Yaorochi pretty much attempted to revive the strongest sword in existance, and partially succeeded. She's are a youkai who's existence was created when Orochi was killed, from his arm specifically. Her attacks are pretty okay, though I just like the overall design and the chemistry between her and Sukune. She's Len'en 2's last boss.

The upgrade system is great and the barrier system really makes the game incredibly easy. I don't see how JynX would add a lower difficulty than easy after this. Really, BPoHC might finally be a way for JynX to branch out of the 2hu mechanics if it catches on enough with the fans. I'm really hoping it does, the flashbomb and barrier mechanic is just too damn great.

All 4 games. The 4th one is in demo only.

1st game has amazing feel, wonky design.
2nd game has a bit better design but fails overall to fix what the 1st did. Introduces the flash bomb which is a really cool mechanic.
3rd game has teams and an amazing 4th stage boss. Best design of the 3 games and overall great game.
4th one is a clusterfuck of awesome, good luck understanding it.

I think that anon's reffering to how characters change their mugshot facial expressions whenever they use another spell. I know that Aoji starts out a bit scared-ish and gets really excited as the fight goes on, or Shou who starts out cocky until she uses her last spell and looks panicky. Small touches that make it cool.

As someone with a musical background, I feel it's not ZUN-tier composition, but he still manages to compose catchy songs which makes up for the lack of complexity. My only other gripe with his songs is how poorly mixed some can get, such as EMS's stage 4 and 6 themes. Those trumpets are too loud. Overall, they get the job done and they're not awful, but not amazing either.

Yeah you are right. Literally no one gave a fuck about Touhou until EoSD, then it exploded out of nowhere into one of the most famous fandoms in all of otaku culture.

To be honest, I was surprised that very few had tried to make games like Touhou (pattern-based bullet hell shooters with all-female casts and fantasy settings) given the sheer popularity. That JynX had actually taken the plunge was what drew me to Len'en in the first place.

I had come up with my own Science Fantasy idea, but I don't have any art, music, or coding skills. That JynX is doing this alone for free is pretty nuts. Even ZUN makes money, and even if he didn't, he still has his fandom to give him motivation.

You're reffering to actual lore that's put into the series right? The Kusanagi sword's there, aswell as a different spin on Orochi's legend. The samurai-emperor Taira no Masakado also has a lot of input in the 3rd and this next game. The capital city of Mugenri is called Devanagara that also refers to the text of the same name and such... Just research it through the Len'en wiki and knock yourself out.

The idea was to combine 2hu with the traditional spaceship-focused shoot'em'ups. Each character had their own unique ship, and the whole setting was an alternate Science Fantasy earth. Also, the cast was split between men and women equally. The four main characters were pretty much:

-Hildegard Astra:Genki not-Sanae who's a flying savant; flies the Astral Valkyrie

-Nashara Daya:Aeronautical Engineer Rinnosuke (who lives with Genki Sanae); flies the Lunar Djnni

-Seijūmaru:Male Gamer DJ Suika; flies the Demon Grizzly

-Kōseiko Kyūen: Washed-up Disco Singer Ran Turned Amateur Pilot (lives with DJ Suika); flies the Jade Princess

Mugenri's an alright place. You can check the lore on the wiki honestly, he writes a lot. Spell card rules aren't enough to protect you and can kill you for instance. (But if you kill anyone, you're branded for literally everyone and they'd kill you for it.) Other random things I can recall include giant catastrophes daily, humans aren't cattle unlike Touhou's and Tsubarami creating small dimensions just for the spirited away humans to get used to their powers.

Knowing how this is going, this next game IS his EoSD. The only thing about the next games is that they can probably be PREQUELS according to him. Not sure how that's going to be either. So as it stands, EMS is the first actual incident solved since EE is the prequel to that and wasn't much of an incident solving, but more of an introduction to the whole series. No upgrades Hard mode for all routes first. I would go straight to Lunatic, but the stages are too random to go without upgrades, nearly breaking the game. Unless JynX nerfs the randomness, I'll stick to Hard.

Only found out about this today, holy crap the music is superb, some of it touhou-tier and even above.

I enjoy Len'en despite the janky stage design. The boss spellcards are perfectly fine, and some of them are actually very creative. Flash bombs are a good mechanic too, save for the rather broken effect that happens when Sukune fills her flash gauge in RMI.

I think most of the people bitching about Len'en are secondaries that don't even play shmups to begin with.

The insta-kill mode means that YOU die instantly from every bullet, no matter how much health/barrier you have left. Not the enemies. IIRC you gain currency 5x as fast when it's enabled, which is kind of crazy.

True, Yaorochi's screen slash when you fill the gauge up as Sukune's pretty absurd if you know how to abuse it and yeah, I can't forget secundaries around here are common. Insta-kill mode does grant you 5x alchool and 2 more starting lives.

The way I've always felt about Len'en was that the spell cards are wonderfully creative, Jynx is just...not very good at making sure they're balanced. If I had to compare him and ZUN, I'd say that ZUN is the professional who sometimes sticks within the boundaries too much, whereas Jynx is more willing to try strange ideas. When his ideas work, though, they REALLY work.

Dude needs to seriously work on his stage design though.

While I agree, you have to realize JynX doesn't have much experience. Not to mention ZUN's stage design is also sometimes questionable, specially in the PC-98 series. I'd wait for another game or two for him to do something better in terms of stages. Those backgrounds tho.

Hmm... In Len'en's case, the game needs some bug fixes and compatibility, as shown by >>14786017 for instance. In terms of gameplay, I'd probably fix the stages and balance the overall difficulty of certain bosses, such as Lumen on EMS being a lot harder than Hibaru, the following boss. Another thing would be to balance some shot-types. Tsubakura was too powerful in EE, but she's too weak now. I think she needs a bit of a buff. Same deal with Fumikado's shot on BPoHC. Other than that, it's all good.

Most likely. Update graphic drivers, run it with XP or 7 compatibility. BPoHC has an "Alpha" version where it fixes said lack of compatibility, but for the other 3 games, it'll only happen after BPoHC is released. Good Luck.

I had the same problem with my laptop. It's not a bad laptop, but it doesn't run 1-3. It runs 4 barely, crashing sometimes when bosses appear. JynX is aware of this so hopefully it'll be fixed soon.

On another note, he's been getting super worried about how long he's taking to release the game as much as fans keep telling him to take it easy.

Making game is massive process. There are so many things what needs to be done, what you don't even think about when you are playing one.

That's one reason we don't have many games like this to play. Most projects will end when developer burns out.

As someone who knows a thing or two about programming, I can imagine the work and workload he has. It is a huge, long process and honestly, when you think about it, he's doing a game that's at least 3 times bigger than any Len'en game. Granted, under a year too. Expecting this much under a year is a bit too much, hence why fans are telling him to chill since he has no pressure other than the one he himself creates for him. As long as you put a lot of honest effort into it, it should work out. Take a look at some of Popfan's solo work or how much JynX and ZUN smashed their heads on the wall to adquire that much knowledge. Just practice a lot of what you need and apply it on your game. The reward will be great.

I hope Len'en gets a little more popular. I like how it follows in Touhou's footsteps in that it's a pattern-based shooter with lore, unique characters, and named attacks. A lot of other Shmups are definitely harder or more fast-paced, but they're filled with so many over-the-top arcade special effects that everything just collapses into a blur, and they don't have the bullet or pattern variety of Touhou and Len'en (I'm watching someone play Mushihimesama and literally all of the bullets are purple). And they don't really have characters or a world to get attached to.

Call me a scrub, but I like how both Touhou and Len'en try to be more than just context-less twitchfests. I want the latter to succeed so it's not just Touhou occupying this subgenre of Shmups.

Best True Ending for a Len'en VN: Len'en MC existence is wiped completely, and all the memories of them and the game never happened. Len'ens go about their Len'en lives unaware they lost a friend.

It probably won't follow the same deal as most CAVE-style shmups. JynX sorta seems to want Len'en to keep being a shmup, but he's sorta been dissapointed at how people just memorize stages easily, hence BPoHC's playstyle. You probably won't see it changing much more than that. Side-games however, I have no clue. (Also, if you think that's bad, go watch a SaiDaiOjou playthrough with Inbachi. Visually impressive but worse than ABEX.)

Think about it this way: Youkai and Humans are about 50/50 in terms of power, but this isn't easily apparent. The reason being Tsurubami only cares about peace, which means she causes terror not only to Youkai, but to humans aswell, as seen from the Crown Stealing Sephiroth.
