First and foremost, you want two things.

1. Most importantly, 420+ fighter power at 5-5. This will allow you to get air supremacy at the first and third nodes, and air superiority at the preboss. Some people go one step further and aim for 520+ to obtain supremacy at the second node as well, but since you only have 4 Reppuu it's probably impossible for you.

2. Carriers that aren't simply Reppuu mules (i.e. they're carrying at least one bomber) should have their first slot carry a bomber, since the first slot is known to give extra bonus to critical damage if the plane is ranked.

With that said, this eliminates the first option as the maximum AS you can have while taking these two into account is 412.

The setup you're using shouldn't even be considered for 5-5; it gives only 400 fighter power.

The third option is also out because the only slow BBs worth using at 5-5 to require a CVL to avoid the night battle sub node are hotels. So this leaves the second option.

It'd be better if you had a CV with better slot distribution than Souryuu (eg. Shoukaku Kai would work better here). Do you have any other CVs? If not, then this setup is probably the best for you:

6 fast BB would have been easier back then as compared to now if the pastas had existed back then, too. And prior to plane ranks at least, CL + 4 Kongous + CV like that madman pulled to S rank 5-5 without support wouldn't have worked as effectively.

Is it worth trying to get a rare Destroyer from a drop or should I only concern myself with that after I have DDs and CLs at Kai Ni?
Specifically, I was after Kawakaze. But it seems like the only thing I'm accomplishing is raising the HQ level and now the subs actually strike back. S rank at boss is nearly impossible too because only the CL and DD deal any real damage to the subs.

Also there's not much of a point to stuffing a bomber in a larger slot at 5-5 anyway since there's no Tsu to worry about; the standard 18+ size slots are good enough. With AS instead of AS+ they'll just be more likely to get shot down so by the time you reach the boss you'll probably end up with even less bombers than if you'd started with 420. And with a larger bauxite bill to boot. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

For starters, there's ZERO difference in amount of bombers lost between 420+ and 385+ 33% of the time (when first node has one Nu) and 67% of the time it's negligible (because first node is irrelevant).
Yes, you'll lose more bombers overall and on specific slot - however, when you go for less AS, you will most definitely have more bombers overall at boss - because you start with much more. In case you have mediocre luck, you will use more baux but less fuel and steel. If you have average+ luck you will use less fuel, ammo, steel, buckets and similar amount of bauxite.

If you scratch with AP, DA in its place would scratch as well or outright miss.
With AP setup the chance for (AP + DA) is higher than with DA setup for (DA) so it's better choice for accuracy.

DA setup is only better vs enemies with zero evasion and low-mid armor.

With AP Shell setup the AP cut-in will always be more accurate that T32 Da but yes, the AP DA will indeed be less accurate than T32 DA. However have to keep in mind that AP setup gives you higher overall chance of special attak of 'some' kind, so overall accuracy would be a bit better as well. Not to mention most people have AP Shells at minimum +4 so they give +5 accuracy. Upgrading T32 is much harder.

That's why I said before - AP is definitely better when your ships aren't top tier. When they're all married, difference between AP and upgraded T32 becomes smaller (though I still consider AP to be better) because not disabling opponents with failed double attack is less of an issue because your ship actually know how to dodge. Most of the time you simply want to kill the enemy - and it matters little whether you do it with 170 cut-in or 110 + 120 double attack. Reliability of performing artillery spotting is of higher value and AP setup gives higher chance of it happening.

In reality, most if not all of the report bias you see against AP shells are from scrubs who tried them out in combined fleet and expected APCIs to have 99% accuracy.
