There was a thread a couple months ago.
It's alright in small doses, but as a whole I just don't enjoy the style myself. I blame over-exposure to Candid Camera when I was a kid.

I use to watch most of Downtown's early stuff. Now I just watch the New Year's batsu.

Hell yeah I do. Just recently re-watched most of the batsu games and the kiki series. Its good stuff.
Part of me is kind of sad how old they are now, the batsu games get easier and easier on them by the year, but they are still good fun.
>>
>>15781131
I'm thinking most of the batsu games are scripted
>>
>>15780748
I love the KiKi series.
>>
I think it's great, you don't really see variety shows or comic duos like this in the UK anymore, which is a pity. I enjoyed the latest segment, meeting without phones, it's a gentler pace but still funny.

It's a pity Matsumoto hates Hamada, ego and insecurity ruins an otherwise brilliant partnership.
>>
>>15782329
>It's a pity Matsumoto hates Hamada

I only heard that they refused to talk to each other outside of shows but I thought it's some form of extreme professionalism.
I mean, what you said is not entirely true, right?
>>
>>15782360
Nobody really knows because they rarely talk about it. But in a NHK documentary, Matsumoto briefly let slip that he does not like Hamada, they do not even talk to eachother backstage, whether in prep or in planning meetings. I remember reading somewhere that Matsumoto had his own sketch show and the producers once invited Hamada on as a guest and Matsumoto hated it.

It seems to be going beyond extreme professionalism. In the UK, I know the old Top Gear trio rarely meet eachother outside work, the reason they cite being that they see eachother so much during work, they have little need to see eachother outside work. Having said that, they have at least been to eachother's houses and met their families unlike Downtown. Downtown started off as friends and partners, something is a bit wrong if you never met your friend's child or even not know their mobile number.

I think it's because Matsumoto is insecure. He is supposed to be the clown, yet Hamada is the one often praised as being the funny one. Plus Matsumoto seems to have a bit of an ego, though all celebs do. But Matsumoto clearly does like being centre of attention, which suits his role as clown just fine, but I think that also causes friction with his partner. This may be why he does a lot of solo projects, to prove himself as well as get all the praise.
>>
>>15782497
I like Matsumoto much more than Hamada. He's good at wisecrack jokes while Hamada relies more on his asshole personae.

I hope it's not that severe and Hamada doesn't feel the same.
>>
>>15782497
>yet Hamada is the one often praised as being the funny one
By who? I've seen all the batsu games and none of them make me laugh like Matsumoto.
>>
Personal preference but their older stuff is much more funny, they feel more natural and just generally fuck around.
>>
>>15782526
Funny how the roles are changing in recent years. Hamada is much more mellow now and Matsumoto's ego is inflating by the day.
>>
>>15782497
I was always under the impression that the opposite was true. Hamada was seen as the controlling egomaniac backstage.

If Matsumoto didn't want him on his show, I think it's just because Gaki is Gaki, Downtown is Downtown and Matsumoto's thing is his thing. He doesn't want Downtown to overshadow his separate projects.

There was also seemingly an issue of pay. For a while Hamada was getting paid the most for his contribution to Downtown/Gaki. Though they joke about it on the show, it probably caused friction.

I wouldn't say they're friends anymore. I wouldn't even say they like each other, but hate is a strong word. They at least still have some affinity and care for each other. Like, I forget who, but one called the other a couple years ago when they were injured or sick or something to check up.

Like your Top Gear example, I just think their friendship changed after working and spending so much time together, that's all. And if it hadn't, they probably would've broken up a long time ago.
>>
>>15782329
>It's a pity Matsumoto hates Hamada, ego and insecurity ruins an otherwise brilliant partnership.
Come to think of it, what is Endou's and Tanaka's partnership like? Also I got the impression that Hamada and Endou are getting along well recently.
>>

I've heard both of these. Sounds like both have egos getting in the way of friendship, sad really.

>>15783762
>what is Endou's and Tanaka's partnership like?
Their families at least know eachother. Judging by Endo's reaction to Tanaka's son's letter in the airport batsu, they seem to be close still.

>Hamada and Endou are getting along well recently
I remember it being mentioned in some show that they go out drinking together and Matsu and Yamasaki pair up as well.

Batsu game wise? I think most would agree the High School one is a great introduction.

>>15782897
It really is quite funny. Matsumoto even comments on it from time to time, how it seems to him that Hamada wants to be the boke. He's doing a good job at that, incidentally, thanks to his onset senility creating so many gags.

>>15782497
All things considered it's clear there's still love there, even if they don't admit it or even directly contradict it. Their body language is that of total comfort, in episodes when the two get buzzed it seems almost as if they're a couple. Matsumoto has said he hopes to die before Hamada so as not to have to be at the funeral of his partner, & they've basically agreed that if one should wish to stop doing comedy the other would follow suit.

>>15783762
Endo & Tanaka are still buds, though the former has gotten to be super close with Hamada in recent years. They go out drinking, play golf, etc. You can see it in the shows too, there's a lot of skinship between them. Hamada often reaches out toward him in various ways & laughs at his moments generously.

Try watching the series where Downtown goes drinking with Sakagami and talk to all sorts of celebrities (which was originally a single special, but after the new show in the same slot, Downtown Nau (show about borderline taboo subjects as a live-airing talk show), flopped they reverted to the old format of that drinking special). It's pretty obvious that Hamada's private life is really secluded and when he isn't in the MC position about the only thing he can does is very obvious tsukkomi with harsh words and smacking (infact, even on Gaki, Matsumoto is doing the most tsukkomi nowadays). He even admitted himself that he trusts no one and doesn't spend time with kouhai like most geinin do (including Matsumoto).

Here's a post about the original special (that focuses more on Downtown) with DL link and some translation.

>Hamada didn't give any names and when strongly inquired who does he really trust, he answered "No one".
Unsurprising for someone who has betrayed trust. Maybe that's why he's such good friends with Endo, both have committed adultery.

>However, he (Matsumoto) denied respecting him (Hamada) in any way, especially as a human being.
Was this said in jest or was it his true feelings?
>>
>>15788655
It was on camera so take that as you will.

Back when Hamada's affair came to light Matsumoto was the only one who kept bringing it up with jokes on shows like Wide na Show, saying that making fun of it was a "friendly" thing to do as opposed to everyone and their mother in the industry trying to make everyone forget about it (especially after Natsumi's damage control attempts) to keep his reputation, kind of like how Jinnai Tomonori's divorce has become his running gag.
>>

It's on right now. Looks like tonight is about keeping a funny face in various situations.

The new stuff is definitely a lot more gentle than their early stuff, I guess due to their age. But it's still very enjoyable, certainly nice and comfy for a Sunday afternoon show in the West.

Yoiko is more well known than 99% of other kombi in the west thanks to Arino and GCCX.

My favorite less-known kombi is Nagareboshi. Their manzai has lots of random ippatsu gags, but the plots are really unique (most famous ones being "Hijigamisama" and "Tsundere"), they often have game and anime references, and their solo show's meta skits featuring gags and characters from other skits are really glorious.
>>
What are your least favorite Gaki moments?

For me, it's almost hilariously sad how they had to tone down tossing stuff out in the Kiki series. It went from forcefully tossing stuff in the trash, to carefully placing it in, to carefully placing it in with a text disclaimer saying they're only throwing out empty containers.

Also, the little boys thing from the 24-hour tag batsu game offended my delicate American sensibilities.

Batsu games have become boring

However they still have fun episodes every now.
This year I think these episodes were good.
I think you might like this item
Testing bonds without phones 1,2 and 3
Hamada's birthday party
Absolutely tasty Okonomiyaki
Kiki Tomato Juice
Endo Verification

Last year there was an episode about Hamada's trip to Enoshima, then they took random shit he said while they were filming him and turned them into "wise sayings" that one was really good.

>>
Anyone know why they randomly blur things out in gaki, particularly signs and badges?

I've noticed it quite a few times on their kiki show, where they would randomly blur the intro sign or the stars on their waistcoat. I've noticed the same in the NY specials as well. It's not like they are blurring product brands or people's faces for privacy, they are just blurring random props.
>>
>>15810425
Copyright/trademark concerns.
Some companies don't want their brand to be featured in any sort of media they might not like or agree with, or in any for profit publication.
>>
>>15810450
But as I said, they were not blurring any product, they just randomly blur props on the set for no apparent reason.

Here's an example from the crisps one I rewatched recently. I can understand in this example that they would try to divert attention to the text, but it still seems like an odd choice of blurring. And other times I noticed it don't seem to be blurring for any obvious purpose.

I remember first noticing it on the airport special, for some reason they blurred the logo on Yamasaki's uniform during one of the desk segments. It only lasted for a few seconds before going back to normal. Weird.
>>
>>15810654
Does this occur on the raws as well?
It could very well be some automated blur application to throw off youtube or whoever's copyrighted material detection.

Most shows do that during sponsor introduction parts where the sponsor names are on middle with big white logos and the sides have some sort of preview/outro message. It's probably done because the sponsors don't want people to focus on background things, but ironically the sudden blots of mosaic gets your attention about thousand times more effectively which really makes me question the practice.

You actually believe this kayfabe shit don't you, pig?

I used to love the new year's batsu. The earliest ones are the best. The Hotel one is the last I really enjoyed, from Spy and onward it's really just the same shit year after year.

I wish there were more of the weekly shows translated. They are old, but I still enjoy their stuff.
>>
>>15830163
I think the detective one is a good return to form.

>I wish there were more of the weekly shows translated.
The problem with the weekly show is it is very hit and miss. Last Sunday was meh because it was just about dressing up some flavour-of-the-month twink (>>15826787), but the week before was entertaining (>>15815339).

But if you are looking for stuff where their shows and games were more physical, especially the punishments, then you are going to be disappointed. Those days are long gone. The youngest of them is in their late 40s after all, there's only so much punishment they can take now.

They're doing this so that if you're watching the intro/outro as a preview (or I guess the intro as an intro), you can't tell the outcome of certain things.
>>
>>15834067
That's a completely different thing from >>15817033. The stars on their outfits are results of past Kiki episodes and the intro sign is literally the title of that episode which you could read in any program list.

When they do it for spoiler preventation, the mosaic is even more apparent (blocky as opposed to smudgy), often with colored and/or outlined boxes and question marks, most common example being when someone tries out a new funny outfit in the middle of a show.

Eh doesn't seem like that big of a deal for people who don't speak Japanese or know anything about Japanese retail stores like myself. >>
>>15849475
y-you don't have to be mean...

>>15849478
I can't recall any obvious errors, unless you mean translation errors which of course I would miss. But when compared to recent Japanese subbed stuff I watched that was so poorly subbed it made me want to rip my dick off the subs for the batsu games come out looking like fucking gold.
>>
>>15849448
>>15849489
If the translators can't read katakana or look up words they don't know, they shouldn't be the ones doing the translation.

Also "it's not bad if I don't notice it's bad" is a terrible argument. The last one I watched with subs few years ago had everyone repeating "pissing" as in "being/getting angry" in their lines and even though I'm not a native English speaker, I'm pretty sure there's many other synonyms for getting angry.

Most Japanese comedy is based on either puns or references to pop culture. Only the dumber visual gag stuff is really accessible to a foreign audience.

That's why I appreciate the kiki series a bit more because it looks like your typical jp game show. To be fair, they wold have the same reaction with western content if they're into it. I'm not entirely sure why No Laughing High School stands out from the rest of the NL series.

The only references I would possibly laugh at in the N.L series are the ones when they play western music while they try to make the gang laugh. But if there's one gag I do like in the series that's not from the west is the "Itao's wife" gag.

The "don't get aroused" episode was also great And I'm not just saying that because I found Itao's wife attractive in it

Absolutely Tasty is one of my favorites, the problem with that is there's no western "personalities" that just hang out and do stuff. It wouldn't be as funny if you just picked random people off the street to do it. Shit, they tried to do Silent Library in the west and it was fucking awful.
They all have specific roles, even talk show hosts. The closest you could probably get is talk show hosts bringing random celebrities on to do silly things and its just not the same.

It's why Top Gear was so popular in bongland, it was a group of guys you got to know just hanging out doing whatever and having fun with no real strict goal aside from it being mostly topical with the show (car related).

Would you really keep watching Gaki if they just replaced Downtown and the rest with some random people like a game show?
>>

>the problem with that is there's no western "personalities" that just hang out and do stuff. It wouldn't be as funny if you just picked random people off the street to do it. Shit, they tried to do Silent Library in the west and it was fucking awful.

Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about. I was looking up what the gaki gang think of western fans yesterday, and apparently, I stumbled on a reddit thread saying they westernized Silent Library. According to some sources, it only lated a few years before it gotten canned.

I'm not remotely surprised because MTV make awful shows. You can't just westernize jp comedy thinking it would stick here, we have different cultures and they tried too hard. Shows like Ninja Warrior became popular because it was original, and Spike TV knew how to entertain western folks back in 2007.
>>
>>15863189
>>15863281
I remember Silent Library. It was funnier seeing the stuff they came up with rather than the people reacting to it, it generally reminded me of people who would be whispering and laughing in the library when I'm trying to do research. Which is the point of the show, yes, but they were doing it too well, you could say.

I also remember it was the first place I had heard of Justin Bieber.

Sorry but you're wrong.

>It's a pity Matsumoto hates Hamada
He never ever said or implied that. He is uncomfortable with them both being alone and they pretty much have a working relationship only, but he never said that.

>I remember reading somewhere that Matsumoto had his own sketch show and the producers once invited Hamada on as a guest and Matsumoto hated it.
Again, he was uncomfortable with doing a sketch with Hamada alone, and kinda pissed at the idea itself but because it was supposed to be him performing alone, but the people at NHK thought it would attract more viewers if they added Hamada into one of the sketches.

>I think it's because Matsumoto is insecure. He is supposed to be the clown, yet Hamada is the one often praised as being the funny one.
Matsumoto is the one called by everyone the "king of comedy". Hamada was considered better than him in their early days.

>But Matsumoto clearly does like being centre of attention, which suits his role as clown just fine, but I think that also causes friction with his partner. This may be why he does a lot of solo projects, to prove himself as well as get all the praise.
The thing is, as they evolved into their careers, they stopped being stand up comedians and branched. Hamada became more used and comfortable with being a host, as you can see how comfortable he always is in that role, while Matsumoto evolved in the Beat Takeshi way, being more artistic or in a comedy actor way of sorts. He does those projects because that's what he likes to do. He was never into hosting shows and interviewing musicians and actors. That's Hamada's role.

One thing is for sure. You can see they respect each other a lot even though they are not friends. They are just coworkers but you can see Matsumoto is clearly more awkward with Hamada then the opposite.
>>
>>15788490
>Matsumoto is doing the most tsukkomi nowadays
I've noticed this some years ago. Now this is one of the saddest things to the duo. It renders Hamada nearly useless. They have to force his "character" on some episodes (like the "nayanen" challenge)
>>
>>
To the anons talking about Hamada and Matsumoto's relationship :

I was told by a friend that Hamada was part of a large religion in Japan (That seems creepy to Japanese people.) that would make him off putting to Matsumoto. Why they had a distance between them.
Example of Hamada's behaviour would be that he would have his driver stop the vehicle when they were within (viewing distance?) of the Imperial Palace, get out and bow to it. Which seems kind of odd or creepy to regular Japanese.
Many people supposedly had this weird feeling towards that religion.

Matsumoto eventually joined that religion not too terribly long ago now. Most people noted that he changed in how he presented himself. Wearing tight or flashy clothing becoming muscular etc.

This is all what a friend and fan of Downtown and I discussed. She showed me lots of articles and pictures sometime ago.

It is just a once-in-a-while heart-warming episode that doesn't really aim to be funny.

It's not meant to be.
But it's a damn nice one to have every now and then, like >>15962600 said.

The Hamada Nanyanen knockout episode was one of the unfunniest things I've ever seen.

That ending though.

Kiki Melonpan this Sunday!

>>15788769

I imagine a lot of people don't say shit about Hamada due to him being their senpai and a big figure in the industry. Matsumoto doesn't need to hold his punches, since he's at least on the same level.
>>
Anyone have a link to any older videos where Hosei was super handsome?
I stumbled on an episode on youtube a couple months back and I was blown away at how different he used to look.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nlk5jhj8zkE

Endo got skinny. Also he freaks out in the beginning, when the girl tells him he looks good, thinking it's a trap for batsu game.
>>
>>15976673
Damn, way to go Endo. It fits him, you know.
Thinking about it now, I think Matsumoto dying his hair was a way to help change not only his looks but along with the physique, to bring out a "new Matsumoto". That kind of behavior fits him, like when he first shaved his hair and all, thinking he was a new version of himself.
That's a big problem in Japan, I think. People like to place labels on some celebrities like "god of this" or "king of that" and the celebs themselves end up buying it.
Like that actor who thought he was so fucking godlike that he could resist the poison from blowfish.

That one's pretty old.
Never found out which episode this is from but Matsumoto lost something an his batsu game was every time he said "Ah!" or reacted pretty much 500,000 yen was docked from his pay.
>>
>>15978207
Matsumoto & Nakai vs NTV, a series of live shows during 2002-2003.

NTV put up Matsumoto and Nakai Masahiro, of SMAP, in a challenge with 10 million yen on the line. The money is subtracted by 500k yen every time the two say "AH!" during the challenge. They ended up minus 17 millions. NTV later setup the next live show as a batsu game for the two for 700k yen they "owed".

Older top-tier comedians are still holding their positions in the business very tightly younger comedians are just graceful to be able to keep working around them. There are shit loads of comedians trying to get their 15 minutes to barely make a living.

There's an archive with all the episodes (RAW).

I don't know about full episodes but there's a bunch of subbed sketches online. This YT account has a lot of them.

To be honest those sketches are probably my favorite thing they've done. Witty, clever and absurd to no end.

>>15999579
I kind of wish we would've gotten to see one Batsu game with the cast from Gottsu. They had good chemistry, it would've been pretty interesting.
>>
>>16000616
Well, they all went their different ways after that. Kinda like what happens with the crew of Saturday Night Live.
Ryoko went the modeling way, and tried some singing:

This is from last year:
https://youtu.be/oMGz1EN6o3E
Not bad for a 43 year old, huh?

YOU did some movies, some fashion stuff, some TV stuff, nothing too special.

As for the guys, most of them got big gigs either hosting programs or being regulars on other ones.

Something tells me that the only one with a good relationship with both members of Downtown is Itao.
Not really sure why, but I don't think Matsumoto is well liked by other comedians. Specially by the ones from the show, since he caused Gottsu ee Kanji to be canceled practically by himself.
>>
>>16001186
Damn, Ryoko still has it.

>Specially by the ones from the show, since he caused Gottsu ee Kanji to be canceled practically by himself.

"Gottsu Ee Kanji" was a popular skits show that Matsumoto was involved in early 90's. When Matsumoto says, "An incident of Gottsu Ee Kanji," he means of how his relationship with Fuji television, who used to air an aforementioned show, has turned sour after the Fuji television decided to air a baseball play-off game over "Gottsu Ee Kanji-Special Edition" that Matsumoto was obviously heavily involved in. It is said that Matsumoto was not notified of their decision until the very last minute, and that pissed him off enough to boycott to appear on Fuji-related shows afterward.

How entitled can one be?
>>
>>16002916

The show was alreay getting unpopular at the time (which isn't uncommon for a show that airs for 5+ years), one reason given that audiences couldn't get Matsumoto's more surreal stuff. Matsumoto also said he was sick of his comedy getting overanalyzed after he released his first book where he talked about it in great detail. I wouldn't be surprised if he used the incident just as an excuse to end the show.

>>16008137
