4n is the best and most recent version but requires a CD key to play online.

The entire game is in moon, but it vocally announces Yaku when a hand is won so it can help you learn your yaku.

There's also character specific powers and abilities which nobody ever uses in online because they're all OP as fuck

>>
>>15157030
Yes. You don't get points for second place in ippan, so if you don't come first you've just wasted half an hour.
>>
>>15157044
Who cares? It's the R that matters baby. The more you inflate your R at a lower rank the better.
>>
>>15157063
Unless you're totally new to the game or just really bad, R shouldn't be a problem. By the time you reach 4d your R should be around 1800 anyway.

>>
>>15157779
If you ignore your R and first 350 games you'd still be around the right dan after 350 games.

I’ve re-read the rules. Nagashi mangan IS a yakuman, the thing is that 8000 is the basic points for any yakuman, but since nagashi mangan cannot be won neither by ron nor by tsumo, multipliers are not applied to the basic points. And the sum players pay is divided as usual, 1× per non-dealer and 2× for the dealer.

Sometimes, I've accidentally queue'd up no realizing which lobby I was selected for. For example, after playing in a tournament lobby, the interface defaults to ippan immediately after. It's not something I normally check, when I'm used to defaulting in a higher lobby.
>>
>>15169277
But the real fuck up is pushing your yakuhai nomi with a shit wait. It's always tempting to go balls to the wall in extra rounds but you shouldn't be ignoring defence even if it would have won you the game.

He can't win off east. It's pointless. For him to change his rank, he needs 11,000 points on a ron unless third place deals into him. The highest possible value from winning off east is mangan (riichi, chitoi, two ura). If he tsumos, he can get third with a mangan or higher, although that would require haitei, or ura which would give him haneman.

Furthermore, even if he doesn't tsumo, it's possible the game will continue if east is tenpai, giving him another chance to improve his rank.
>>
>>15171647
Just to correct myself a little bit, he can actually tie with a mangan on a ron off someone else but third, but due to the seating order that would still end with him 4th. The only way he'd want to win off ron is if there were an extra honba or riichi stick, or if it were third who dealt the haku.
>>
>>15171647
>He can't win off east. It's pointless
It's double riichi so with ura he'll get haneman
Getting ura dora is more likely than drawing haku at this point
>>
>>15171700
Somehow I missed the double riichi. Whoops. Still, double riichi chitoi is only 6400 on ron. I can see him wanting to try for tsumo for the guarantee or just going into another round. It's not an entirely illogical choice.
>>
>>15171700

For manga, Mudazumo, Tetsunaki no Kirinji, or the rest of Akagi storyline (Ten, Hero). Then there's Janki/Shin Janki and Tohai live action. Akagi also has live action.
However, most, if not all mahjong manga/anime/live action tend to rely on bullshit logic & play. So if you want to learn, just play it over and over.

Kabe is essentially counting tiles, that you can see. That includes discards, the dora indicator, and your own hand. Then using that to infer the safety of discarding certain tiles.
>>

I think many people hit this point, like >>15174950 said, watching everyone else right from the beginning is good to keep track of kabe and almost kabe tiles. I used to just name each tile in my head as they were discarded but that's because I'm dumb

Most of the yaku are related to each other in some way. Like Chin/Honitsu, chanta/junchan/honrouto/chinrouto. You just pick them up by playing. The only really difficult thing to memorise is scoring, which there's no real shortcut for, other than the double fu = -1han thing

Count han, if it's not mangan then count fu. If you know the scoring table apply it, if not check it up. For most beginner players (provided you don't play offline) it's enough to have a vague idea of what score you'll get based off han. Just be aware that situations will eventually crop up where you'll need to know fu in the case of a comeback win or something.

I still haven't learned all of them. Junchan, honroutou and chinroutou just won't stick but I probably just haven't studied them hard enough. Doesn't help that they don't seem to pop up too often so I don't get to see the hands in play.

>>
>>15182014
>>15179177
Yeah, everything after that was unfortunate, but the chun was completely your own fault. When discarding at the start of a round, for efficiency, you should normally discard: no value wind>isolated terminals>yakuhai honors>isolated simples (as a rule of thumb, exceptions such as discarded pairs of yakuhai make them less valuable). You correctly played discarded the hatsu for 3m but if you were consistent you should have then discarded the chun for 7p, not 3m.

It's pretty easy to feel that tile manipulation occurs if you've played there for a while. Lots of ippatsu, rinshan, kan dora 4, fast and big hands. People going on long winning streaks. Not to say these things don't happen in normal mahjong either but in MJ they are much more common.

I'm not the only one who thinks so. MJ has gotten blasted on review sites by the japanese who also feel the system is rigged. I'm sure there's a number of people who have said the same thing about tenhou, since it has a paid version, but it's much easier to believe that MJ is, both through personal experience and through business models. Naturally, I don't have any hard evidence. If such a thing existed then they'd have gone out of business by now.

However, the difference between Tenhou and MJ as someone who has extensively played both is night and day. It doesn't help that MJ does not release seed data in their replays, meaning you can't see the wall's entirety. It leads credence to the idea that tile dealing in MJ is non-standard and thus more easily manipulated. The lack of hanchan, tenpai renchan, and so on also makes one think that they are trying to hide suspicious things behind a shorter number of games.

Coincidentally while making the program I memorized it and learned the formulas because I had to constantly expose myself to it to make sure everything was right. So I didn't finish because it was mostly useless.

tl;dr: Just keep exposing yourself to it, focus on getting certain yakus until it's just automatic.

At what point should one consider starting a new Tenhou account? In the past week I've gotten to shoudan in about 100 games, but after almost 10 straight loses (3rd or 4th place) I've lost most of my progress to 2nd dan from being one win away from it.

I'd like to get to a high dan and R but I don't know much about ranking up on here, is it reasonable to do so from here or should I just start a new one and try to fuck up less?

Until you can get to 4 dan, there isn't a reason to care. If you are 4 dan and significantly less than R1700 then it's time.

If you are at 100 games and are trying for Tokujou then you should probably abandon the ID anytime you fall below 1600.

Joukyuu has no requirements on R, but Tokujou takes 1800.
>>
>>15200923
Why are you playing mahjong? Because you enjoy playing mahjong, or because you want to hit next dan? Starting a new ID isn't going to make you any better than you are now.
>>
>>15200923
Keep playing. There's no point in making a new account if you can't even play in joukyuu. Going back to ippan will make you worse.

>>15201102
I agree but there are some cases where you should make a new account. For example if you are 4-dan and below 1700R with more than 1k games.
>>
>>15200923
R gains start dropping significantly after ~300 games, and the formula uses a flat multiplier starting at 400 games. So if you make it to 4dan but you are under R1700 with 400+ games, you should make a new account.

However, you should hit 4d first to confirm that you have the ability to do so. There's no point starting over until then.

Honestly I get so frustrated at some of the shit that happens in this game that I'd rather not play, but I can't stop myself from doing so. I guess I feel like I've invested so much time into both learning the game and playing in the past eight months that I don't want to quit without having at least something to show for it.

I mean, getting things like the rinshan tsumo or ryanpeiko is more fun than seemingly any other medium of entertainment available, but those things can only outweigh the other shit like getting dealt shit hand after shit hand, folding from the start only to still deal in to a kanchan hellwait when you run out of completely safe tiles, or not being able to double ron a guy with san ankou because you were going for suu ankou and you declined the ron not knowing that he dealt into another guy's hand and being unable to take back that decision even though you could with real tiles.

In any case, as much as it's frustrating, bitching about it won't make me not third-rate, so I'll just keep playing until I can gyakuten to second-rate.

You have to get over it eventually, you're expected to only win 25% of your games when you hit your skill plateau so getting upset at the tiles isn't helping anyone. Like other people said, if your R is stagnated (for example, if you played hundreds of games before you really knew what you were doing) then a new account will help that. But that doesn't affect your ability to dan up at all.

Other than the last hand which was just silly, my main gripe is in East 2, when you switched up your 36s wait for pair wait on the west. The west is pretty much only coming out from someone who is pushing (unlikely against three calls from dealer that looks to be at least mangan) or someone who gets a pair and runs out of safer tiles. While each individual west tile is certainly more likely to still be in the wall than each individual 3s or 6s, five tiles remaining definitely trumps two here.

It could certainly be argued that you should have pushed the 3s in East 3. Mangan tenpai with an OK wait and 3s doesn't look like it will deal in. But really, I can't blame you for not doing it, with there being no guarantee and the riichi is from fourth place. And then the 7p just looks like sheer death anyway. Don’t discard tiles that picture the reaper unless you have to.
I'm not sure about the worth of calling yourself out of iishanten for chinitsu in the first place, though. I've always been bad about making calls that won't reduce shanten (or even increase it like here!) even when it's proper, but in this particular case your shape is so very wide that my scepticism feels justified. 1234567m would all make you tenpai, some of them fairly good too, which feels a lot stronger than the ryanshanten for chinitsu.

Other than that, I don’t feel there’s a lot to worry about. I’m higher ranked than you but can’t say you made more mistakes than I do in any given game, if that means anything to you.

By the way I got a question : How does Mah-jong gambling works ? (When you play han chans with money as a reward)

Is it only the first rank player who gets paid by the others at the end of the Han-Chan ?

or do you have to pay each time you lose a hand by ron or tsumo ?

Yeah, it's hard to read. Better to just take screencap of the table.
>>15207264
There are lots of criteria. Normally it uses points (1k points = 100 JPY, for example), but it can use stuffs like
>ranking placement
>specific bonus yaku
>specific bonus tile
>specific calls
Each parlor has its specific rules, so learn that first.

It can be done different ways, some places have payment at the end of a hanchan or tonpuu with static rates for payment based on final placing, some have no rules on placing but rules that equivocate money to points (1000 points = $1 or whatever amount, for example), some also have rules where dealing into specific hands, or hands with specific tiles (like a red 5, 3 or pochi haku) is an instant payment in addition to the normal rules.

There's also the time-tested classic of equivocating points to CCs of blood and having any direct transfer of points between two participants result in either loss of blood or gain in millions of yen. It's a pretty good set up for a casual mahjong night between friends as you can probably tell.

Unrelated to the question but not going to just space it into two posts, but man, I'm glad I didn't fuck up and break up my ton ankou after running out of safe tiles. I usually do that in those kind of situations, but something felt ominous about my drawing of the third ton and his call on the Sha, and thankfully I made the right decision.

Are there any yaku you don't personally agree with?

I don't like how open chinitsu is worth 5 han, even though it's relatively easy to get. On the other hand, ryanpeikou being worth only 3 han is weird.

I mean after I discarded the 8p, 9p and the 4s that passed. I drew more live pinzu tiles, and from my perspective, the manzu I had weren't exactly the safest to deal against the shimocha or kamicha. There was also the chance of someone making another call, changing the draw order so that I have to make the houtei discard, and then me dealing in to what appears to be an open honitsu when it's actually a trap no yaku houtei tanki.
>>
>>15208885
I don't think open Chinitsu is "easy" to get. Sure, you can make a lot of calls and give yourself a crappy open hand, but then no one will deal into you, plus if you then need to bail you pretty much can't. Ryanpeikou seems like it should be worth more being rare, but it'll normally come with pinfu meaning it's at minimum 4h20f and a mangan more often than not. Like chiitoi it always gets 2 ura as well. Sankantsu is the only one I think is too cheap, but considering it can come with toitoi, yakuhai, or dora12 it's alright.

Hi, got a question here

When your hand is opened and valids no yaku whatsoever, are you allowed to call a win by tsumo if you happen to draw one of your winning tiles anyway ?
>>
>>15213703
I haven't lost a single game after getting 1 kyu until I moved to 2 dan 700~ points
Now I'm at 200 points and it feels like this shit is rigged, everybody is completing hands but me
>>
>>15213716
No, you don't have a yaku.
>>
>>15213716
You can't win without yaku
>>
>>15213716
You win -4000/-2000 instead.
>>
>>15213716
No, since your hand is open. The exception here would be hatei/houtei or rinshan. The former being the last tile from the wall tsumo or last discard Ron. Later being drawing your winning tile from the dead wall following a kan.

You could also Ron someone trying to meld a kan.

These are all unlikely ways a no-yaku hand could win my getting a yaku on the way you get your winning tile. Don't expect it to happen too often, and frankly a good noten payment would exceed the 1han value you would get
>>
>>15213718
That's exactly how I felt last month and instead of forcing it I just stopped playing and took a breather. It's not a matter of the game being rigged but its your mindset while you're playing. When the flow is against you of course you're gonna think that, but just know that that's how everyone feels. You're playing a kusoge and the kusoge's playing its part.
>>
>>15213876

Here are some observations:
- You keep too much pairs at times
- You disregard kanchan waits
- You kept an honor tile and discarded lone middle tile in E3. It's good to keep safe tiles at hand but consider that at the same time you're also shooting yourself in the foot by hindering your own hand development
- Your tile efficiency needs some more polishing as a whole

These are my observations, correct me if I'm wrong.

>I think you should've declared riichi
>Insta riichi.
I disagree. We're in first place by a decent margin and don't see a single dora, which makes being in riichi scary if someone decides to push. Adding to that, we can pon and discard 8m if anyone drops a ton, which if someone deals in increases our hand value beyond what we get with riichi, without being forced to discard the dora should we draw it. With toimen's chinitsu, there's a lot of potential around that we want to nip in the bud.

If we were in a more precarious position, then riichi seems more viable, although I'm not sure it'd be the better option even then, given how much stronger a ton makes the hand. If we're far enough behind to justify putting faith in the unlikelihood of uradora, maybe. But in this situation, let's preserve our position on top.

>>
>>15217340
I would probably have started betaori from drawing the haku. Your chances of gyakuten with that hand are essentially zero (Baiman tsumo, Haneman ron, even riichi iipatsu ron pinfu 2ura, the limit for that hand, wouldn't cut it) so just get out of it. Oya figured it out it seems.
