Heck, we know the Order teaches that men are taken alive by monsters so that the monsters can kill and eat them later, so even realizing the monsters are avoiding killing them during a fight may not prove anything to them.

Indeed it is often only during sex that the genuine affection the monsters feel toward humans is finally communicated effectively to the human involved.
