Basically it was something like a Galapagos island for mobile phones: they had the absolute tecnological superiority till 2007~ , when iPhone began to invade the market. Old keitai feature phones had mail, a text-only web browser, a lot of games (that's where the mobage craze is from) like a Persona 3 spinoff centered on Aigis, IR sensors etc.

Galapagos syndrome. Japanese phones evolved in a different path from the rest of the world.

Now most of the young people use smart phones, but the flip phones are still widely used by grampas and salary-men.

It's a shame, now they just use iPhones.

Most Japanese smartphones I've seen aren't very good and they usually run very outdated Android versions. I think the most interesting thing about them nowadays are Sharp's almost bezel-less phones. Freetel also makes decent phones, but are really indistinguishable from Chinese brands.

I think even Samsung makes better flip phones now. Truly a pity.

The LG Lollipop from 2010 is the cutest phone ever sold. Want to get one but the price is not worth it for such an old and outdated phone.

A really cute phone running Android is the LG Ice Cream, but is a Korean phone. Pic related.

Other cute flip phones are the Samsung Nori, Motorola Gleam and the Motorola RAZR. Took bad none run Android and are old and discontinued.

A cute smartphone is the Korean LG AKA.

Lg released several cute Lollipop flip phones phones, the last one was released only in Korea.

The DLite is the cutest though, but the price is pretty inflated, maybe because it is so cute. This phone doesn't even have 3 mm jack for headphones, it has one that looks like a charger plug for headphones .

found a lollipop on craigslist about 2-3 years ago, my favorite phone i've owned by far. it turned me into a t9 monster.

I had a lollipop back in 2011 (known as the D-Lite under T-Mobile). I loved it. I used to get compliments on the animated lights on the outside. Retired it for a smartphone in 2013. I'd post a photo but it's at someone else's house because they cracked their screen really bad and needed to borrow a phone (another reason why smartphones are terrible at the moment until they can invest in sturdier glass).

Consider 3G internet on flip phones has been a thing since the mid 90s in Japan, it makes the main interest factor as it was in the west for smartphones that you could use the internet too. Well that was nothing new in Japan so it took apps and other smartphone only technologies to become something to be desired. if you think about it that way it makes sense why older people still use flip phones and they didn't really get traction until almost all younger people decided to go smartphones instead of flip phones. you can still put your charms on whatever but nobody does that shit anymore
