JDorama/J-Dorama General

Haven't had these threads in a while.

What are you watching, what are you planning to watch? Anything you like from 2016?
>>
Could use some help. I'd like to get into drama but I don't know what to watch exactly. I've already seen 2: Ataru and Puzzle. The former was great with fun investigations, great characters and development that overlaped the formulaic format in a nice way, the second was lame as fuck. Any rec?
>>
>>15240654
If you want mystery drama, watch Galileo, Trick and Kindaichi.
>>
>>15238785
Anything with Eita is a masterpiece. Saikou no Rikon was fucking great.

Haven't watched anything from 2016 yet though. I heard Seirei no Moribito is good. Any recommendations?
>>
>>15238785

Eita is ugly as fuck, can't stand him.

Kengo Kora is my favorite drama actor.

Is Wakamonotachi good?

>>15242228
I loved it because the actors were great and the conversations really natural, but from what I've seen, the other /jp/ers didn't like it at all. You'll have to see it for yourself.

>>15241414
Superficial much? He doesn't play any ikemen roles so why would it bother you?

>>
>>15241051
I definitely recommend Trick (Abe Hiroshi and Nakama Yukie made a great pair) and Galileo (the role suited well Fuyukama Masaharu).
As for Kindaichi...aren't there at least 4 different versions with Johnny's idols? Are you talking about the first one with the Kinki Kid?
>>

Yeah, only the first two seasons with Tsuyoshi. The rest don't exist for me.

My favourite Japanese drama is a 90s series called Konna Koi no Hanashi that is probably really hard to find now but you should definitely watch it if you can get your hands on it.

soredemo ikite yuki is a masterpiece right behind the best j drama of all time: n no tame ni.
>>
>>15244334
>n no tame ni
Really? Is it that good?

I wanted to start watching but I picked Bitter Blood instead (which sucks).
>>
>>15238785
Just watched the first episode.

I don't like it.

The main character acts like a complete fucking beta retard, and it's done in a bad way and without taste. The main actor is overacting and overreacting a lot.

Both him and his father apparently haven't moved on, just because their daughter/sister died, FIFTEEN years ago! And they still think about it every day!

The whole thing seems so unrealistic. How is it possible to be haunted by something that happened ages ago? Of course, some scars will always remain, but people move on...

Does it ever get better or should I drop it now?

Yes, drop it. It's as you described it. Don't waste your time. One one hand, you can kinda understand what they went through, but on the other hand, too many characters go full retard. Especially the mom (victim's side). OP's show isn't good at all.

Overall, the story & dialogue is fucking shit.

Good things about it are:
- main theme song
- setting (countryside/rural-ish area). Sometimes it does a really good job of capturing that certain mood
- lead actress is cute

I like the first two seasons as well. It also helps that the opening song is catchy as fuck and tsuyoshi is a better kindaichi than fuckin matsumoto.
>>
>>15250518
I recommend GTO. The 98' version with Sorimachi and not the 2012 version.
>>
>>15256137
>>15252504
Sadly I have seen both of those GTO is good but I don't really get into the school dramas like Gokusen that focuses on fixing students personal issues week after week. That formula got old quickly for me and I'm not really a fan of episodic shows.

Just something simple preferably a high-school setting and a comedy and/or romance.

Living the dream here in Nippon, so I can comment.

I personally like Boku no Yabai Tsuma the best by a long shot. I love suspense stuff though, so that might be why.

Hayako-sensei is okay. Pretty light-hearted for the most part. Sometimes gets lost in side plots involving students I don't care for. You may feel differently though.

Omukae Death is definitely the one targeted for a younger, teenage and college age crowd. I like it though.

Juhan Shuttai is on at the same time as Boku no Yabai Tsuma, so I'm not watching it unfortunately.

Love Song is a show that I felt started off kind of so-so, but is getting better as it goes along. Fukuyama Masaharu gets top billing, but its really more about the female MC.

Sunday is when I take a break from dramas, so I can't comment on Our House.

Personally, I like Kekkon Dekinain Ja Nakute, Shinain Desu (not sure if romanji is quite accurate with spaces) and recommend it to you. It's similar to Hayako-sensei in that its about a Japanese women in her 30s looking for love (very common drama trope these days). However, it's still quite good and the better of the two, in my humble opinion.

Totoneechan airs every morning and is 15 minutes per episode, its NHK's Asadora for the season. Its pretty good, nice period piece. If a drama focusing on everyday life for a young girl in 1930s Japan sounds appealing, give it a go.

Did you watch anything from last season? Dame na Watashi wo Koi Shite Kudasai was really good, main character is so so so so very cute.

"Yui-chan maji aka-chan" roughly translates to "Yui-chan is really a baby" because of her baby face. Since she's grown a lot since her prepubescent days people say "Yui-chan maji Yui-chan" instead now. This is a 2ch only thing btw.

To keep this post related to the thread, to that anon asking about Amachan, the show will start out slow so don't be so quick to drop it. A lot of things happen in the show every week and it's a breath of fresh air coming from 11-12 episode dramas which only have a couple of interesting arcs. In Amachan it's as if you're in this new world and you get to experience many characters, stories, difficulties, settings, and so on. As an example, there is a whole long and interesting arc which is set in Tokyo. Every character's story will be expanded eventually and with many flashbacks you'll dwell into the pasts of the main characters and learn about why they turned out how they did in the "present".

Yeah, I was the one posting "updates" about the episodes as I was watching. I liked it a lot, just got sad we didn't get to know more about Yui and the last episodes got me boiling. I loved the last part where they meet again, though.

And they actually kiss instead of weird-Japanese-pecking.
>>
>>15330502
I think I loved it so much as well because it didn't have the "we can't do it because we're both girls" bullshit, it all seemed so natural (with the exception of the first two kisses, I guess).

Literally the only good lesbian jdrama I know.

American dramas are movie-like in terms of plot line and quality. Japanese dramas always teach you a lesson in every episode. Korean dramas... doctors date, prosecutors date, lawyers date.

It's a family drama + comedy
The twist is the mother died recently.
The (seemingly) spineless dad returns home from America, while bringing along a new wife.
The eldest daughter (Mana) deals with subbing in for her mother vs having to relinquish this role for a (foreign) stepmom. Should she let her take over or keep doing what she's doing? There are some sideplots with the siblings, uncle, aunt, grandad etc. Separation seems to be a major subject too.

Anyway, if you're unfamiliar with jdramas, they give zero fucks about transitioning from something funny, light-hearted to something serious and heavy and vice-versa.. The dialogue is pretty good overall. Also the casting of CKF + Mana is noice. Most of the comedy comes from their interaction and someone getting rekt

So far, the part I didn't like was, 1 minute in to ep01, they turned up the waterworks right away and didn't hold back, lel

I just finished Pieta in the toilet movie, and holy shit that was really depressing and dark. I excpected a love story between a dying artist and highschool girl where the artist start drawing again, but I pretty much got a dark Seinen manga movie adaption where it teachs you about how real life can get to be so unfair, cruel and shit. It seems that this movie was inspired by Osamu Tezuka manga but it felt pretty much a Inio Asano work.

I like them both. I wasn't too fond of Juhan Shuttai after the first episode either, but I really started liking it as I watched more. I'd say the only really cheesy moment in Juhan Shuttai beyond the first episode was in episode 8, but I still enjoyed that bit. I also probably just have a higher tolerance for what folks may consider "cheesy". But the dramas written by Akiko Nogi, and I'm a big fan of hers. She's yet to write something I haven't really enjoyed.

Does anyone know why Doctor X got "good" viewership?

I watched it out of curiousity, and something came over me. I ended up binging up to Season 2 (losing sleep and all).

I'm not a fan of medical dramas (in any country really). In fact, I avoid them. I'm not even fan of the monster/case of the week format. But for some reason I couldn't put this show down.

I like the little funny parts. Didn't care for the serious political stuff, yet I kept watching. Writing isn't that good. It's the same every episode. The worst part? There are like no plot twists - not even Doctor X failing at 1 operation. Yet, I decided to skip dinner, get only 4 hours of sleep and kept watching.

I don't remember anything from it but I'd guess that it's basically "competence porn" + underdog struggling against corrupt establishment story.
>>
>>15403153
Not OP, but you have a point. The second point though - The funny part is, she's not even underdog. By S3 she's like the best surgeon. Part of the show's "charm" is her not caring about politics too. Like she only made one of those resolve "speeches" near the end of S3.
>>
>>15403166
I think part of the charm is her not caring at all, she just wants to operate.

The words they chose to have in English comes out strange. Like, Alice would say 'help' in English, as if she couldn't remember how to say it in Japanese, and then she'd immediately say a sentence in Japanese with 'help' in it without any difficulty.
