I'm pretty much on the same boat.

Luckily most Japanese media put context over content, so watching anime or playing games in easy, albeit with a lot of guesswork.

No such luck on written literature though.

I can read some low level SOL light novels and stuff though I still have to use a dictionary every few pages. As for actually speaking though, not at all I tried one time talking to myself and it was such a jumbled mess and my pronunciation wasn't lining up with how I hear it in my head.

Trying to learn but I ragequit everytime. Although, it weird that I've suddenly started to understand Japanese sentences from anime and dramas. Guess it wasn't a total waste.

Honestly, I feel like my progress has mostly come to a halt, as all I've been doing is translating the dialogue in my doujinshi, which is rather simplistic except for erratically appearing higher level language. I'll try moving onto novels eventually, so I can acquire more vocabulary...
>>
>>15764751
I just started learning yesterday. Since I'm a NEET now, I have the time for such things. I memorized all the Hiragana yesterday. Today I'll do Katakana and make a start on the Genki textbook.

Most guides preface everything with 'if you don't have a really good reason for learning japanese, you'll probably give up'. But I'm ridiculously obsessive when I study things so I'll never give up!
>>
I'm semi-fluent-ish. I speak enough to have gotten around and communicated in Japan without any problems.
I don't have much time to study Jap anymore, seeing as the semester is getting busier at uni, but I practice pretty often with my Japanese mates from the Japanese society at uni.
My writing has gotten a lot worse through misuse though. I mostly talk on LINE or irl, and I don't really have any time to practice writing
I wish I could pick up a Japanese class at uni just so that I could practice writing more, but my program doesn't let me take any electives from outside the science faculty.
>>
I know how to speak and read but i can't write it

I should be able to since im japanese but i forgot most of it over the years

That is a good idea. Try to read more things with Furigana and learn some Kanji on top of it. It will be helpful in your quest. I have not played a game yet with it in it. But i have watched One Piece and i also have practiced on SRS.

>>15767000
Thats the spirit. I had the same idea a year and a few months back when i started. I can give you an idea where to go next for help. Try using Tae Kim,TheJapanesepage for grammar after you have learned some vocab and Kanji. I would advise using Memrise SRS app it literally has helped me learn Katakana, Hiragana(try to find the Katakana+ Hiragana+ course) Kanji and even Vocab. On top of that its free if you have an account on it. Works on Desktop and Mobile. At least it will get you ready for Japanese. As for Genki i think it is a good guide for showing you how sentences work but it does not help you as much on memorization as Memrise does.

>>15767083
Question since you have gotten around in Japan can you tell me if you can mostly use your phone to buy things in Japan? Even in Restaurants? Do Japanese people speak like they do in Slice Of Life conversations on Manga and Visual Novels? Like conversational level? Sorry to ask so many questions and if i sound dumb but i would really like to know so that way when im prepared to go over in a year i wont be making any embarrassing mistakes. I know how to make basic sentences and that sort of thing but my vocab is low currently(i would guess 500),

>>15767086
I dont think writing is important as much as it use to be. From what i have heard everyone uses cell phones and prepaid cards to pay for things now a days. Actually in the US it is kind of the same thing mostly everyone types or just gives the money to the person.

>>15767103
Just learn Grammar that is how all sentences are formed. Without Grammar you would not know how a sentence is formed. Im sure you know a lot of vocab and Kanji if you know how to read it. The thing that is missing is Grammar which tells you how to do it. Tae Kim is good at that.

>>15767697
What? one year worth of Kanji that is like 200. Or are you meaning you learned all the Kanji in one year?
>>
>>15764751
people keeps getting suprised and even doubting it when i said im a gaijin that never went to japan in chatpad
>>
>>15764751
I've studied Japanese for 6 years, so yeah, I'm kinda fluent at it. Also, being in close proximity to Japan definitely contributes to that
>>
>>15768384
> one year worth of Kanji that is like 200.
That's less than one a day! 遅すぎる!
>>
I can watch most anime raw and understand 95%.

On the other hand, I suck at reading, not simply because I barely know any kanji, but because I'm not used to it. It takes me several times longer to understand a word when I read it than when I hear it, which is the complete opposite of what it's like with every other foreign language I know.
>>
I've been studying for about a year and a half, it takes a while but I can basically read anything I want to with the occasional word look-up.

It's not hard, you just have to put in the hour or so every day.
>>
>>15768384
I've been using wanikani for learning Kanji.

I like it, because it quizzes you every day, and it forces you to maintain a good rhythm.

If you skip a day or two, the algorithm punishes you by piling up a lot of review questions.

I also like it, because it focuses on reading instead of writing which is more practical for gaijin who will probably need to read more than they have to write.

It also speeds the learning process.

It *is* a paid service after you get past the first three levels, but I have found it worth the price.

http://wanikani.com/
>>
My grammar is okay and my vocabulary is essentially non-existent. Every time I look up a word I forget it.

One day I'll put them into flash cards, but not today.

One glaring weakness in my Japanese is my lack of understanding of keigo.

It makes dealing with super polite service workers (like waiters at restaurants) very difficult for me.

I know conversational Japanese, but the super-polite stuff is a mystery to me.
>>
>>15768858
Wanikani i have not tried it but i do think about giving it a shot because actually although i do have 900 Kanji and 500 vocab as i mentioned earlier under my belt. But Memrise does the same thing except its free. I get daily reminders and scores for doing well.

>>15768854
Thats what i do. 40 minutes a day. Vocab, Kanji, and although i neglect it sometimes i do practice Grammar.
>>
>>15768858
You're literally wasting your time and money on a proprietary piece of bullshit that not only teaches you far slower than the method it's copying, but allows for zero flexibility. If I want to study 20 extra words today, I can. If I want to add totally new words to my review pile from something I've read, instead of following a retarded outline of newspaper words, I can.

And what's more, I can do all of it, for free, on any device I own, on or offline. The funny thing is, even after you've "finished" it, you'll still need to do your reviews, which means you'll need to keep paying for ~3 years or so while it teaches you nothing new. Hope you bought the lifetime membership!
>>
>>15769004

Actually that is a good point on Memrise i can actually customize how much i want to learn per day and there is no limit if you want to study more words or review them.
>>
>>15769004

Anki takes too much effort to set up and with Memrise its crowdsourced much more than Anki is. And the whole login to be online is null. I mean if you use it on your phone once your logged in it already knows who you are and all that stuff. It supports G+ login for easy access. Logging in is a 3rd world problem. It takes 3 steps.

Pretty much all of the untranslated VN thread speaks Japanese to some degree (ignoring those that use machine translation), that's probably the peak of 4chan's Japanese ability aside from maybe a few individuals in DJT or /int/.

The rest of /jp/ is probably no better than /a/ in that respect.
>>
>>15772035
Don't forget about the idolfags. The vast majority of the material they deal in will never see a translation. Some of the musicfags (of various kinds) are in the same boat.

I agree that outside of a few threads it's not looking great.

I'm unable to read any 'actual' Japanese nor pronounce it, and the same with hearing. I'm really only able to understand Japanese if it's written in English(the pronunciations, not the word. ...though I am working on it. It was a new years resolution to be able to read it by the end of the year, and I've gotten to the point where I can speed up my learning quite a lot.

I am kinda bad at grammar still, though Anki tells me I know 362 Kanji, and I can read a pretty reasonable amount of Japanese with some effort--sometimes without having to look up a Kanji or two.

I have gotten to the point where I am learning 24 Kanji every 3-5 days, though I plain to speed that up a bit when I start getting used to that rate.

>>15768384
I think I have no problem figuring out the grammar--it is meaningless without exposure to usage anyway, so, I think, there's only so much to be learned from a textbook.
The real bitch is vocabulary--when you are reading, you mostly cannot just GUESS a word. You have to look it up even if you inferred the meaning right because the pronunciation is hidden. It is so fun, but consulting the dictionary breaks my flow. Still... it's like reading the hidden knowledge that scant a Westerner has ever known... What a time to be alive.
>>
>>15789348
You should check out Wanikani. It's kinda great for learning vocabulary.

As for grammar, you should blog on something like lang-8. It's a place where you post things in horrible Japanese, and Japanese people correct you in exchange for you correcting their horrible English.
>>
>>15789366
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out.
>>
>>15789366

Lang-8 was pretty decent when I used it a while back.

You have to make a real effort to make it part of your online routine though, even if it doesn't take long, I ended up dropping it out of laziness and should really probably go log in again.

Also be aware it's pretty unlikely you're going to make any real connection with any Japanese person there, most of the time my posts would get responses from completely different people besides like one guy who was pretty nice. Even he didn't want to exchange info for offsite chat though.

Go out and talk to people. Just try speaking to anybody when the opportunity and context is acceptable.

If they shy away from you and treat you rudely, just shrug it off and move on. You'll eventually meet people who will want to stay in contact with you. You must first wade through all the people who don't, is all.

>Go out and talk to people.

Any ideas on where? I was thinking of talking to cool looking people at comiket but I was sick this year and I'm not in Japan around New Year...

Sometimes the cosplay scene seems fun but I've always found it a bit ht and miss hitting it off conversationally with completely domestic-oriented Japanese people possibly years younger... the people who are interested in westerners usually just ask me what sports or alcohol I like when I left my home country to escape that kind of stuff. Also girls here seem to be overly-averse to making platonic friends with guys and meeting up unless it's part of a group.
>>
>>15794568
Anywhere. On the train, at the store, etc. The important part is for there to be context and reason behind it. If you just randomly walk up to somebody out of nowhere, it'll probably freak them out a bit.

One thing I liked to do was carry around a notebook and study kanji whenever I went out. You know, at a cafe or something. If you see a nice person that you'd like to talk to that is nearby, ask them if your kanji stroke order is correct or something. Then, try to turn that into a conversation. If they give you the cold shoulder, just forget it and move on.

It's all about how you do it, but this is more of a social skills problem and nothing really to do with Japanese. If you make the situation awkward, it'll be awkward. If you do it with confidence and don't just beeline across a room to talk to somebody and say HELLO HOW ARE YOU MY NAME IS DAVID, you'll be fine.

And yes, most people are just passively interested in foreigners. They don't want you as a friend because they don't know what kind of baggage you're carrying.

The most important thing is a social network. It's hard to get those friends at first, but once you do, it can expand a lot. Foreigners who have a Japanese friend or two with them are immediately welcomed by any group because you're no longer just the scary stranger foreigner.

Is your ultimate goal getting a girlfriend or something? Girls don't really want platonic guy friends because it always ends up being non-platonic with the guy falling for the girl or just plain trying to be a sexual creep. And yes, being in a group if the key. By meeting in groups, you're showing people that you're interested in making actual relationships, not lust-driven flirt encounters disguised as friendship.

The best way to make a girlfriend is to be introduced to somebody or by somebody. It's the same as anywhere else. If a girl is introduced to you by somebody she knows, she's much more likely to warm up to you.

I'm married but too girly to really get along with other guys. My wife says I should try finding gay dudes to be friends with. I can't stand groups.

>lust-driven flirt encounters disguised as friendship.

I don't mind that either though.
>>
>>15794606
>it always ends up being non-platonic with the guy falling for the girl

It's always the opposite in my case. I'm just too attractive.
>>
>>15794621

What? Do you ask to paint their nails or something? Sounds like you're just making some weird excuse for being socially awkward.
>I can't stand groups.
Why are you trying to make friends if you hate groups?
>I don't mind that either though.
Are you trying to find some whore to bang on the side?
>>
>>15794661
>Why are you trying to make friends if you hate groups?
...what?
>>
>>15794679
It's a legitimate question. Do you just plan on always hanging out with your friends 1-on-1 for the rest of your life? People naturally like to get together and hang out in groups. Not doing so makes you seem like some kind of loner that can't get along with anybody. It's not normal.
>>
>>15794661
>Do you ask to paint their nails or something?

The last guy friend I made here online used to work at a crossdressing cafe and kept asking to meet up to practice make-up on me but he didn't seem to put any effort into looking nice normally so it was too weird.
>>
>>15794693
>Do you just plan on always hanging out with your friends 1-on-1 for the rest of your life?

Yes?

Are you a girl? People hang out one on one plenty. Usually when people hang out in groups in they're not real friends, just hanging out of convenience as an excuse to drink.

>It's not normal.

This is a very weird thing to complain about on /jp/.
>>
a-am I in /r9k/ now?
>>
>>15794701
>I made here online
There's your problem. Actual people in the real world tend to not act like the social degenerates you find here on this website.

I think you're confusing "girly" with some sort of fetishism.

>>15794709
>Are you a girl?
What does that have to do with anything? You seem to be implying that men do not hang out in groups and that you are the norm for only wanting to associate with people on a 1-on-1 basis at all times.

>Usually when people hang out in groups in they're not real friends
This has no basis in any sort of fact or rationality. Humans, both male and female alike, associate in groups of all different sizes and backgrounds. People like to hang out 1-on-1, and they like to hang out in groups of 3 or more just as much.

I guess when my group of friends hangs out to play Smash together, we're not really actually friends or anything. When my friend meets with his three other guy friends to go out and take nature photos, I guess they're not actually friends, either.

I swear, you people get more retarded every day.

Weird. It's not letting me post a reply in Japanese. Keeps giving me a spam message.

I see. In my case, I'm the worrywart so I have my concerns of speaking only English at home in a non-English-speaking country, but I do want our children to be able to speak it. It'd be a real shame if they weren't able to speak with their American relatives.

How the hell do you guys balance having kids while presumably being /jp/-level superperverts?

I don't know how to normify myself that much, I don't even like children

Why are you coming to /jp/ and complaining that people are retarded or not normal here? Don't you have anything better to do?

Don't worry, they won't want to speak English after they spend the first decade or two being bullied constantly for having a dumb weeb as a father.

Why do you assume that all /jp/ users are "superperverts"?

I bet right now there are some bored Japanese housewives arguing on 2ch waiting for their husbands to come home saying things like "Even if you marry that foreign guy and move abroad your kids will still have Japanese DNA and be bullied for be oriental looking".
>>
>>15795560
I assume the 80-20 rule where Sanae's ten desires are in the 20%.

Racial bullying in the west has been pretty much stamped out by multiculturalism and aversion to looking like a racist.

But in a class of 24 kids, where yours is the only one who looks any different, and the parents don't give a fuck about their kids looking racist? You better believe your little freak is getting bullied into an early grave.
>>
>>15795574
Maybe if you don't properly teach them about their proud western heritage and how the other kids are just jealous of their superior future career and dating prospects.
>>
>>15795429
That's fine, we can just talk in English.

Not raising your child to be bilingual, especially in a country like Japan where English speaking ability is held in such a high regard in both business and casual settings, is just a waste. You should definitely do it.

In my opinion, the best approach is Minority Language at Home: speak only English at home and let the child catch up on Japanese through speaking with relatives, friends, kindergarten, etc. Trust me, they'll eventually learn Japanese at a fluent level just from living in Japan. The age cut off for learning a language at a native level is generally considered to be around 9 years old. As long as they're still below that age, they can have native fluency.

My wife wants to do the One Parent One Language approach. I don't like that because it just means the child will likely give up on talking to me in English because why bother? Everybody else is speaking Japanese, and their entire world is Japanese. Kids don't care about being bilingual -- they only want what is easy.

Kyushu, eh? How do you like it there? I couldn't imagine not being near Tokyo. After growing up in the backwater boonies countryside all my life, living in a giant metropolis like Tokyo is my dream come true.
>>
This talk of /jp/ unironically raising children will just end in tears.
>>
>>15799782
Right. If one were to go through with it, the Minority Language at Home approach seems the best bet. I just worry that it will significantly set him/her behind when he does start school or daycare or the like. Would "at home" include when the family is out and about around town? I feel like that would be a prime opportunity to expand his English vocabulary and expressions, but again, that would be denying him the opportunity to learn Japanese that other children his age would know.

Well, like I said, I'm a worrywart. While I definitely want to teach my kids English and believe that the method you described would be best, I still worry. Guess in a way, you just kind of have to have faith and jump in, especially with your first child.

I absolutely love it here. My hometown was somewhat small, but I guess that's what I've been conditioned to love in a way, haha. I visited Tokyo once and it was okay for about a week, but I couldn't imagine living there. Too much hustle and bustle. Different strokes!

Have you tried to improve your Japanese either by private study or classes since you've moved here?

私、「N5」をします、今年の終わりに。でも、日本語の能力は少し下手ですから、パンャもう開始遊ました。その、楽しいです、でも少し寂しいね。

That was probably a goddamn mess. I installed Pangya to try and get actual text conversation practice in, but the Japanese servers are so dead, they seem to have less than 100 concurrent players at any time.

I wish I had a game and a buddy I could just jump in, do what I can, practice talking to another human being, have some fun and not worry about bothering the other side. That's exactly how I became fluent in English around six or seven years ago, joining random games, forums, chatrooms and sometimes even Skype calls and getting as much practice as I could with buddies.
>>

I wanted to start learning. I just don't know where to start and what would be a good source to learn from
>>

I will set them behind, but that's an unfortunate reality of raising a bilingual child. Unless you're some kind of rich person who can afford to make an absolutely perfect vaccuum environment where they receive equal language expose all day every day, they're going to naturally learn one language and then play catch-up with the other.

"At home" means you and your wife. If your child wants something from you or needs to hear something from you, it's English only. If they are talking to anybody else, Japanese is okay. You're also allowed to speak Japanese in front of the child but never directed AT the child.

And yes, you just have to have faith and cast aside all doubt. Go for it. The worst case scenario is that their English won't be native somehow because the Japanese overtakes it while they're young. There's no possible way that they won't be able to learn Japanese while living in Japan and going to Japanese school.

Nah, I personally just study at home and with my wife. I very much enjoy learning through living, but I admit that I could definitely benefit from taking classes of some kind.

Start with learning hiragana and katakana. Then download the Genki textbook series and just practice. Watch anime in Japanese with subtitles, even if you can't understand what they're saying.
>>
>>15800084
Just letting you know in Singapore they do teach English and Japanese. Bilingual basically. Either that or it might be best to find a school that could teach students two languages.

Because not everybody is a disgusting pervert?

And not everybody is attracted to their own children. If you have sexual thoughts about your own kids, something is very wrong with you. If anything, you end up wanting to love them and kill them simultaneously.

May I ask what is this from?

I mean I'm aware it's a report card for the JLPT N1 but is this the real thing or just a website where you can try out your skills? If it's the latter I'd be interested, because so far I'm only aware of J-CAT as serious website where one can test his Japanese skills.

Thanks for the push, man. It's definitely something that I need to do more research into (in addition to basic child-rearing and pregnancy materials), but being bilingual is certainly a necessity in my eyes.

Well based on your previous posts, I think you could do N2 with virtually no problems. There are a few books out there that cater to the different levels of the JLPT, from vocab to grammar to kanji, and those are definitely helpful. But the problem is, some of the N2 and most of the N1 grammar just isn't used in daily conversation, so you learn it for the test and then just about instantly forget it - at least, that's how it worked for me. But you should totally go for it, even if just to gauge yourself.

>My wife wants to do the One Parent One Language approach. I don't like that because it just means the child will likely give up on talking to me in English because why bother?
My girlfriend and I talked about this - she's an international school manager, so she's dealing with interviews and prospective students all day. She fully supports both parents speaking English, and letting the child learn Japanese from others. Having the mother speak Japanese and the father speak English is a bad way to go, because the kid will probably (naturally) see the father less during those early, formative years, so their English skill will be seriously lacking.

Also, bilingual kids seem to start speaking later, in my experience. Takes a bit longer to get those connections made in the brains, or whatever.

Kids are resilient though, they'll learn Japanese. They absorb language without even having things explained, it's ridiculous.

I wouldn't worry so much about grinding kanji - that will come with learnin vocab. Work on your grammar, too, for sure. Even just some basics will help you make more sense of what you'll come across in various media.

Is it so hard to talk about a language without blogging about every inane detail of your life? Why should I care about your girlfriend or children? Why did you mention them and how are they relevant to anything on this board?
Is your narcissism truly so grand that even when you breach a place that was once free from your trite existence you must find ways to talk about yourself?
