It's hard to explain exactly, but there's this maturity of the characters and their actions which often isn't present with high schoolers. It's kind of like, "yeah, this is the real world", instead of a rose-colored fantasy high school where the classes are always skipped, clubs are everything, and inconsequential stuff like watching porno is literally the greatest sin a man can commit. In other words, it almost feels like the "high school" setting is akin to a fantasy setting, a fantasy high school with fantasy characters acting out a fantasy that college-age characters don't need to.

Every high school game isn't written by the same individual, so I don't mean to say every high school game is written in that certain way with characters acting out a fantasy. It does seem to me, though, that the majority are. Additionally, I'm sure someone's going to think "this is fiction, of course the characters are acting out a fantasy, it's all fake". However, I think that's not a very meaningful observation. Realism is certainly attainable in fiction writing. Whether it's as important to others as it is to me, I'm not sure, but I do value it highly and as far as I can tell the realism of games that don't take place in high school on average are drastically higher than those that do.

No, but rather, the tendency of their actions to be fantasy. To clarify, I meant that high schoolers in eroge tend to lack the maturity which high schoolers should have, because the works in general revolve around fantasy which games featuring college-aged or above characters do not. When I was in my final two years of high school (wherein most eroge seem to take place), it became apparent that we were all on the precipice of adulthood. Most of my friends had jobs, sex was abound, political activism was taken seriously by many, and so on and so on. This all took place in the background of studying hard for college. Yet, in almost all of the high school games I've read, this is all discarded to maintain fantasy. Fantasies such as, the world is perfect (except for small problems for the protagonist to overcome), girls are pure and unknown to sex, politics don't exist, classes don't exist (except when a "study group" scene is deemed necessary). I have no issue with the high school setting itself, but rather the fantasy it brings with it so often. That fantasy demeans characters and forces them into banal archetypes because anything more isn't permitted by the fantasy. In fact, it is common for characters to be contrived entirely out of fantasy, such as violent tsunderes which would never exist in reality. This lack of realism, reflected in the characters lack of maturity, in something I do not like at all.

As mentioned, this is not a necessary element of the school setting. There are high school games which do not conform to the fantasy. It ultimately comes down to the skill of the writer - and his desire to avoid the fantasy - but it seems to me that the state of the industry now and for awhile has led to most writers either lacking the skill or desire to avoid the fantasy, creating a consistent deluge of fantasy high schools with fantasy characters acting out a fantasy. It is this which I resent.

There's a lot of variance to high schools depending on where you're from. When I was in high school people mostly ignored politics, didn't care much about world problems (maybe because I was in a wealthy area), and I hardly felt any tension during senior year when applying to university. One thing I've noticed over the last years is that people frequently have subtly different opinions than I do, and I get asked frequently how I can play so many moege/charage. The answer is relatively simple... I read about 20 times faster than most of the rest of you - with the exception of a few bibliophiles. What is a true chore, taking up tens of hours for you, might very well only be a short eight to ten hours for me. Reading that fast - whether in English or Japanese - gives me a greatly different perspective than a lot of the others here.

My stamina for reading in general and reading VNs in particular is far higher than the rest of you. Fundamentally, the idea of breaking a VN up over the course of weeks or months is alien to me, since even the longest ones will only take me about thirty hours (even in a busy week, I can usually manage to squeeze that in during breaks and meals).

One of the reasons people tend to get tired of VNs is a lack of stimulation due to low reading speed. I read fast enough that a good VN's stimulation will be close to constant, whereas a slow reader will sometimes come to feel 'in-between' scenes that are meant to be short and informative as painful and long. I burnout less often than you. For me, burnout is a process that takes months. There is another type of burnout that I experience when I play a truly great VN... but this is something that is almost like that feeling you get after a night of good sex, so it is closer to 'pleasurable exhaustion'.

I think most nukige are catered to the older college attenders, with really little to no emphasis on complex stories for most of the studios out there. It's probably because they really don't know what their target audience wants; most of the time, all they ever seem to do is take popularity polls for characters. If they subtly identified their target age group using this it would help inform their decisions in choosing game presentation and plot progression.

If you really want to find the "great men" of our current state, they'd be the fan translators working to bring titles over. Pure x Connect had university student heroine and even a full-fledged working heroine who both drank alcohol, so it's not like pure love and older than high school age are mutually exclusive matters. Or Damekoi's Himeo. Sure, they're rare exceptions but I don't really find those traits in any way in conflict with pure love. The point is that this kind of realism is not well regarded or well received among usual eroge fans. I'm pretty sure that if you'll ask Japanese fans, you won't find many that would prefer older than high-school setting regardless of their actual age.
The main point of eroge or even ranobe and anime has been about providing that rose-colored 青春 fantasy for quite a while now.
Indeed there are some low-price nukiges for a more casual audience that is far from core eroge fans and those generally tend to have older characters, more realistic exposition, things like prostitution, etc.

Personally I prefer high-school settings. And it's not about treating the world there from a point of view of our real world and its realism, it's about accepting the world there as real for its characters and enjoying characters living there thoroughly. It's among the lines of feeling that it would be nice if world was like that instead of the real one, it would have been nice to have adolescence like that, it would have been nice to have friends like that, and other things like that.

Of course it's up to you if you don't feel like that or don't like worlds like pictured in high-school eroge, but I think it would be quite frustrating when mainstream in the medium is so different from your preferences.

Probably people who got tired of the typical high school eroge setting already stopped playing visual novels a long time ago. But it's common sense that the very small niche alive audience that will buy visual novels is into that.
Very difficult for developers to deviate from such formula in those circumstances without losing more buyers.

I remember 4 years ago finding an absolute gem. I don't remember all the details and I might be wrong on a few. The character she was voicing had black hair and was supposed to be shy and a bit refined, the setting was a rural but seaside town. It was so bad and I hate myself for never bookmarking it. Senren Banka's biggest problem is the routes.
Some of the heroines feel like as soon as you enter their routes their personality takes a 180 compared to the common route to facilitate the drama the writer had in mind as well as said drama just not being very good.
The pacing and flow was also poor, like Yoshino's route dragging on forever when Yoshino just wasn't very interesting.
Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the game and don't regret buying it but like the past couple of Yuzusoft titles the routes have been mostly passable rather than good.
