Check for screenshots. At least one torrent on nyaa usually has some. If not, you can check javlibrary for screenshots, if it's working (lots of people were reporting the site is having trouble currently).

DVDs, as you pointed out, are SD. HD-DVD hasn't really taken off, and is rare even outside JAV.

You can buy digitally, but do yourself a favour and don't do it. The movies have DRM, and unless you want to invest big bucks into screencapping equipment, you'll be forced to use a shitty proprietary player that is stuttery as fuck.
