Someone mentioned MJnet in a previous thread, and how you can have private hanchan matches for free, so that motivated me to give it a try. I'll list some thoughts for anyone else who is interested in it.

1) The presentation is really nice. The tiles look great. Tiles get dealt by a hand and can end up a bit uneven on the table, the hand may straighten the pond, etc. There are flashy effects when someone wins a hand.
2) Play wise, there's a few convenient features, like having a shanten count in the lower right. When you reach tenpai, it shows you what your wait will be, similar to JRM. The game also gives you a lot of time to think if you need it.
3) There's customizable avatars and voices. That's always a plus in my book.
4) Is it free? Tonpussen, 3p, and private matches are. You earn free things via daily login, which can include free play tickets for ranked mode or one of the special tournaments. You can also earn 200 free chips by having a net score of +50 or more over 8 free mode matches, up to twice per month. (60 chips is the fee for non-free tables). If you get 1st in one of these modes, you don't have to pay. You also get a free 'gacha' once per day, which pops out bingo cards mostly.
5) Bingo cards are basically like quests in JRM, you get chips/items by completing them, but they're a lot easier. You can also junk them for medals to buy shop items. You can only complete them in ranked mode, but they appear much less demanding than a JRM quest.

Overall, I think it's worth checking out.
>>
>>14754585
I'd rather play this than JRM. If you guys ever have a room up I'll join.

Make it so it has open riichi and noten riichi.
>>
>>14754954
This. Also don't let it show your waits when you're in tenpai. That's fucking lazy on the part of the player
>>
>>14754938
Make it so that the client automatically quits once the user chombos.

You don't need to register a SEGA ID. If you download the PC version, it will automatically generate a username and password for you. You then choose your nickname.

Just make sure you write that ID and password down or take a screenshot of it.

But if you want to register for a SEGA ID anyway, here's a guide I found. It's for a different game but I think the fields are the same.

Region selection. I don't think that really affects anything (maybe matchmaking for connection quality purposes?), so I just default to Tohoku (東北).

Why is it that if two people have the same score by the end of the game they a get different amount of points?
>>
>>14769162
dealer priority?
>>
>>14769162
In the event of tied scores at the end of a game, then the tie-breaker based on the initial wind seating (or the first hand) may applied. The player closest to the dealer position takes the higher position. Afterwards, the final score procedure takes into effect. Even with tied scores, the player in the lower position will receive a lower uma score. Alternately, any oka and uma may be split evenly between the tied players, resulting in a shared placing. The specific ruleset in use determines how this is handled.

Is this a trick question? People only ever ask when it's a trick question.

2m just passed, so it's safe against toimen and shimocha. If kamicha is waiting on it then he must have either a kanchan or tanki. You can see three 1m and three 2m, so neither of those waits are likely. On the off chance he does have a 2m wait, his only possible yaku are tanyao (which rules out kanchan and dora) or chun (of which one is already out, and he'd more likely discard chun while defending than those manzu middle tiles which can be used for mawashi uchi).

1 sou looks like the obvious play, but you should consider the chance that A has a kokushi based on that board.

Since you won't get another draw you might as well just play the 2 man though.

So to get my friends into the game I created a casualized version and played it with them
>used cards from 4 decks instead of tiles, unnecessary cards are taken out
>winds are the J
>haku is the joker, chun is king of hearts, xia is king of spades
>no point system or restrictions
>allowed to call pon and chi without having to worry about hand value
>round continues until someone wins
>there is furiten rule

Its hectic and fun, allowing for the matches to be quite fast paced, but meant to be just an introduction

What can I do to slowly keep them getting more and more into the more complicated rules?

Simple memorization. All you need to do is be able to calculate the Fu and Han of your hand. There are plenty of score card graphics that take work out of the picture.
>>
>>14771851
You really only need to have a few memorized. Specifically the 30 and 40 fu values from 1-4 han for dealer and nondealer. As well as Ron vs tsumo.

Charts can help, but it's almost as simple as 1000, 2000, 3900, 7700
>>
>>14771879
>>14771896
So it's more efficient in the long run to memorize the charts rather than work everything out?
>>
>>14771851
I don't accurately calculate it but overtime I learned to estimate it more or less.
Basically, I'd know a low value hand with just a yaku is about 1000 points, and the hand's value always reaches a value where east would be able to pay 1.5 what the others pay. so if that step doesn't match, then I certainly fucked up somewhere.
I admit I mostly play with a 2 yaku minimum rule as well though.

There aren't 4 of any terminal/wind/dragon in play so you can't eliminate it.

A has exactly 1 terminal discard, which wasn't made until halfway through the hand. That isn't a normal pond so he is at least one of the following: an idiot, doing betaori after a failed Chanta, or trying for a difficult hand.
Based on the discards you can probably eliminate Chin Itsu which really only leaves Chanta (which he wouldn't have discarded the 78 sou so early) or Kokushi Muso.

As a result the board looks as though he was either full betaori (with some very odd discards to start the hand) or trying for a Kokushi Muso. Whether he made it to tenpai or not is irrelevant.

You don't know anything, but it's more you can't eliminate it, so there's no reason to push it especially when you have no way to reach tenpai.

Chances are the 1 sou is safe, but there is no reason to take the chance, especially since we know the 2 man is safe from A and B with C having already discarded the 5 man.

I'll continue to update it when I learn new details, but if anyone has any specific requests or questions, feel free to ask.

How about some game rules? Against the AI and the tonpussen freeplay mode. I know at the very least, it's agari-renchan, kiriage mangan, and aka-dora (1 per suit). Anything else? Primarily stuff differing from Tenhou.
>>
>>14776308
https://sites.google.com/site/mjnetguide/house-rules/4-player

I think you got most of them. Other big differences are Renhou being valid, no four riichi draw, kan dora showing up immediately, and no Pao.

Information is from the official site, but if anything ends up being wrong, let me know.

R doesn't mean much until you get near 400 games.

That said the regular dan lobby is a bitch for R. It's very difficult to keep above R1900, and if you don't make it to upperdan fast enough you can find yourself stuck in 4d 1700s purgatory.

I was just going for the more probable wait since chun was the dora indicator and I figured the last one was probably in the dead wall, or if someone had it they would hold onto it for dear life considering the lack of sangenpai discards. Shousangen with 6 dora was good enough for me. If someone dropped the red five it would be sanbaiman. I'd rather finish my hand than be stuck eternally in tenpai. I've had the latter happen way too often waiting on impossible shit.

Then again it doesn't matter since I constantly fucked myself over and completely established myself as the village idiot now.

By all rights you should've tsumoed the daisangen and put me in last. That 6p discard threw away a toitoi sanbaiman if you got 6p instead of chun, so I have no idea.

>Then again it doesn't matter since I constantly fucked myself over and completely established myself as the village idiot now.

No way, that's still Gogo, but we love/hate him for it. You just need to improve on your decision making a bit. Such as how you threw out the 4 pin right after that and went into a furiten wait on the 2 man. That was kinda bad.
>>
>>14780146
I was going for more waits. From my point of view there were four 5-pin and only two 6-pin which were probably being used in other people's hands.

>>14780187
I know, that was fucking retarded. I have a bad habit for playing too many games in one sitting and then I go and do stupid shit. I've learned my lesson, though.

Think about it this way.

5p and pinzu in general looks extremely dangerous against your discard pond. Neither 5p or 6p is likely to come out of anyone's hand. Why not go for the 50-100% more points and the glory of yakuman, especially in 7447?

Well, I haven't scored yakuman myself in a long time so you can take my words with a grain of salt.

Scoring yakuman.

It'll either require unconventional play (like dropping shanten), taking heavy risk (dropping danger tiles during bad situations), and/or being batshit lucky. On top of that, you'll have to appreciate yakuman opportunities, when they are far and few in-between.
>>
>>14783401
Yeah, but I'm never sure whether to bail or go for yakuman since there have been so many times where going for baiman or sanbaiman with a slightly better wait instead would have ended with me in first. Fucking mind games. I'll go for it next time.

>>
>>14784413
Not him, but

People in ippan have less R so you gain less per win and lose more per loss
You are fighting generally less skilled opponents.
You gain less points when you win and win no points when you come in second.

All of this is compared to lower dan lobby, of course.
>>
>>14784376
That was 7447, man
>>
>>14784340
If it's 7447 then that's perfectly excusable. But on the main lobby, it'd be pantsu on head retarded.
