Is there some reason Chino from Gochiusa seems to have like, an order of magnitude more dakimakura than like any character from any show, ever? I get that it's moe crap, but there's a ton of moe crap. I don't see anything about gochiusa that really stands out.

Covers are folded, of course. They take up no more than an inch in thickness.
As for inner pillows, the ones sold in Japan are typically vacuum packed, so they easily fit in a suitcase. You'll need to wait coming back home to open and enjoy it though.

how often do you wash your daki and how many washes does a daki typically survive until you start seeing damage?

i have been hand washing mine every couple months, and try to go as long as possible without washing. i get nervous that if i wash it too much i will either ruin the colors or softness.

then, what about the actual pillow inside? i haven't even considered washing that...

So I just bought a second cospa smooth knit daki recently and I noticed that it isn't as stuffed as my old cospa pillow. Both pillows were shipped compressed, so I don't see how compression could have destroyed my new pillow. Did they reduce the amount of filling?

I cannot recommend any artist. Most decent artists through Pixiv start at about 300 USD. You may be able to find cheaper on Deviantart but in my opinion the quality is less aswell.

kimmy77 is the only deviantart artist I've found that I like. His prices are cheap, but the period of open commissions is very small.

Is this solely just the material used in the pillow body exterior (which shouldn't make a difference with a cover)? I currently have two fills already, one from some ebay listing from the old guide which is fairly heavy but has lost its shape over the years, and a cheap one from bed, bath and beyond which is too short, too soft, and too light.

You're right in asking to avoid throwing money out of the window. Might not seem like it, but the fabric used in the pillow body can be important in the feel of the daki, even though it's covered. Best covers are in soft, stretchable materials (Lyctron feels like heaven), and when you hug and squeeze it, it stretches around your hand/arm/body to follow its shape, therefore "wrapping" you. But if the underlying fabric is not as soft and stretchable as the cover, you'll lose this effect and a quality cover will feel like one made out of a lower quality material.
That said, I don't have Cospa pillows, but I heard they're not very good. Especially for the price you have to pay (including shipping). Smooth knit is only stretchable in one way, while every doujin cover is now in 2-way tricot which is much better. I don't know Twill, but I believe it might be even worse. Not to mention they're 150cm long, doujin covers are usually 160cm.

If you're after an improvement over your actual pillows, you should get a DHR6000, it's just the best one out there. It's going to cost you a bit over $100, but if you have quality doujin 160cm covers (especially Lyctron ones) it will make a world of difference. Otherwise it might not be worth it, if you have Cospa/Movic/bootleg quality covers you might want to save money now and keep your pillows (or buy a cheap one) until you'll get a real quality cover. I bought more than once on Booth, logging in with my Pixiv account. I used BiginJapan forwarding service, and it was for preorder items every time. You can just place the order yourself on Booth, pay with your credit card (it will be billed immediately) and put the address of your forwarder of choice as destination. Should you use BiJ don't forget to buy one of their forwarding tickets anytime after you place your order, but before they receive the item (when it ships).
Otherwise you can simply ask your favorite proxy to buy it. They'll do the same procedure and will notify when receiving the item.

I just put one in for my creepy waifu with an artist on deviantart, kimmy77. He's not a nippon, but his shit is good. His commissions fill fast cause he is prob the only english speaking commissioner that isn't a stack of shit. Also, he is really cheap at about 60 or so dollars a character/side.

I successfully ordered a cover there, but it was a real hassle and not worth it (the item itself is great though). I had to ask the store owner if he accepts Paypal, in Japanese of course. He replied yes, I believe he literally created a Paypal account just for me. He asked me to send the exact amount (11k yen), so I had to take into account Paypal fees and reverse calculate the amount to send for him to receive 11k (in Japan they usually pay with bank transfers, where the fee is paid upfront by the buyer).
In the end it's better to let a proxy handle everything.

Seller's description of the item sounds good: 160x50 size (same as original, and bootlegs are typically 150cm long); smooth knit material (same as original); "genuine unopened goods with Kadokawa copyright stamp" (it's the license holder). I'd say it is legit, not a bootleg, just sold by a scalper making a profit out of it.

Smooth knit material is not the softest one, but licensed cover makers rarely use better ones. You can easily buy it yourself with a forwarding service (like BiginJapan), as placing orders on Amazon.jp is a piece of cake. Or you can use your favorite proxy.

Is it normal for a Daki to loose colour? I haven't used the cover for months. Had it stored away and now it feels like the colours are blend. Maybe I am just imaging it. If it's for an old, already released item, depends on the manufacturer's willingness to rerelease that cover. Sometimes they do.

Yeah, looks like you can place an order for an older cover when they open mail orders anytime a new one is added. Any decent proxy should then be able to figure out the rest and place the order for you. You just need to check size and material options and decide what you want, and instruct the proxy accordingly. 2way Roica is probably the best choice there, as they use P80 (high quality provider).
They will attend C91 in December, so they might add a new design then and you can place your order. Keep an eye on their website, and eventually get in touch with your favorite proxy in advance, so they can check the rules for ordering. Good proxies are always willing to help, as your orders make their business.

If you're in the US it's a pretty nice affordable pillow, you can ask for a custom size as well. You order on the site, email or phone them when making a custom order. It's an alternative to the Japanese pillows. Go for 20x65 when ordering on Royal pillow, that size fits 20x60 dakimakura covers. Don't get the feather filled pillows, they will poke through the cover.

The stuffing is "simply" polyester filling, though it's shaped beforehand like the pillow and is quite stuffed, so the cover can stretch without wrinkles. But the real difference is in the outside fabric, as it's quite thick but in the meantime very soft and stretchable. Clothing / cloth in general is fine. Just remember to shave. Long sweatpants are also great for longevity, because before my leg hair would fuck up dakis and end up with lots of stray hair that I'd have to pluck from time to time.
