Just wish I had more money and time to travel throughout Japan.

Sure, post some pics. Let's see some girls.

>>15872010
I recommend Kyushu. I had a great time there. If you have any friends that can drive, you can end up saving a bunch of money doing road trips, splitting the costs, and staying in cheap places.

That is the only place (outside of Tokyo) that I have had a chance to go. Have in-laws there. They live in a really inaka place and it was pretty cool.

I just got back from Japan today and I already miss it.

This thread is making me google Japanese real estate. Am I blind or stupid or can you really buy apartments for just a few million yen?
>>
>>15872021
Last year, I went all around Kyushu. Saga and Kagoshima were amazing. I have relatives in Hiroshima I want to go see, but haven't had the chance yet.

>>15872024
Looks like it says "Strang To Say" from the video I have. I have to admit, I wasn't really looking at the skirt.
>>
>>15872038

Oh, so it's THAT kind of video.

I love the Engrish here. I always find myself rudely staring at bags or boobs trying to read people's terrible English.
>>
>>15872104
Yeah, it's pretty bad. Everyone always wants to speak English. Especially the taxi drivers.

When I was in Kyushu I saw a bunch of bags from a local store that basically said "I want you now. I want to do it." all over it.
>>
>>15872029
landlords usually charge gaijin extra
>>
>>15872029
>>15872152
Yeah, it's incredibly hard to get an apt as a gaijin. I'm currently in a tower mansion in a pretty nice area, and I had to pull some serious tricks in order to live here. Just having money isn't enough to get you into places.

The nicer the place, the more they research too. You have to be well known, or be employed a well known company. The general rule of thumb is that your yearly income has to be 1000man or higher to live in a relatively new Tokyo tower mansion.
>>
>>15872152

I have not seen that anywhere.

But I have heard of landlords forcing gaijin to pay for a few months upfront.

Getting a loan to buy a house is ridiculously hard for a gaijin.

No it's not.
>>
>>15875154
Cheap places are simple. There are gaijin apartment complexes too. But if you want to live in a decent place with normal Japanese people it's pretty difficult. I just went through the process myself. Then again this is Tokyo. It's possible it's simpler elsewhere.

One day, when I have the money. But I dont want to just be a tourist, I want to stay over there for a while which I dont know how works
>>
>>15884194
How long do you mean by a while?
On a visitors permit you can stay for three months which you could spend mostly in cheap accommodation like hostels.

If you want to stay longer you're going to need a visa which requires effort to get. I would suggest coming over at least once on a visitors permit before looking at getting a visa to stay longer. You have no idea how you will actually find the place until you come here.
>>
>>15884194

Go take an intensive language course.

Many universities have year long programs.

I did that after I graduated college. Decided I liked it, got a recomendation to their graduate school, and am now studying for my doctoral degree.
>>
>>15884034
That's cool. How did you find translating as a job? I've heard a lot of people get frustrated with Japanese companies preferring Japanese translators to foreign ones. Did you enjoy it?
>>
>>15884223
How much did that year-long program cost you? I working on an unrelated degree and none of the colleges I'm applying to have a Japanese language program, so I wouldn't mind taking a crash course like that after I finish.
>>
>>15884629

I think it was around $2.5k a semester. There are cheaper and more expensive programs too.

I ended up getting a scholarship after my first semester because my grades were good.

They throw money at you pretty much. I get $1.5k a month and my full tuition covered right now. Plus I work as a TA at $25 an hour.
>>
>>15884643

I never thought about this, I am currently working in the US to save up for a language school next year. Apparently all the language schools fill up quick so I have to wait next year to apply.
Would it be cheaper to just go to a real university? Language schools seem to be all people talk about.
I plan on continuing education in Japan after a 1-2 year intensive course.

That is what I did. Two years at a universities intensive language program, then went on to grad school. Te intensive language school I went to was ran by a university. If you do real well they give you a recomendation to enter their university. Wasnt my original plan, but it has worked out okay.

There are a few English language undergraduate programs in Japan too. While in the program you can also take the intensive language courses. But if you already have your undergraduate degree, this is a waste of time.
>>
>>15891788
For what it's worth, depending on where you're from, the Japanese government gives out really good scholarship plans at the undergraduate level, including time taken to study the language (usually 1 year intensive before the degree itself).

Not the original anon asking, but I'm currently a second year university student. I was thinking of going to Japan in the next year or two, but I'm not sure if it would be worth doing a summer program or just going by myself. I'm a little reluctant about a summer program because I feel like I would have to be in a city most of the time instead of being able to explore. Any advice?
>>
>>15894381
Go to Japan first over summer vacation for a few months to see if it fits you. Japan, honestly, is a poor fit for most Westerners, and people on this board really like to feed that dream.
>>
>>15893170
I think there are some programmes at the postgraduate level as well, but fewer as compared to undergraduate level. If they're not within your area of interest, and/or your previous degree isn't exactly directly related to them, it might be more difficult to get in. Also, a lot less are taught in English, if I recall correctly (as compared to undergraduate courses).

>>15894381
Cities have their own charm, depending on where you end up, and can take a while to explore. That said, >>15895029 is probably right, so keep that in mind as well.

I've only been here for a year and a half, so no 永住権 yet, and I'm only on 600万 (it should go up by the end of the year, not sure by how much though)

I wouldn't be going for a Tokyo tower mansion right away though, my work is close to Nanbokusen so maybe I'd look near Saitama. My goal is to "work my way up" in apartment quality, so I just want to stop having to pay rent money asap.

I think I'm not smart enough to get into postgraduate in the area that my undergraduate is in, I'm having enough trouble with it now. I have to say though the Asian studies classes I took were very interesting and I did well in both of them, but I hear trying to do postgraduate for some field you dont have an undergraduate degree in is near impossible.

Doing American Studies right now. It is actually a sort of interdisciplinary program. My advisor is a History major. Some of the other professors are anthropology, it is a real big mix.

At the University I chose, I could have done American Studies or Global Studies, but not Asian Studies. Asian studies program required too high of a Japanese level. I am only JLPT N2.

I would guess it's at least partially due to how much the gaming industry has grown. With today's powerful systems and microtechnology there isn't as much arcades can do that personal systems can't, and some that personal systems can and arcades can't.

Also there sure are a lot of neko around in these pictures. How common are cats over there really? How many of them are strays and how many have owners?

Unless you are good at languages, if you are starging from scratch you will need a year or two to learn enough to use it for a career.

A foreigner not speaking Japanese can find a job in Japan, but it becomes 1000x easier if you can do it and it well.

I know some basic Japanese from self study, enough to read some simple SOL manga and that sort of stuff but I still really suck. I was under the impression that unless you're working at an English speaking branch foreigners can't really get jobs that aren't directly related to language at least in some way, even if they are skilled.
>>
>>15918746

Depends on the com0any really.

I ended up stopping my job hunting to go to grad school, but when I was talking to my career counseler he stated quite a lot of companies are hiring foreigners who can't speak Japanese. It is a lot harder to find a job, but certainly not impossible.

The waterfall shower wasn't as great as I thought it would be; I hiked up to the top of it and it's just mesh holding the land together and a log that has the water flowing down it.

That being said, still a wonderful spot. I didn't know it was called the Philosopher's Path though.

Do shrines really encourage gaijin?

I kind of expected that to be one of the things they wouldn't want tourists at outside of a few in hotspots.

In Tokyo many shrines have these 'how to worship' signs, but they are told not to bother the people that 'work' there most of the time.

Religion isn't the same there.

Some buddhist sects used to exclude foreigners, but they really can't anymore with international marriages.

Besides, why would you want to stop people from giving you money to pray?

Checking in as a rare visitor to 4chan. I did almost 3 weeks in Japan, slow travel (5th trip maybe?). It's as every bit as beautiful as the photos show. Comfy to get around if you know decent Japanese, and there are great small neighbourhoods to explore and make friends in. Easy to meet people at meetups too.

Miss it and wish I had a good reason to go live there. Fuck.

In the town library of a picturesque old town called Hida-Furukawa, they set up a Kimi no Na Wa corner. (The library and town feature in the film.) Visitors coming to visit because of the film write messages there.

After wandering into the library and seeing the posters, I had to go watch the film in Shinjuku. It's entrancing and sends you into thoughts about why life and love can't be like that for you too. ;_____;

Forming /p/haggot here

Unless you're willing to shell out money for lenses, any high end point & shoot will be fine. I personally really like some of the waterproof ones. To get the most out of you're photos you're going want something than can some RAW or a Canon so you can install the CHDK on it. Think somewhere around $300.

If money is no object, grab a DSLR and have fun with it.I personally find them to be bulky, but the quality is going to be better than any point and shoot. Brand doesn't really matter for the most part. Range would be something like $500+ new.

You could also buy a film camera - many of the ones I own are older than me and still work great, are built like tanks, and smaller than an entry-level DSLR. The up-front cost of the camera is easily the cheapest - I got a Canon FTB for $25 that works perfectly - but film will cost you in the long run, especially if you buy the better stuff. Film is way more forgiving than digital when it comes to fudging exposure, and post-processing isn't as vital.

There's nothing quite like the streets of a lively shitamachi neighborhood. A hundred different restaurants and bars to experience, each with its own character and theme. Far more intimate and cosy than the crowded, impersonal streets of Shinjuku and Shibuya.

I think I fell in love with these places this trip. Now I grasp why characters in Japanese shows always talk about their beloved "machi".

Pic is of Asagaya, near Shinjuku, Tokyo. Besides the izakaya dining, the neighborhood is also known for being a little anime haven. Check it out if you visit Shinjuku.

I agree with the /p/haggot

But I would also say that a mirrorless camera is well worth taking a look at.

Something like the a6000 or X-T1 can be had relatively cheap and will take DSLR quality pictures.
>>
>>15989084
I'd go with the Fuji if i could get it cheap enough. I've had some shitty experiences with Sony cameras. Sony make a GODTIER sensor, that even Nikon uses, but has shitty software to run it. Sony cant make decent software to save itself.

that Sony is damn good, but the Fuji is better, and more weather resistant (not proof, nothing is truly weather proof).
>>
>>15989349

Some of Sony's old mirrorless cameras had terrible software, but it hasn't been an issue since they rebranded their mirrorless to the Alpha line. Right now the one with more software issues is the Fuji since it lacks proper raw support in most programs. Lightroom can open them, but not properly, you lose out on the advantages the x-trans sensor gives you.

Comparing these two, the a6000 beats out the X-T1. Considerably cheaper, has a better sensor, and autofocuses much faster. You miss out on weather resistance, but if that is really important to you, you should probably be looking at Pentax.

If money isn't an issue though, the Fuji X-T2 is definatelly the way to go(at least until we see how the a6500 is when released). It has some of the fastest autofocus of any mirrorless, and a great sensor. An X-T2 with the kit lens and a pancake prime would be a fantastic travel kit.
>>
>>15986716
I'm not. It's a serious issue and I want to know why photography is not allowed.

>>

Two reasons off the top of my head.

Don't want their 400+ year old artifacts damaged by flash photography.

And not waning sacred places of worship turned into selfy hotspots.
>>
>>15990269

Yes.

It is easier to work witg raws then export as png then to flat out convert. You keep your original raw files that way.

You don't lose part of the image data like you would converting all your raws too.

No clue. I assume prolonged exposure to bright lights isn't a good thing.

But why find out the hard way?

It can, yes, especially anything painted. A lot of older pigments aren't lightfast and continued exposure to light will degrade them.
