The capital-C dietary "Calorie" used in the US is actually 1000 chemical calories, or one kilocalorie. Most other nations, as far as I know, use the kcal notation.
>>

Whenever I go to Japan I always go to random bar and ask for chicken yakitori and eat it with rice.

All my trips to japan have been a short one (less than 3 days) so I really haven't had the time to go to every places and thy them dishes
>>
So, how much better is the sushi in japan than the sushi at my local asian market?
>>
>>15780657
Wait, 773 is small? I try to limit myself to 1,200.

I want to see my dick again.
>>
>>15781173
I can't compare because I never been to Nipponland but I had sushi made by actual Japanese people. It's much fresher and flavorful. I don't know what they do but their tamago as well taste fucking magnificent.
>>
>>15780626
White rice has a lot of calories, and most food in a convenience store obento is fried.

>>15780033
A "bento" isn't a food. It's just a lunchbox-styled meal with different foods in it.

>>15781173
Real sushi rice is soaked in vinegar and has a very strong taste to it. If you're eating sushi without vinegar, it's not sushi.

>>15781136
You're just paying for grilled chicken with sauce. The sauce is what gives it that flavor, and you can buy it at any grocery store.
>>
>>15781602
>A "bento" isn't a food. It's just a lunchbox-styled meal with different foods in it.
I know, I only just realize how dumb I sounded when I made the post. I should've said something like dish or meal.
>>
>>15781643
Obento isn't a dish or meal, either. It's just the concept of putting a bunch of foods in a box. It's just a "lunchbox" with cultural wrapping. You can put absolutely anything in an obento, so it's not a meal in and of itself.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything.
>>

My favorites are generally the soul-warming dishes such as Chikuzenni and Nikujaga.
>>
>>15782190
Why is chikuzenni so good? Why can I only find them in bentos? I wish I knew how to cook.
>>
>>15782223
Simmered dishes ("-ni") are a piece of cake even for someone with no cooking experience. You just cut up all the veg and meat, throw 'em in a pot with some sauces and let it simmer until it's edible.

For a standard 4 servings of chikuzenni:

400 g chicken
1 carrot
1 burdock root
100 g lotus root
4 shiitake mushrooms
2 green bell peppers
125 g konnyaku

For the sauce:
600 cc dashi
2 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp mirin
5 tbsp soy sauce

Stir fry the meat and veg first to get a nice golden color on them. Add the sauce and cover with a lid. Done!

Please don't push yourself too hard, going for a 500kcals deficit per day is enough to lose 1kg every 2 weeks.
If you don't pace yourself you'll end up sabotaging yourself so please don't do anything too extreme.

Only certain styles (based on city or region) of sushi soak in rice vinegar or soy mixtures. Basically the sushi in Japan always has wasabi between the rice and fish. And is generally of higher quality (freshness due to them being much closer to the sea). Also sushi in Japan is nigiri (ball of rice + fish), not the "american" rolls like rainbow roll, dragon roll, etc. In Japan, you can have tuna maki or cucumber maki however which are simple type of rolls.
>>
>>15780033
I hope you couldn't find better pictures because that looks like crap, then again I guess it's till better than the American crap you have where the food is 90% hormones and antibiotics.
>>
It's rare for me to eat more than one meal a day, so a 773cal meal + assorted snack throughout the day is just fine for me.

Just how fat is the rest of /jp/? Eating is almost always a chore for me unless it's really good comfort food, and even then I don't eat very much.

What? 780kcals for one meal isn't too bad, especially if you're exercising during the day.

Let's say you start the day off with a light breakfast, which is I don't know, 250kcals. When you eat that lunch you're only at 1030kcals and that leaves you with nearly another thousand for the rest of the day, and we're excluding any light exercise here (e.g. 20 minute walk somewhere). If you're the active kind then you'll be having heavier meals. If you have a breakfast that is 600kcals and then the lunch brings you up to 1380kcals, but you burn a lot of it off, you'll still have a lot of room to work with for dinner and snacks.

But even if you don't exercise during the day and eat it, if you watch your fat and sugar intact it still isn't that bad.

>>15788693
I'm pretty slim. Think I average out at 1300kcals and ~15g fat/day (if that) but I haven't been keeping track. I want to start working out and get a bit of muscle, but I'll have to wait until I can afford to buy more food.

kcal is a kilocalorie.
what you may traditional think of as a "calorie" is actually a kilocalorie.
for example, when your doctor says a healthy daily calorie intake is 2000 calories, they really mean kilocalories.

1kcal = 1000cal

>>
>>15788416
No, sushi isn't sushi if it doesn't have sumeshi. That's the entire point of it.

The wasabi preparation is what give sushi its strong taste, but all sushi uses sumeshi aside from very specific exceptions.

So, once again: if there's no vinegar, it's not traditional sushi.

Is there a reason why all Japanese food seems so meat or fish heavy?

Idk shredded cabbage doesn't really count as vegetables.
>>
>>15801270
Meat-heavy Japanese dishes are only commercial food. That, and the food that westerns gravitate towards are those, so that's why you see those posted more often. It's like >>15799790 said.

Japan is heavy on fish because it's an island country with a huge fishing market.

I haven't had my height measured since highschool, but I think I'm around 1,73 - 1,78 and for years my weight's been stuck on the 58 - 63 range, which I think is pretty much an optimal BMI.

I'm slim as all heck and have some slight abdomen muscles. My diet is kinda all over the place, I almost never have breakfast, sometimes don't have lunch, but I snack very liberally. Dinner is pretty sacred though, it's almost always a plate of white rice, beans and meat of my choosing, coupled with a VERY healthy side of green salad, usually in the form of a whole batch of lettuce.

I actually live a pretty sedentary lifestyle, 90% of my day is spent sitting down in front of computers. But because I masturbate a lot (three times a day minimum), don't eat a whole lot and live in a pretty hilly, hot city, I imagine I actually spend a lot of calories a day and end up looking pretty good. I feel blessed by my circumstances.

There is a difference between eating 700 calories from soda and 700 calories from a mix of rice, meat/cheese, and vegetables. Even putting vinegar on plain rice affects how the body deals with it.

The body is not a simple addition and subtraction machine and will produce different responses to the environment.

I had a feeling this thread was going to be a crossboard mess and it looks like I'm not going to eat any humble pie today. What a shame.
Japan's food culture and geography allow and encourage high quality ingredients, but at relatively expensive prices. The result is stuff like Kobe beef or the infamous Yubari melons. Conversely, American produce is bred and even genetically modified for longevity and mass production. It travels great distances- even to other continents.
If I had to pick a Japanese food it would be something simple like onigiri. However, I think the ideal /jp/ food is the "packaged nutritional product" stuff. It's cheap and you can stock up for many weeks at a time, greatly cutting down on necessary forays into the outside world.
>>
>>15812626
>Conversely, American produce is bred and even genetically modified for longevity and mass production. It travels great distances- even to other continents.
We feed starving millions with that produce. We are, quite literally, saviors of the poor. If the MUH GENETICALLY MODIFIED FRUITS faggots had their way millions of people would die all over the planet.
>>
>>15813710
More like you eat it all and get fat while the rest of the world starves.
>>
>>15813748
Nope. But nice try.
>>
>>15813710
And now the world is severely overpopulated and and getting worse because we spread our agricultural practices without pushing the social change that was meant to go with them and so the people who had ten children because half would die before adulthood are still having ten children, who all survuve and have ten children of their own.

I'm so sorry Malthus-san. We should have listened.
