Stop looking at the auctions for other heads. If you continue browsing heads, you'll eventually find one you think is even better, especially after you've had this head for a while and have gotten a bit tired of it.

When you are tired of it, change the eyes, wig and outfit. Do not follow your trigger finger and go looking to buy another head.

Same deal with dresses. Buy a very good/expensive dress to match that head, and just stop browsing yahoo japan auctions. If need be, stop browsing these threads temporarily as well.

Sasara's stuff finally came in! So a few updates on her.

She has three stains on her body somehow, even though I've kept her wrapped in a clean white satin sheet tucked safely away in her carrying case. At least her head is spotless. I'll have to stain treat her eventually.

I really love this wig for her, but I really don't know how to care for it. Any tips on brushing wigs would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to ruin yet another wig through hamfisting my way through tangles.

And last update, she'll be getting a sister soon... That'll be fun.

My vote goes for the DD Base model that isn't Yukino, whatever her name is. I don't like her expression and something about the head's shape makes the neck seem longer than it already is. I don't see very much of her and although it is not the fault of the sculpt, being a standard means she falls into the hands of people who don't know how to flatter her.

Get a metal-toothed brush and a toothbrush. You can get a metal-toothed brush for wigs from a beauty supply shop, online, or if you are cheap get one from a pet store. The kind with metal 'pins' with rounded ends, not the kind that feels like a billion needles.

Get a small travel bottle to fill with water. Sometimes I use a few drops of fabric softener to reduce static.

If there are knots,you mist with water for lubrication then use the metal brush. If you need to just straighten the hair, use a clean toothbrush, softly. Hope that helps.

Backgrounds are hard when you're just taking casual shots of your girl. I've had to just use bed sheets for a background on multiple occasions.

I need to move soon so I can buy a new detolf and store my doll in it. She has been in her box for months now. Though I haven't managed to get the custom eyes I was interested in either so one could say she is just getting prepared.

Backgrounds and framing are still the hardest for me. What I find easier to do is either have my girl interact directly with the background/environment or use a shallow depth of field to make the background indistinguishable.

Here's a older picture, it feels a little off because the camera placement and face that aren't quite lined up properly but I still like it.

Pretty much everything I learned came from other posts on these threads and actual portraiture shoots and tutorials.

Toromi got some time out again today. Tried working on her posing a bit. And if anyone happens to know an answer. After conditioning her hair and what not, I laid her wig flat on a surface to blow dry. Now towards the end of the drying process I was trying to dry out the cap really well, and the bangs kinda stood up on me. Will they eventually lay back down, or did I fuck everything up?

If it was a wig from a LE doll, it is NOT heat resistant.

If you purchased one of the standard volks wigs, they are moderately heat resistant. I have used a flat iron, on the lowest setting, to style a Volks wig and it worked perfectly. DO NOT DO THIS IF IT'S A LIMITED EDITION WIG.

So here's the issue. The bottom end of the wig cap is touching my thumb in this photo, so the cap is being held as if there were a head inside, sans elastic stretch. If you can't tell, the bangs have been lifted away from the body of the wig. I just feel dumb for messing up the original wig the most.

Hmmm OK.

Here's what I would try.

1. Use a mini flat iron on the lowest heat setting. Gently heat the area you want to flatten then quickly hold it down with your hand so it cools the way you want it to lay. A mini flat-iron (they are about the size of a toothpaste tube) can be purchased at places like Sally's or TJ Maxx.

2. Buy some wig spray, spray it on your hands, and use your hands to style the bangs.

3. I'd resort to wig-wax last since you have to wash the wig if you fuck up, but it will also work.

Kuonji Alice has a very similar face. You wouldn't need a custom face-up, the eyes are kinda similar and the DDS semi white body would also fit the character.

The outer body parts wouldn't be too difficult to replicate, even with different materials. The skeleton is the real hurdle, as it takes actual engineering to make it work properly. Even Volks isn't exactly as good as it as they should be at this point considering they're the basically the most popular of only three companies on the market (... which might actually be a detriment to improvement).

It would be interesting to see a budget version and what tricks and shortcuts they'd come up with to make the production cheaper and still make the body look close to the original.

I haven't heard of it. But I have washed one particularly unmanageable wig with a bit of fabric softener before and it did help some. With sheets you'd probably have to apply some water with a spray bottle, just enough moisture to allow it to work. But I doubt it would do any damage, so why not give it a shot.

Well, one reason is style. And just like with everything, it appeals to some and doesn't to others.
Another reason that I could think of is that it hides the wig cap underneath. Depending on size of the cap/wig or shape of the head it is possible that without those bangs it'd be somewhat visible and wouldn't look as nice on photos.

But mostly a lot of people just think it looks cute.

I don't see why it would be necessary unless they were used before and look dirty. Some darker materials will stain, but just washing them wouldn't change the properties of the material (especially if its dark red or blue, black etc.). Plus it may actually damage or deform them. I've gone six times now and have been all over the country. Specifically, I've purchased goods from the Volks shops in Akihabara and Yokohama. If you are worried about people giving you weird looks, definitely stick to Akihabara. You will find that you feel comfortable among the other otaku filth, who are buying their own otaku filth. No one really cares there and you won't really get any looks. The other store was in a somewhat fancier mall and the people around were definitely normals, even in the adjacent anime goods section of the store. You will get some weird looks there, even for just being a foreigner in the doll showroom. I did notice an interesting thing though, most of the customers that came in were decently mannered and well dressed, which surprised me. Luckily I was too. The store clerks were nice and helpful.

1. Conventions. [dollpa/dollshow/I-doll/etc] probably don't need to tell you that some things you just can't get at Manda or on Yahoo, and if you can you're getting scalped hard. Hisyo-hisyo eyes is the prime example, and until this year you could get Ronronshuka heads of the tables here too

2. Dolk. (Tokyo, Nagoya, etc) lots of clothesmakers consign here. If you have a sense for fashion or if the "mass produced" look isn't for you, you need to go here.

3. Azone. I know they're in the low end but unlike Volks their store stock eclipses their international online presence. They also sell VMF50 dolls if that suits your fancy.

Other things to note: Volks stores don't have much in the way of clothes. What's on the pegboards aside from replacement parts is what you can get online direct. However the Akihabara shop has small amounts on consignment (even from cherry milk) and rental cubes as well.

I'm sure the other guy has things to add but those are the most obvious. If you take into account what you spend on shipping and proxies your probably want to travel too.

Dolk seems interesting and I do enjoy putting an outfit together on my own. Combining single pieces from different stores online is difficult because sometimes they don't fit like imagined or are slightly off in color/texture compared to the pictures. So to do that irl would be amazing.

Azone is great. I like their 1/6 scale line best though. And I've seen pictures of the stores and it's always bursting with stuff....

If you want to keep a low profile MDD is the way to go. They're backpack sized and fit along the long edge of carry-on compliant suitcases. I used to worry about searches and weird looks from the X-ray operator but it doesn't bother me anymore.

(I don't know how many times I've seen posts about going to Japan and not knowing why people want to go or what they want to do) to be brief, after typhoon season and before winter kicks in is best if you hate humidity, spring if you like warm weather. Seeing your pictures and journey plans makes me imagine what it would be like to travel with a fellow doll collector and go to stores and conventions together. Probably enabling and a bit more fun than alone. I wish there was anyone within reasonable distance who's into this stuff, but oh well.

Decide on the highest price you're willing to pay and then check the auction like 30 mins before it's supposed to end. If it's already too high then, drop it and move on. It all depends on how much you're willing to shell out. If you're planning on getting a DDP anyway, then maybe wait for Iori/Yayoi, it might be less expensive in the end, if you take into account that you'll get a body too and won't have to wait for Volks to release it separately.

From Japan is an alright proxy, easy to use and reliable. I've had nothing but good experiences with them.

I'm on the same boat. I actually ended up giving an old body I had laying around to a friend of mine hoping we could become doll buddies, but it's been a few months and they still haven't even bought a head for the poor thing. I regret my decision, but it really feels like I'm on the only person around here who's into dolls and I wanted to convert them.

I was there a few months ago and I don't speak any Japanese. The staff was very friendly regardless of me being an ignorant gaijin. The lady in the small 1st floor shop actually took the time to show me to the 2nd floor shop and workshop around the street corner.

It's definitely a shop to check out if you ever go to Tokyo.

It was everything I expected and more. Set out just before 8 and got to Imabari before noon. I was afraid it was going to be "flat with inclines at the bridges" but the "inclines" turned out to be 1-2km 3%+ grade hill climbs. Even if you're not a cyclist I highly recommend it. Riding betwwen two major Japanese islands is an amazing experience and would love to take the longer routes sometime in the future. In other news. Made it to Nagoya. SC Maglev railway museum is bretty neat.

I love lurking in these threads, even though the only thing I've ever been able to afford is a pure neemo Remilia. She is wonderful, but I know it's nothing compared to most of what I see here...

Never seen one irl so I can't comment on the quality really, but it's not like you have much other options in that size

This is simply my personal experience so your results may vary. But I found it impossible to bond emotionally to the small dolls that I have bought. I can't quite pinpoint why but I suppose that because of the small size, they feel more like a somewhat expensive toy than the human female replacement they were meant to be. I've had no problems falling in love with my big girls.

My 1/12 scale dolls have been relegated to playthings for my MSD girls, which is fine. They are still cute things to look at and nice to play with, but I can't look at something that small and see a personality. Just a toy.

So if you're looking for something to replace female interaction, save for the bigger doll and you will not regret it.

I've bought quote a few, do you intend to do a lot of posing? Or will they mostly be on display? My only issue is even though they have joints they're still based on primitive mannequin-like doll bodies. Posing the arms is sometimes annoying because they occasionally pop off and you have to partially undress them to get them back in. Otherwise, yes they're very cute and you're limited only by your imagination.

Well. Can't say I was disappointed in I-doll Nagoya. I had low expectations going in and my expectations were met. Saw some dolls from Twitter and 2chan but the meeting groups were quite small. Hopefully because they're headed to Tokyo. Same from the dealer perspective: a couple good ones but not plentiful to stick around all day for. See you in Tokyo.

I honestly think if you put the 500 down upfront, you wont even really notice when you hit that 1000+ mark. I've had my girl now for three months, and I'm just now starting to break 1000. That will get you probably a base model, stand, case, 2 wigs, an outfit, and a few sets of underwear/socks. Just everything you need to get started really. It's not a lump payment, and you'll be surprised how steadily it starts to rise.

I still take photos from a defunct iPhone, cause no camera, and I use that to process anything I take if I get home to a computer and get things going, so yep.

It's a shame this thread is past the bump limit because I have so much more to share. For now I'll just give the highlights:
Community space for hanging out has been eliminated. When Dollshow was in Hamamatsucho, it was the whole second floor by the Azone. Since moving to Sunshine city It's been replaced by a handful of tables and you're restricted to 30 minutes. The good news is it's free now

Showed Ronronshuka the head I bought last year is doing well. Bought a dress to show more gratitude.

Ran into Taitan and his massive macro rig again. He's such a jovial fellow, chats with each dealer and photographs their display for his blog. everyone should strive to be as friendly as he. We shared a chuckle then he continued on blogging.

Since the event's at Sunshine city food options are now limitless. If you're not interested in being part of the frenzy, There's no better way to kill time than a bite to eat.
