I like both higurashi and danganronpa.

There was a magic time, ten years ago, when Higurashi was the big thing. All the lolis grew up.

To be fair i like Danganronpa and i have bought Umineko along with Higurashi i am anticipating buying the next chapter when it comes out in early October.

To be honest anon without Danganronpa i would have never been into Visual Novels in the first place, searching for dark and mysterious classics like Saya No Uta, Euphoria and also Steins Gate. Im sure it will be a matter of time before the fanbase begins to expand more into the Visual Novel genre and finds some dark games for their cravings like i do.

Higurashi was good back in the day, same with Stein's Gate which came out over 6 years ago. Danganronpa was an old PSP game which was rereleased on Vita, censored. (The PSP version had red blood instead of bright pink. ). I guess the American market is like a vacuum when it comes to these games, so kids think these are new.

You raise a good point OP.

At my college anime club (yes, I know, but I'm a normalfag who requires social interaction and these people are easy to get along with) tons of people who attend have watched the Fate/Stay Night anime and played Dangonrompa, Steins;Gate and of course fucking Katawa Shoujo. But the moment you bring up the F/SN VN, Tsukihime, Higurashi/Umineko, or even shit like Muv-luv, Saya no Uta or G-senjou no Maou their faces go blank.

And it's not like these people aren't dedicated weeaboos. They'll be able to rattle off names of video game music production people that I couldn't remember if you paid me, they bring up older animation work from studios and animators, obscure works that usually are the signs of a true 'otaku' in the making. But the moment you bring up some of the definitive Japanese VNs the jury is out.

I chuck it up to the barrier of entry honestly. Think about how much trouble it is to set your unicode to Japanese and find a PS2 ISO of the game you want to play so you can import the voice patch. Or even just downloading a torrent if you haven't done it a lot before. They wouldn't even know were to look. Pushing for official translation releases on digital distribution platforms and whatnot is going to be the end of the 'secret club' that is the Japanese VN community, because the moment these barriers are broken is the moment they come flooding in.

That's why Higurashi, Dangonrompa, and Steins;Gate got so popular: official releases on easy-to-use platforms.

Higurashi's good, but it simply wasn't my cup of tea. Even the makeshift "throw darts at a dartboard and see what you can come up with" waifus of DR on their own gave me a better experience.

Lots of good shit flies under the radar of EOPs in every medium.
