From 1-4 easily the end of EP3. You spend the whole episode slowly getting sucked into Beatrice's lie and I fell for it hook line and sinker. Then you get to the end and Battler reads the contract and you think "oh fuck oh shit" and then nothing but ahaha.wav *cackle cackle*. Absolutely fucking amazing the first time round.

From Chiru basically anytime Dlanor is fighting, Kinzo's room in particular. How she spends most of the time being soft spoken and expressionless and it all fades away once she starts enforcing. I finished Umineko Ep. 1-4 (no PS3 patch) a long time ago (about over 6 years ago).

I finished Umineko Ep. 5-8 (with PS3 patch). I started in November 2015 and I finished today - February 2016.

I remember 4chan anons had some theories that showed up in Ep. 5-8. We solved the epitaph. We had a bomb explosion theory. We had a Battler Shannon pony theory. We had a Battler is Kyrie's real son theory. That's all I remember.

They never specify, but she seemed pretty old, especially considering she had cancer and IIRC there was a line in the VN about how she could have been even more influential had she become popular 10 or 20 years earlier when she was still healthier and younger.

Either way, Ange's growth as a character really hit home for me. Becoming someone successful and generally content and in peace with her life is such a huge leap from the suicidal and depressed 18 year old she used to be, it's amazing. I know it's corny, but when I finished the VN a few years back, it definitely made me change my view on life to a more positive one, which is funny considering I only got into the series originally for the memes.

I like how Umineko's witch have interesting quirks far beyond what should be expected from their title.

Lambdadelta is a cake and the witch of Certainty. Bernkastel is a cat and the witch of Miracle. They each have a name, a personality, a secondary attribute, and a title. They don't match.

In other works, anthropomorphic personifications tend to really look like their theme. But in Umineko the witch of Death would probably be made of clouds, called Stephanie, and a huge eater.

But their personalities match with their titles.

Lambda is the witch of certainty. Her power is "absolute power". She represents the 99.99%. She supports those who work hard and have absolute resolve (like Miyo) because in reality that's what you need to succeed with CERTAINTY.

Bernkastel is the witch of miracles. Her power is "endless reset". She represents the 0.01%. She supports the weak who fight in the face of impossible odds (like Rikka or even Ange) because in reality a MIRACLE is that's what you need in the face of impossible odds.

The characters.

Ryukishi may be a shit writer, but the man knows how to tell a story. None of the characters are good and none of them are evil. A lot of the characters in Umineko, are greedy and selfish and do despicable, horrible things, but Ryukishi somehow manages to make you empathize with them. He writes in a way that you understand where each character is coming from, and why they act the way they do.

It's what I appreciated the most in umineko, and something that I try to strive for when I write my own stories.

I've played Umineko twice, once with original sprites and one with ps3+voices, but there are just so many versions and tweaks of higurashi I don't even know where to begin with.

I thought that too but I personally think that the only reason he made Buttler look like Battler is to use Ange as an important unseen character in Last Season. It made the tragedy more personal somehow because you knew that if Butter was like Battler, there would also be an Ange, and it was funny that she was actually included in the story.

I also find it somewhat funny that the actor of Rika actually grows up as the story continues.
In Higurashi, she's about 10 years old.
In Umineko, she looks like a teenager.
In Higanbana, she looks in her early 20s, pretending to be younger, like those old tv school sitcoms where adults pretends to be teenagers.
In Rose Guns Days, she looks to be in her late 20s or in her 30s?
And in Hotarubi, there's a Rika character that looks to be in her mid 30s or early 40s.

For starters, ask if they played any adventure games, like Ace Attorney. See if it's something they already have experience with and if they enjoy at all or not.
Visual novels are still largely like books, but with pictures and sounds that can enhance the experience. I believe sound is an important element in horror and suspense, so a horror genre visual novel done right can exceed a normal horror story in plain text.

I agree with the other anon, start them off with Higurashi. They only have to read the first episode and they can decide for themselves if it's something they should want to continue and get into.

The first version looks fucking awful anatomy-wise though. I couldn't care less about whether they're sexualized or not (which is a funny complaint in itself since Ryukishi's original sprites aren't exactly chaste either,) but the proportions in the first one are noticeably off, especially considering it's professional work, so I can see why they changed it.
