when i did Urban Exploration back in the late 90's early '00's, and from tacticool books and such was, dress like you belong. When i lost my place in 08, i scrounged up a helmet, vest, other little things like a nextel that i had to get into all kinds of places to find a spot to crash out completely unseen. there was an office in chapel hill, that unused since the early 80's at the latest, that had a sink and shitter, and working electric. it was fucking paradise compared to the shelter.

>back in the late 90's early '00's
This may be a bit of a non-sequitur, but I'm always given a moment of pause whenever I read something on /jp/ that reflects the fact that the average age of our userbase is somewhere in the late 20s or early 30s.

I wonder why? I've always assumed that niche interest communities like the Tetsuko, idol fans and the OC creators set up natural filters that attract older otaku while making the board somewhat hard to penetrate by "generalist" fandom-goers and the like.

Is this part of what gives the train thread its distinct feel? A lot of the people here have possibly "settled" or mellowed-out and don't get worked up over things, like the need for a thread to have a specific "purpose" beyond its existence and the joy it brings.

It is. And so much more. I can't help but feel that this threads existence must be perplexing to some. "What is this shit... nothing happens. It's ghay...blah blah blah.

It's quite amusing to see. Every thread we get the shitpost from a cross boarder. I mean what are they expecting - a crusty demons moto cross demo. Sometimes I think that we are getting so lazy that even when we are consuming entertainment it has to be spelled out for us. Like a laugh track on a shitty sitcom.

It's just a matter of perspective. As a wise man once said - If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.
There is true beauty and calming joy in watching the clouds pass overhead, the afternoon sunlight illuminate the platform. The different types of train. Or simply the hustle and bustle of ordinary people just going about there day. There is something primal about it all. Like watching a fireplace.
If you just slow down and observe for a while you may be surprised what you see. I know i have over the years. From wildlife to drunk commuters. To spectacular sunsets to blizzards that shut the station down for days. And all i had to do was just watch.

I've been in these threads from I think pretty much the first ones and all the other security cam threads that were around ages ago.

I haven't been in every single thread, every so often when I need to relax I can just switch to this and listen to the stream.
I have such vivid memories of going without sleep years ago, I didn't know if it was day or night most of the time from my fucked up sleeping pattern, it was night then, I had just finished a whole load of VNs and I all I could feel was the cold night air blowing into my room from my open window as I watched the trains for hours.

It is strange how moments like that stick.

Watching this station through all the seasons and years has been really nice in a strange way.

>>

Thanks.

That time-lapse was done from about 5:45 AM to 8:45 AM JST.

And I am using ffmpeg on linux. Here the code that I used:

totf=1440; nof=2; nos=15; \
ffmpeg -i mmsh://center3.ntt-fukushima.com/n-jraizu?MSWMExt=.asf -f image2 -vf fps=fps="$nof"/"$nos" -vframes "$totf" f%04d.png

fr=12.001; kbps=209; \
ffmpeg -r "$fr" -i f%04d.png -c:v libvpx -r "$fr" -crf 4 -b:v "$kbps"K -an -pass 1 time-lapse.webm; \
ffmpeg -r "$fr" -i f%04d.png -c:v libvpx -r "$fr" -crf 4 -b:v "$kbps"K -an -pass 2 -y time-lapse.webm

I know, a bit nerdy, but that's how I did that.

Hey, I'm technically a cross-boarder since I don't come to /jp/ much. I've been to /jp/ once in a blue moon but remember as far back as 7 years ago and these threads being here. It's incredibly nostalgic. but I just wanted to say that your last paragraph really speaks to me.

This might not be exactly related to trains, but I work at a semi-rural Costco gas station. It's simple work, but I love it because of the reasons you describe. Doing the morning routine of paperwork and cleaning, as the sun slowly reaches out over the station. The clouds slowly passing over head, sometimes in the distance, giving you a glance at their magnificent shape. Sharing a chat with the regulars while watching the day go by as the sun climbs higher up into the sky. Sometimes just watching people come in, quickly scuffle out of their vehicle while talking wistfully on their phones, carrying on with their lives.

It's a wonderful feeling, therapeutic even. What you've said about this in your last paragraph really attests to the power of just taking in the world around you. There is beauty to be found anywhere.

Sorry for blogshit, I just really wanted to you to know that someone out there appreciates your perspective, and can relate.

JR Banetsu west line uses the track seen in the webcam, the line is split in half.
Aizuwakamatsu is a terminus and reversal station on one side and a through station on the other.
Basically on the webcam, left track is banetsu for Niitsu and Niigata, on the right is banetsu for Koriyama.
The other platforms to the left (can't be seen on webcam) is for the Tadami line and Aizu Railway Aizu line. (they both terminate at Aizuwakamatsu)

I wonder if I can find that station in any of the Densha de Go games. Probably not.
>>
>>15892393
I don't know how DDGo works really but if it's possible to create custom course, you might want to search for Aizu, Aizu liner, SL Ban etsu monogatari (the steam train) etc..
>>
>>15884482
How did you zoom in like that?

FFmpeg with crop and scale options.

And I am starting to think that maybe someone at JR and/or NTT isn't that happy about random anons recording their streams, maybe.
>>
>>15896543
I really doubt they care that much, considering for how long the stream has been around.
>>
>>15896543
To them there's no difference between viewing it and recording it so they probably don't mind that part but we might be causing them to have an abnormal amount of traffic.

What? Where did you get this feeling from?

To be honest, its probably time they upgrade the set-up. its been almost a decade and its still 4:3

Does anyone think this would be a relaxing job? I mean there are very few people around at that time, so it seems like they can just do their thing in peace. I almost envy them.
>>
>>15922200
True, but then you'll have to sleep during the day.
Which can be good or bad depending on the person. With a family it must suck never being able to match schedules.
>>
>>15922247

That's a good point, I guess it would be pretty bad for someone with a wife and kids. I guess I was putting myself in their place, since that schedule would be perfect for me.

The file size is just slightly above the size of a standard screenshot, and the bitrate isn't to low to make everything unwatchable, I hope.

Do they really run the trains in that much snow?
Around here that would be enough to close most of the lines.

I miss the snow.

They've kept them running through some heavy snow. That much is pretty uncommon though usually they don't get more than a few inches at a time.

This is great but can you make it a bit longer?
>>
>>15975604
unfortunately i already deleted the recording.
additionally, this was a 1h and 26 minutes long recording. Making it longer wouldve forced me to put both a low framerate and a low bitrate which is not really affordable when the main focus of the webm is fog moving around

Oh man, great video there, good job.

Such is life.
>>
>>15509218
You can also just directly copy the streams without any encoding. It's very fast and allows you to tweak the settings yourself.

ffmpeg -i mmsh://center3.ntt-fukushima.com/n-jraizu -c:v copy -c:a copy n-jraizu.mkv

You will have to encode the streams to vp8(and vorbis) if you want to post it on here though.
>>
New thread creator add >>15980066 to >>15509218
>>
>>15981440
I would also change these two:
>ffmpeg -i mmsh://center3.ntt-fukushima.com/n-jraizu -an -y -b:v 700k n-jraizu.webm
>ffmpeg -i mmsh://center3.ntt-fukushima.com/n-jraizu -y -b:v 700k n-jraizu.webm

by adding "-c:v vp8" to them like so:
ffmpeg -i mmsh://center3.ntt-fukushima.com/n-jraizu -an -y -c:v vp8 -b:v 700k n-jraizu.webm

Webm files can contain vp9 streams as well and I think ffmpeg will attempt to encode using vp9 if you don't mention one of the two specifically. The problem is 4chan doesn't allow vp9 so it rejects them.
>>
>>15981461
Thanks.

No effect on file size right?
>>
>>15981758
It should be the same as before.
>>
>>15982327
>>15981461
Oh wait for the one with audio add "-c:a vorbis" to specify vorbis audio also.
