Touhou is very much a part of otaku culture, mainly the games which are the central piece of the series of course.

>go back to /v/
I highly doubt most people playing touhou are from /v/ or even go there at all.

tl,dr: this isn't /a/, this is a multimedia board. fuck off dummy.

If you haven't noticed, /jp/ has always had Touhou gameplay threads. The last one we had was recently filled, so this is the new one. I don't see how this thread doesn't belong here since it's about Touhou's primary content. Better something like this than all the generic 'I want to fuck this 2hu' threads.

Guys, I've been playing Touhou three times a week minimum since 10 months, and I haven't cleared a single game on Normal, and I've only 1cc'd MoF on Easy. Am I naturally bad at these games?
>>
>>15693397
Maybe. But blaming it on being "naturally bad" is bad attitude, unless you don't have hands or something.

How long for each session? Are you using your bombs?

You can't stop me from progressively 1ccing every single game with every single shottype and difficulty, starting from easy mode, nerd.

How can you call yourself a Touhou fan if you haven't even done this?
>>
What's the best way to get better? I'm still doing easy in PCB. Can make it through the first 3 stages without dying at all and then lose it all on the 4th.

If I lose all my lives, should I start over, or should I keep going until I finish, no matter how many continues it takes? Should I work my way through the difficulties, only moving my way up when I 1cc, or is that a waste of time?
>>
>>15695137
Not doing easy would be a great start anon.
You may use continues so you get the stage unlocked in practice mode and learn it there

>>
>>15695252
Without items of course.

I've gotten stuck before but managed to get past the previous days.
This thing however, feels way beyond my skill level and everything being RNG doesn't help either.
Is this particular spell that difficult without items or should I just give up on my no item run?
>>
>>15695266
It is pretty difficult, expect much much more attemps. The problem with this card is that if you are not constantly streaming in an upwards diagonal movement you are gonna get walled. Another problem is the random nature of the notes and the arrows, sometimes is easier but most of the time Yatsuhashi trows a giant blurt of them that makes streaming much much harder.
>I've gotten stuck before but managed to get past the previous days
That's the second difficulty gap spellcard in the game. If i remember correctly it goes like this:

-Yuyuko butterflies
-Yatsuhashi Koto sign
-Mamizou Humans
-Sanae's Lasers
-Yukari impossible danmaku
-Remilia Fitful nightmare
-Toyosatomimi constitutional bomb

Out of all of them the Sanae one is the easiest and koto sign, Miko's bomb and fitful nightmare are the hardest.
>>
>>15695308
Well I guess I'll keep trying and hope I get 5 lucky streams.
I know that these random elements help prevent safespots and stuff, but I wish ZUN didn't go overboard with it, because I don't feel like I'm getting better.

>>
>>15695360
I suggest you to skip it for now and do it later. Koto sign is one of those spellcards that make you think you are doing progress after doing two waves correctly making you try again and again and again. In reality, those two waves were probably a fluke.
This card is pure reading skills and (one of the few spellcards that need in the whole series) twiching reflexes.
>>
Was Great Fairy Wars always so easy? I was bored, so I booted it up and I got a 1cc on Normal in probably a little more than 30 minutes when I remember having to play the game for weeks to do the same thing
>>
>>15695862
You get a lot of resources so it's easy to 1cc, A1 especially.
>>
Tips for 1cc-ing UFO?
>>
>>15693397
Yes, you're not talented. Give up since your genes are not suited for these games.
>>
>>15695929
Figure out and memorize your optimal UFO collection route. (I found gathering mostly lives to be more reliable, but bombs are technically more efficient.) Stock up as many resources as you can through stage four, know which of Shou's attacks to bomb through, and you're golden. It's about equally easy with any shot type.

>>15695868
How so? You barely get any bombs, and it takes pretty much the whole game to get to full shot power.
>>
>>15696448
>You barely get any bombs
lol
>>
>>15696448
With good milking you can get upwards of 20 lives and 30 bombs in a run. Bad milking will get you less resources of course, but it's still a lot for such a short game.

Full shot power isn't really important, so long as you get level 10.

>>

I don't mind some discussion of other shmups here so long as it doesn't drown out the Touhou discussion. But maybe best to go to /vg/ or /vr/.
>>
>>15696554
Is that on Lunatic? I only remember getting, like, one or two bombs per stage on Normal.
>>
>>15699049
That would be on lunatic. You could probably get almost that amount of bombs on hard too. I think there are a lot of places where you can't get 30% or larger freezes (double PF gain) on normal though, in comparison to the higher difficulties.

For lives you get pretty similar amounts on all difficulties, since all you have to do is freeze enemies instead of shoot them.

That was actually one of the more productive uses of my playtime. Don't think I was paying proper attention to the slave spirit thing beforehand.

At least Keine's a breeze now. Can actually access her last spell now.
>>
>>15706383
Keine always seemed fun to me, I never killed her familiars before. Not that I can now
>>
>>15706489
it's mostly her nonspells where I end up killing the slaves. I can't really tell the difference in Eph. 137 and masakado crisis, at least.

Marisa's nonspell slaves also seem pretty pointless to kill. The fly around pretty quickly and Marisa seems to replace them quite quickly.
>>
>>15706533
>Marisa's nonspell slaves also seem pretty pointless to kill.
That's debatable, if you are playing team ghost, then Youmu is able to kill them as fast as she replaces it, giving you more space to move.
There is a non spell that is really annoying if i remember correctly, if you don't kill the slaves fast then you get a wall of stars
Thinking about it how the hell I'm going to get through that without killing them nor bombing? I'll get a replay
>>
>>15706573
Oh yeah that's what I saw but Reimu doesn't seem to have the firepower for it, or at least it's not concentrated enough.

I think you're talking about her 2nd or 3rd nonspell? I call that wall of stars the pink tentacle because it fucks me over every time I encounter it.

What I think I'm going to start trying is simply blasting her down with Yukari as quickly as possible and hoping Ran's spinning ends the pattern before I die. There are some gaps but they are small and I don't trust their consistency.
>>
>>15706602
Isn't team border's hitbox the smallest? Maybe you just can
>>
>>15706633
I just took at it and that wall of stars is as densely packed as the first time I saw it. The stars were overlapping, even.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4jggJEOy_Y
The pattern it's in starts around 2:13 in this video.
>>
>>15706774
It's some serious shit even on normal.
I don't even wanna know how shitty it's going to be in lunatic
>>
>>15706891
It could be prideful of me to say this but it doesn't look like it becomes much worse. The lunatic video I just watched did what I think works with the whole "just gun her down with Yukari" strategy.

Even the guy in that video I posted clears it for the first time and judging from the spellcard history he's attempted marisa less than a handful of times. It's kinda dumb, I think. I started keeping a notebook of how to react to each boss and obsess over how to position reimu so that two streams are hitting keine while the third is disabling a slave, but that one pattern it turns out looks really easy with the most simple and direct approach.

>>
>>15706774
That video is terrible, you should try to find a NMNB replay instead. Marisa's fight is a bit more challenging than Reimu's, but ultimately not bad.

First pattern: big huge gaps, just sail through them. First spell: the large stars are just to distract you; keep moving horizontally so you don't have to worry about the aimed clusters, and focus on the horizontal stars. Second pattern: most of those lines of stars are porous enough to dodge through as long as you don't panic, so just read ahead and don't get trapped by the densest walls. Second spell: you can pretty much stay in one place and let the lines of stars contract/expand around you. Third pattern: bug type, don't panic. Third spell: The big stars are distraction again, the lasers are predictable zoning, move side to side and focus on the small stars. Fourth pattern: Again, just read ahead and stay away from the solid walls, and try to end it before you have to dodge that one clusterfuck ring. Fourth spell: Know your timing, misdirect, don't let the shaking mess you up. Fifth spell: Start in one corner, move as little as possible to dodge each aimed cluster, don't forget about the lasers.

Even if you just bomb through the fourth pattern and Earthlight Ray, that's more than acceptable resource usage for a 1cc.

>>15707432
Is that one any good?
>>
>>15707589
It's pretty good, aside from the gimmick system sometimes taking away the auto collect area and the deathbomb window being minuscule.

Is it normal to be unable to read danmaku horizontally / from below?

Horizontally I can kinda see it but it's very strained, with my peripheral vision, with only a vague idea of whether it might be in my way or not (in reality 2-3 cm away on the screen...)

From below it is a bit better, but my "reading penetration" is shallow and the trajectories confuse me, so I run into bullets while perfectly aware of it but unable to change anything as my brain is overriding common sense. I don't actually understand this myself, but it happens a lot.

Just call it getting hit. Your hitbox hits the bullet's hitbox, same thing.

Actually, was it on Kanako's 2nd spellcard? The bullet's hitboxes are apparently bigger than they would normally be for some reason, so maybe calling it "clipped" actually works there.

Today I was playing Touhou and stopped to think about how I face the "challenges" of the game. For some background, see my picture. The thing is, whenever I'm trying to achieve something that I've never did before, like when I started beating the game in hard mode, I feel that my approach isn't the best for improving. For example, whenever I tried to beat PCB's Phantasm stage, I tried to go through the whole stage without dying, and wasting the least amount of bombs. If I died before getting to Yukari, I'd restart. I'd restart if I died before stage 3 too. This way, I could beat many extras and hard modes, but my spell card capturing rate is ridiculously low. Now, I can play those games normally, without restarting at the first mistake, but I feel that it's not because my dodging is better (it improved a lot from when I could only beat normal modes and a few extras, but still.) but because I memorized what to do in the stages, etc. I know that danmaku requires dodging and memorizing. But what's more important, having the "dodging skill" or just memorizing it?
>>
>>15740560
I pretty much play the same way as you. I have a hard time dodging new patterns and it takes a bit of time to get used to. I'd say that the dodging skill is more important however, if I were better at it I might have hard 1ccs.
>>
>>15740668
From now on I'll have a different approach on the game, I'll stop restarting at every mistake early on. I think I have this "obsession" on restarting because I can't separate "practicing" from the "well now's time to 1CC this". Practicing is important. I haven't 1CC'd SA, UFO and LoLK in hard/extra because I haven't tried enough times to memorize everything. Beating it this way isn't the best way, I think.

Anyway, let's stop restarting so often. Instead of restarting, let's see how far we'll go. We may not 1CC it but we can get better at other parts of the stage/etc.
>>
When playing GFW I can't move left nor up when focusing and shooting at the same time.
Has this happened to anyone else, and does anybody know how to fix it?
>>
>>15741021
Never heard about this. It is only GFW that bugs like this?
>>
>>15741021
Sounds like is your keyboard. Try using autohotkey and changing the default contols to something your keyboard can register.
>>
>>15741090
Yeah, it only happens when I press and hold the rapid fire button and focus at the same time. Charging a freeze and moving works properly.
This also isn't an issue I've had with any of the other games.
>>
>>15741021
It's probably because your keyboard doesn't have this or similar functionality.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollover_(key)

Basically you can't press more than a certain limit of keys in the same area of the keyboard
>>
>>15741114
>>15741138
Well shit, it looks like I will just need to deal with it for the time being until I get a new keyboard.
Thanks for the help.

Is 1CC'ing a game considered "standard" among players, or is it an extra challenge? I'm at the point where I can clear Touhou games on Normal, but I still need my continues.
>>
>>15741616
1ccing is considered a standard among developers seeing as that's the only way to get the good ending.
>>
>>15740166
Yeah, I think so, but it also happens on Byakuren's 1st spellcard and stage 4 Momiji sometimes.
>>
>>15740166
>The bullet's hitboxes are apparently bigger than they would normally be for some reason
The hitboxes of the bullets in MoF stay the same if the graphic changes, so on Divining Crop they're the size of the oval bullet hitboxes. It also happens less obviously on Source of Rains, but the rest of the game doesn't really have any of this, and it doesn't seem to happen in SA and on.

Any tips on Byakuren's last spell in UFO?

I always get there and then die. It looks like bombing out of despair is a bad idea since you lose time and the spell keeps getting wilder and wilder, but dying and having your firepower decrease also sucks.

The hitboxes on those seals are way smaller than the sprites; it's very forgiving. Don't be afraid to make some risky maneuvers and sneak right between two that seem like they're closing in on you. Stay in the middle and don't let yourself get pushed all the way to the bottom edge. Bombing is always better than dying.

I'm autistic. What's a good amount of power to have collected in EoSD before Rumia with ReimuB on Lunatic? No bombs, and no suicides I suppose.

I've been trying myself, noticed that there is luck on two big powerups, and I've never had more than 75 by the end of the stage portion. A lot of fairies get away still. My best before midboss Rumia is something like 38 or 39, not sure, best before the curving line fairies is 25.
>>
>>15755279
Isn't anything above 64 good enough? I average around 68 myself.

Since I'm already posting, do other people have as hard a time with Chen as I do? She moves around way too much to the point where I'm not confident I could beat her if I played Reimu or Marisa.
>>
>>15754947
why?
>>
>>15755306
That's with a lack of luck? Well, that seems right to me. I guess I want to know if it's possible to get more than 75. No matter what I did, I never got 76, and if I dropped items, the dropped items would add up to 75 or less. It felt as if there is a predetermined amount of powerups that can spawn, but that probably makes no sense.

anyone know how the fuck im supposed to dodge these bubble danmaku. The hitbox and the sprite are so disproportionate that i feel like my only hope of surviving is just jumping in and hoping for the best. I can't even get past parsee on normal mode because her spellcard "Hate for the Humble and Rich" has so many of these bullets
>>
>>15755378
The patterns feel uninspired.
Many of the early bosses just drag on for too long.
The resource system is complete trash.
One of the Reimu/Okuu teams completely breaks the game, and the shot types in general feel incredibly unbalanced.
There are some serious optimization issues, and high bullet density can cause slow down even on decent rigs.

If you're looking for a fan game, you can do better.

>>15755431

>>
>>15760816
You don't shoot at the fake Parsee.
Like, I can understand people not understanding the gimmick behind Honest Man's Death and what not, but you should realize that shooting the fake Parsee is incorrect immediately after shooting it for the first time. Just stay under the Parsee that's shooting small bullets, and when she stops firing, you have to stop firing and move over to the other side, because she's about to swap sides.
>>
>>15757139
>I'm a meager 313, top 22%.
The number you get can be influenced by external factors as well, like latency and whatnot. In any case, as another anon stated very, very, very little of shmup skill is actually based on reaction time. The biggest two factors are bullet reading (both in terms of recognizing and accurately predicting bullet trajectories, as well as making the best decision very quickly on how to avoid them) and movement ability (being able to move precisely where you want, when you want, and how you want both focused and unfocused).

I think those two things are the foundation, but then you add on top of them things like muscle memory (especially important for scoring due to grazing mechanics but also useful for survival against static patterns), memorization (in terms of routing and how best to handle patterns), perseverance (grinding), being able to handle nerves in an important run, and so on. Yes, reaction speed does factor in there somewhere but speaking from personal experience the vast majority of mistakes have very little do with reaction speed. Especially since very few patterns in Touhou have lightning fast bullets to begin with.
>>
>>15757139
Good reflexes are a meme. You just need to go full shmup.
>>
>>15762064
I think they matter the most when you cannot read a pattern properly, but as your reading skills go up, you can read more of the pattern at once and consequently flail less.
>>
Grinding the powerup collection strat on EoSD stage 1 has very quickly made me comfortable with dodging sideways and underneath in now any situation. WTF I love stage 1 now.

PCB is relatively easy early on but Youmu is really tough and Yuyuko is simply unbeatable to me on normal.

UFO is average on difficulty on normal, but you can accumulate a shitload of lives and bombs, that's how I managed to beat it.

Ten desires is fairly easy, I predict it will be the next Touhou I'll be able to beat on normal.

For PCB, have you tried SakuyaA? I find her to be like playing on Easy mode, her mediocre bomb aside.
Since you get lives when you have collected a certain number of point items, it's even more useful than in other games to know when it's safe to go to the PoC, so make that your second most important part in studying, the most important of course getting used to the patterns.

With enough lives, you can bomb many spellcards since SakuyaA gets four bombs per life.

This also means you don't have to be afraid of having to use a bomb if you screw up, so it lessens the burden on you mentally.

Also, there's no shame in ending your borders on the last second it's active. You're playing for survival, not score, and a screen cancel is way more useful than a second more of auto-collecting items.

UFO, because I felt I knew it the most from the beginning after touring the games. Then I tried to 1cc it for a year, so I know even more than before. I'm just really shit at execution.

>>15785178
When I tried for a week, I was incredibly inconsistent and used her exclusively, occasionally used Reimu (both) but Sakuya was the most comfy for me. Prismrivers always began the shitkicking and youmu/yuyuko would finish me off. If I did good. Sometimes I would die before I made it to Alice for god knows what reason.

I think the final boss difficulty counts a lot.

PCB is not that hard, but Yuyuko is the hardest final boss on normal, that's why I'm still far from 1cc it.

MoF is not that easy, what makes it beatable is the fact Kanako is by far the easiest final boss on normal.
>>
Should I use more focus or no on most TH? I once was so dumb I didn't know focus was in EoSD, so I was playing without any focus. I lost all my continues before Patche in stage 4.
>>
>>15785357
MoF I never got through on easy solely because of Kanako and how the easy difficulty changes her spellcards. I crawled up to her with a lot of continues but that was that.

My first 1cc for easy on my tours was SA, I think Utsuho is still the most easy final boss but everything before her is absolutely brutal so it makes up for it in a way.

>>15785362
It's more about knowing when to focus than how much you (don't) do it. It also depends on the game and what you're trying to do (i.e. IN's human/youkai gauge).
>>
>>15784834
Tossing in my own two cents. I haven't played it much but I felt the first few stages were pretty easy and then suddenly stage 4 boss comes in to kick me in the nuts. Might be mixing up some games but I'm pretty sure MoF was the one with the extremely short second stage, that might also make it seem easier since the first two stages go by so quickly.
>>
>>15785380
Aya is the casual filter of MoF, it happens.
>>
What's your honest opinion on LoLK?
>>
>>15785396
>>15785397
it's pretty good, but also really hard
clownpiece is a massive wall and i hate fighting her
music is a mixed bag
pointdevice is a neat concept but losing power every time you get hit is dumb
i love that reisen is playable and relevant, she's my favorite
>>
>>15785397
This game is pretty fun but pointdevice just suck. Some patterns are really dumb, legacy is fun and shot types are extremely unbalanced but overall i like it. However i can see why most people don't.
>>
>>15785397
I played it for hours on normal difficulty, pointdevice. Then I compared my experience to videos of it on normal, legacy and never picked it up again.

I stopped not long after I made it past Clownpiece's first spellcard, having spent five hours trying to get to her.

It's balanced around pointdevice mode and I would honestly rather play Impossible Spellcard because the difficulty is part of the gimmick, as well as having a more "Free" structure for what pointdevice was trying to go for. You're able to select a spellcard and either go for it or a different spellcard at will instead of mashing your face in until you win.

But enough about isc/lolk on that mode. Legacy mode is pretty alright, not a fan of how grazing is needed to farm lives but I think that's just preference.
>>
>>15785397
I really liked it. Being balanced for Pointdevice Mode when the canon route is Legacy is kinda shit, but other than that I have no major problems with it.
>>
>>15785368
>I think Utsuho is still the most easy final boss but everything before her is absolutely brutal so it makes up for it in a way.
Have you tried normal? It was the complete opposite for me, getting to her is fairly easy, but her fight is devastating
>>15785397
I really like it, Legacy mode makes up for the clusterfuck PD is. I love most of the cast, and the music is pretty good as well, like something you'll expect from a Touhou game but with a nice new sense to it.
Even though I have yet to play TD and DDC I actually played LoLK before them, and I play it from time to time, I'll go for the 1cc after I have at least cleared the previous games.
>>
>>15785537
I haven't gotten to her on normal since Orin exists. Then again I've always started having issues when stage 5 shows up.

trying this last night on worse equipment while half-asleep, I got 250.
reflexes hardly matter for touhou, though

Deathbombing is always a good skill to have. Shit happens.

It's a bitch. Keep trying. Don't use long bombs like master spark.

The japanese fanbase is having a extra boss rush event going on. There is apparently a time limit to do them in. Not sure how long it lasts, but it has been going on for a few days already. Anyone know nip and can head over to 2ch to get the details?
>>
>>15785397
Unironically my favorite game in the series. This of course includes all the side games.
>>
>>15785683
And why is that?
>>
>>15785705
It was a long while since I had so much fun playing one of the main games and one of the few where I like practically the whole cast. I always been a fan of the lunarians and their story so to see it continued after ULiL is great.

Played the demo since day 1 for hours on end daily and did the same when the full game released. I never done lunatic up until that point but thanks to pointdevice I was actually able to clear the game on Lunatic. It was tough but I managed to beat it after hours of failures. Fun memories. Not long after I did my first hard mode 1cc on legacy with marisa. I find the game to be solid. The stages and spellcards lean towards pointdevice as far as balancing goes but once you already know what's coming it's not so much of an issue. The difficulty is higher than average, but it is definitely doable if you keep at it.

Zun did an amazing job with the stages and the overall atmosphere of the game. Stage 4 and stage 6 themes in particular start out beautifully for example. Definitely no complains in the music department on my end. Personally, I find stage 6 theme to be one of the best out of the entire series.

I know one of the big complains I see a lot is that Junko isn't a good final boss fight. I think the opposite. Incorporating spellcards into character's personalities is something Zun has always done and he did a good job showing us that. Simplistic danmaku for the sole purpose of beating one's opponent is a concept I can appreciate. Extra was really fun too.

Meant to say IN. Don't know why I typed that.
>>
>>15785809
Sounds like you really liked the story.
I wish I cared enough but for me it was always an afterthought and gameplay always comes first.
>>
>>15785824
It was like that for me before too. Nowadays I started to care more and more about the story. I'm even going back to replay some of the games so i can see other character endings. I never really bothered doing all the shot types for every single game before.

>Personally, I find stage 6 theme to be one of the best out of the entire series.
The DLFR full version is even more excellent, albeit minus the anticipation from actually playing.

i've beaten her before but i lost the replay
today was the first time in awhile i've tried beating her
dying right as she starts exploding is not very fun

Ooooh boy you don't even know.

I think that Touhou has really good sound design overall.
All the important sounds are distinct enough so that you can always tell even over the loud music. For example the Extend sound effect, the droning sound effect when you're hitting a boss with just a little more health left, and of course all the different sound effects for the bullets and lasers.
These are all important sound cues to let you know about the state of the game without you having to physically move your eyes away from the bullets. It's important that they are pleasant to hear, almost as much as it's important that they're distinct.

There are exceptions, though. On the topic of LoLK, sound effect when you get a graze item is absolutely grating. Second, the sound effect when a spirit appears in Ten Desires also drives me mad, like it's a goddamn seesaw.
>>
>>15786885
Fairy wars freeze sound is too loud, and EoSD/PCB music has no volume control. You can go into the files and edit the BGM to be lower though. I made my PCB music 10 dB lower if I recall correctly.
>>
>>15786885
LoLK graze sound effect is absolutely great, it really feels like you are scraping the bullets however the one really bad thing about it is that purple aura that obscures your view.
>>
>>15786885
>On the topic of LoLK, sound effect when you get a graze item is absolutely grating.
nah, it's fine
