Mima as a whole might not be canon. She never made it past PC98. I really wish ZUN understood the "is PC98 canon?" question at the Q&A he did at a con in America recently.

I'm starting to lean towards the "it is" side, as Renko's hair and wardrobe have started to really resemble Yumemi in the past few albums that weren't DBOA.

Of course, there's no way for us to know unless ZUN does something crazy that reveals it.

Not even ZUN is sure of the status of PC-98 in the canon, but this image explains it kind off.

Basically, PC-98 is canon unless it directly contradicts Windows. PC-98 characters are still around, they just don't get screentime

My theory is, other than the stated Hakurei deity theory, SinGyoku is/(are?) the first Hakurei(s). They are a human youkai couple that went on to produce half-youkai descendants which I think explains why Reimu has an innate ability in magic without even training. This is just my bullshit that I made for fun.

What's up with faceless men in doujins? They're weird and creepy. I get that they're supposed to be "blank templates" and that Touhou has pretty much no male characters, but how hard is it to make a generic-looking male character with an actual face?

Reimu's ability is spiritual ability, not magic though. Most characters don't even use "magic" except witches.
