc.) more or less survives on secondary revenue streams, since the game itself isn't that profitable, or could even be running at a loss by this point. It's give-and-take, really. The others have gacha that the Japanese seem more than willing to splurge cash on, so there's already an element of profit there. The secondary stuff like figurines and keychains is just icing on the top in terms of profits. Sure, people spend money on KanColle too, but it's comparatively much lower maintenance in that respect, unless you're some crazy tryhard who stocks up on repair goddesses. So the profit for the corporate overlords has to come in from somewhere else.

I'm not exactly complaining, by the way. The only reason I got into this shitty flash game is because I don't have to spend as much money on it to acquire cute girls. I mean, you can get by in all those other mobages without spending a dime, I'm sure, but the odds probably also stack up against you that much quicker in terms of loot and/or drops. Exactly. If anything, the game is getting less and less attention as they diversify their revenue streams - we /biz/ now - across a wider spectrum of stuff through the power of franchising. Yet at the same time, the game is potentially the best way to bait people into buying into the franchise as a whole, so they can't quite afford for it to die just yet. At least not until they come up with a proper successor project for it. And no, I don't think the Arcade will be that successor. It's more SEGA's thing than it is Kadokawa's, although I'm sure they still get a cut of the profits.

Hypothetically, if the game itself dies, I'm not sure what'll happen to everything else - it's too big to just implode overnight. Chances are they'll have to go into panic overdrive to keep the momentum going. I doubt anyone's working on the so-called "Phase 2" at this point, either. It seems more like they're barely managing to push the content updates through, on top of our quarterly doses of suffering. Phase 2, if it even exists, is probably on ice.

Surely editing stats values isn't that hard, the hardest part is making a successful kai 2 remodel. Kasumi and Asashio were major successes not in stats, but in design, which ultimately expands their figure lines. Kasumi was especially successful with fairy mustache Kasumi and an event entirely to herself. I think that's the first time they actually tried to make one of the historic fleets popular while before it was just a simple quest and routing. But still, they have significantly slowed down for whatever reason, unless they themselves set up these real life events and gatherings, which is pretty crazy, that should be the job of Kadokawa.
