I find it incredibly hard to find specialised forums or boards where the nips have niche communities to discuss interests. It's probably partly because of poor SEO, but even then I haven't had any luck beyond blog-style websites. Is all discussion really concentrated at 2ch? I honestly find it very hard to believe considering the hundreds of thousands of forums the English-speaking part of the internet has.

Younger people mostly don't use 2ch at all these days. It also lost a good part of its original population in 2013 too, especially content contributors, due a certain incident.

You can see that smaller BBS, like shitaraba for example, have a lot less activity than they used to as well.

The trend is that considered as a whole, "Japanese internet" has been moving away from forums and onto social media, twitter being the juggernaut there.

Long story short, 2ch had a premium membership service which you could subscribe to (giving access to news4vip and some kind of rudimentary archives access, plus other stuff).

Their database was hacked and all the personal information of their subscribers (credit card data, names, address, mail, everything) was leaked, affecting over 100k accounts in all iirc. It also effectively deanonimized tripcode users.

In no particular order after that:
- shit ton of scandals and lawsuits as real names begin to be connected to 2ch posts
- confirmation that matome blogs were actually manufacturing news by making posts themselves
- revelation that 2ch is actually tracking full user data beyond just IP logs
- probably other stuff I forget

As you can imagine it didn't go over too well.

As far as hiro goes, it's best to keep your expectations low. He's a flake at his very core.

The 2013 leak could have been easily avoided by just switching to a reliable third party payment provider; it wasn't easy back when it was first introduced but that had long changed. Hiro just didn't bother. I remember from way the fuck back when 2ch almost died because its server code was complete shit and the users themselves had to fix it.

Hiro has always been like this. He doesn't always make the greatest decisions, he's not the nicest guy, but he's not malicious most of the time either. He's just bound to fuck up at some point.

For example moot is a gigantic faggot, but he was in a tough spot as well. I know people even now who want to make him personally responsible for everything that was ever related to 4chan. This was why I could never follow twitter consistently. It always ended up being the same couple of people who post regularly and I miss all the announcements anyways. They need some kind of better ranking like FB or something.
