How's your mahjong life going?
>>
>>14378060
just found out i could have played washizu mahjong in my hometown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrOSC4O74Ms

also lost 150 rating from being last 6 games in a row
>>
>>14378060
Zero. I never could figure out the rules.
>>
>>14378084
Neat.
>>14378092
The Wikipedia pages explain mahjong in a simple and easy way.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjong#Old_Hong_Kong_mahjong
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku
Read those, play for a while, and then, after that, read an official ruleset.

Does tenhou have mobile support. I have no idea what this interface means
>>
>>14378132
There's a beta version that doesn't use flash.
The arcturus wiki helps explain the interface. It's not too difficult, I promise!

Just won 1st place 4 times in a row in Mahjong of Walkure. People seem to be a lot worse compared to Tenhou.
Too bad it'll be a long time before I see an H-scene.

At mahjong in general?

Reading stuff from the wiki and guides and such can only help so much, the best thing that helps me is just playing and learning from experience. As long as you know how to get Yaku you should be able to learn a lot just from playing semi consistently
>>
>>14378420
only thing i found out is that i might as well start going for tanyao every fucking hand. if i dont have any obvious higher points
>>
>>14378463
I usually go for pinfu if I don't have anything, since open tanyao hands are usually not even worth the effort anyway.
>>
Long ago, I would hate you for doing that, opening almost every hand and ending the game like that, but now, it just feels good to play again after so long.
>>
>>14378463
I think It's best to not call tiles unless you can for sure get some other Yaku. Closed hands are basically guaranteed Yaku because even worst case scenario you can riichi if you get tenpai.

>>
>>14379099
Actually, I had googled it, and I had found the same link, but it forced me to go to nutike or something because of reasons. Turns out I had to change the language to japanese to play the game, so no, you didn't "spoonfeed" me shit
>>

There was a Jojo mahjong somewhere, but I couldn't find it and deleted the picture that was my only clue

>>14378271
Play more. Know what your goals at the start of a round and play to those goals. If you see you are in danger and your opponents are ahead of you, then defend. Try to remember that you can't win every round. It's all about losing less and winning more big hands.
>>
>>14379179
I think it was just a computer game, I remember seeing it posted as well.
>>
Hey I'm learning and wanted to ask: if I have a hand that's open with one sequence chi'd for sanshoku, can I have the two sequences in my hand and Ron to win the round?
>>
>>14380511
Sanshoku is allowed open, yes.
>>
WTF IS THE MISTAKE?
https://youtu.be/uXMfEga-QF4?t=948

what did he do wrong ?

same on tenhou. sometimes i call tiles and i am not allowed to choose what i discard
>>
>>14381442
It's a rule called kuikae. You're not allowed to call on a tile and then discard a tile that would complete that set. For example, if you have 123, you can't chi the 4 and discard the 1 on the same turn. Or if you have 222, you can't pon 2 and then discard 2. If you have a shape like 234456, though, you can chi 3 with 24 and discard the 6.
>>

>>
>>14382597

Why have I never seen NET麻雀 MJモバイル mentioned here? Stupid long ass name. Net MJ for short, I guess? It's probably the best way to play mahjong on mobile and has a nice UI. It's also compatible with both iPhone and android (I think PC too) with cross-play.
I'm curious because my PC blew up recently and I've been looking into mobile clients and this seems best to me.

>>14384895
> implying that you intentionally get sanankou
And chiitoi is a simple yaku. Pairs often come in dozens, so all you have to do is to pick and feel lucky.
>>
>>14384895
You can get sanankou while open, and while chiitoitsu is hard to finish, you usually choose to pursue it instead on the ankous since its easier to fold with and may even retain its shape while folding.
>>
>>14385037
When I say fold, I mean defend.
>>
>>14385058
The way I play Chiitoitsu is pretty defensice anyway, you basically just discard whatever else is discarded the most to increase your chancess of drawing another pair
>>
>>14385360
In a way it's defending while hoping for the slimmest chance to draw the pairs of your remaining tiles.

>>
>>14386011
you dont get rating from those right ?

what do you need to do to keep your rating at 1500? like whats the required skill level and how do you attain it ?
>>
>>14386054
Yeah you don't get rating for private lobbies. As for everything else I don't know.

I just play as NoName, you can read this if you want to know though I'm sure it's in there
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/
>>
>>14386054
The formula for calculating how rating changes, which you can find on Arcturus, takes into account the number of games you've played and the average rating of everyone at the table. It has a decay built in so for the first few hundred games it'll move around a lot, so it won't be an accurate representation of your skill level.

Rather than aiming to maintain 1500, your goal should be to reach 4d R1800 so you can play in the tokujou lobby, and eventually 7d R2000 for the houou lobby.
>>
>>14386136
so how do i get better at mahjong

or more specific what are the skills i should study. i looked at tile efficiency and couldn't really find anything i wasn't alrdy doing.
>>
>>14386255
learn how flow works
>>
>>14386255
Tile efficiency is learning how to attack. Next thing to learn is how to defend. Then, when to attack or defend. If you just have a solid grasp of these basics, then you can make it to tokujou with enough persistence.

That said, I often find it the case that whenever someone says "I know that already" they probably don't know it as well as they think.
>>
How often do you open your hand? Lately I've been opening my hand a lot for yakuhai, also whenever I'm in the dealer seat I'll go for a cheap hand to keep it going. Sometimes I wonder if it's better to go for more valuable hands.
>>
>>14386409
I generally only open my hand for dragon yakuhai or something like toitoi. Or shousangen.
>>
12 games, 3 4th placings and no wins in my 2nd day as a first dan. I guess it's still a pretty decent result.

>>14386409
I open my hand for either bumping the dealer, calling a good hand (typically toitoi, chiitoitsu or yakuhai with a lot of dora) or trying to change the flow of the game.

I know the last one sounds retarded but that's how I do it.
>>
>>14386409
Firstly, ask yourself if, given what round it is and how many points everyone has, you should prioritize speed, value or defense. If the answer is speed, then consider how much speed you'd gain from opening your hand. Sometimes, your hand will still be slow even if you open up.
>>
why did this east only round continue into the south round. for a few games

i dont understand i was in first and suddenly i get into second because we have to play longer.

How dedicated are you guys to Japanese terminology? I use a mixture of jp and English names based on how they flow.

For example, "chanta" is super streamlined compared to "terminal or honor in each set", but fuck calling the winds anything but their English names.
>>
>>14397447
I don't use the japanese names for the winds because I can't remember any of them but pei, which is I think north. I call the dragons by their proper names.
>>
>>14397447

I remembered reading manga that used the jp names so I switch back and forth a bit :
N-Pei E-Ton S-Nan W-Xia

The dragons are:
Red- Chun White-Haku and I actually don't remember green
>>
>>14397447
I use complete Japanese terminology, including calling the number tiles with their chinese number

Stuff like calling the 5sou "uusou", or 9pin "Chuupin"

I figured anything less than this would mean being a worse player, like those goofs who don't even remember yaku names or call them with english equivalents.
Besides, anyone I would ever play mahjong with is either Japanese or a weeb just in virtue of knowing the game, so what's the point of showing ignorance by using english nomenclature?
>>
>>14397477
Green is hatsu
>>
>>14397447
I use all Japanese terminology in my head, but when I am talking to others I call winds by their English equivalent, and instead of saying shit like "ryanwan" I say "two-wan." It sounds weird but most people won't know what I'm talking about otherwise.

Memorizing winds is easy to remember if you know Japanese, since they all follow on-yomi except Xia (west).
>>
>>14397510
I use complete German terminology when playing Catan, including calling the resources with their German names.

Stuff like calling the brick "Mauerziegel", or wood "Holz"

I figured anything less than this would mean being a worse player, like those goofs who don't even remember the whole instruction manual in the German original or remember the English translation.
Besides, anyone I would ever play mahjong with is either German or a euroboo just in virtue of knowing the game, so what's the point of showing ignorance by using English nomenclature?

Hey /jp/ so I come from a family who primarily plays a chinese variation of mahjong that never uses scoring (no weird colored pieces, no seasons/flowers), where can I read about this? I tried playing a flash thing about richi mahjong, but I kept getting some thing like no multiplier when I think I win.
Basically what situations would result in you not winning?
>>
>>14410427
google yaku
>>
>>14410427
>Basically what situations would result in you not winning?
You're asking from the wrong perspective. You should ask "what situations would result in you being able to win?" The answer to that is of course the yaku which were likely displayed at the bottom of the flash game played.
>>
>>14410427
The wiki is helpful:arcturus.su

I'll condense the basics of winning though for the hell of it.

Basically how you win is you need 4 melds(runs of 3 numbers or triplets) and a pair, there are a couple exceptions to this but generally that's your hand set up. Additional you need to have at least 1 Yaku for your hand to count, this is the first thing you should learn check the list on the wiki. An additional point about winning is if you've discarded a tile that could have been a winning tile (not just the tile you use to win any that could complete the hand) then you can only win by drawing your tile, not off of other players.

>>14410949
Make the hands last, unless you have one of those fancy automatic tables
>>
>>14410949
Riichi?
>>
>>14410949
I suggest watching a YouTube video about setup. Online/electronic mahjong does this automatically so your exposure is null. Keep in mind that aside from the direction of the tiles you draw, everything is counter clockwise.

Also, don't try fancy hand tricks with your tiles, they'll go flying everywhere.

Here's the good news: since you're irl, there's not going to be an annoying timer so take your time choosing your discards
>>
>>14410949
Pre-mature riichi is a lot more intimidating in real life.
Also, it's a lot easier to read the atmosphere of the table
>>
>>14410949
if you feel the flow, riichi
>>

>>
>>14411096

I don't like it
>>
>>14411096
Hong Kong and Taiwanese. It wasn't until I played those that I realized how much riichi has going for it strategically. There's no strategy or pressure in those variants. It's pon palace the game.
>>
>>14411111
Have you guys heard the Filipino version? I heard its similar to Taiwanese but when i watch people play it seems more intense and requires more strategy to "sagasa" your opponent. Idk ive only really played Filipino version but i would like to try different ones of course.
>>
>>14411048
Yes Riichi
>>14411052
Oh, I didn't realize that the direction of the tile that was on the side indicated which player it was taken from.
>>
>>14410949
You're not bound to organizing your tiles a certain way so do whatever is easiest, but keep in mind others are watching closer when you discard, so it might be better to put honor tiles in the middle rather than on the rightmost area, and have your next discards ready on the rightmost instead before you turn comes up so you give up the least info possible.

Also, for advanced mind games, flip tiles upside down for no reason, even if they look identical right side up or upside down. If players pay attention to that, you can fool players into thinking you have certain tiles when you really don't.
>>
>>14411472
Also, if you're left handed make the left side your most active side. That way, you discard faster, and there's less chance of knocking over tiles and embarrassing yourself.
>>
>>14411052
>Also, don't try fancy hand tricks with your tiles, they'll go flying everywhere.

This is weird as fuck. Not only are all the points in money, but the scoring is weird too. Having a single closed kan is worth as much as a chinitsu.
>>
>>14411296
I slightly know how to play it. It's pretty straightforward when I played it and calling is way more often than closed hands. There's this thing as well where we discard the honor tiles called "flowers" in the beginning of a match and if you discard 13 flowers by the end of the game you end up with more money. It's made for gambling.

Anyways, the fun thing is that some fan are worth less than 8 points, and some fan are worth more than 8 points, but you need 8 points to declare mahjong.
Thus you aren't stuck waiting for one fan worth many points if you know how to combine multiple low-points fan.

I haven't fully learnt jap mahjong yet, but this is literally the same conclusion that i came up with. It seems so luck based, and it seems like the whole point of it is money and gambling. I want to play a game that is about the fun or strategy/mindgames, not just "hurr I win if the guy at 东 doesn't", and the games don't revolve around reaching the 7th to last tile as a win condition.

>It's even more probability-based than most gambling games like poker and blackjack
Yeah, no.

>>14414624
Obviously if you don't really know how to play the game and are only playing newbies, you'll think that way, especially if you have alot of experience with poker. Poker is just quicker to learn and its much quicker to finish a round or even leave a game, while for mahjong, you're expected to finish all four dealer turns the same number of times or it wouldn't be fair.

I'm just assuming he doesn't know how to play like you said. What really got me is that he thinks blackjack is less probability based than mahjong. You have to be a class-A kind of retard to seriously believe that.

B-b-but haven't you seen serious Blackjack tournaments where the best card counters of the world gather and see who is the best strategic mastermind in the world of blackjack.

Oh the old mahjong vs poker discussion. Personally I believe much closer to chess than poker, hear me out.
I play mostly riichi, and unless a player has a specific leak which is painfully obvious, I see no reason to ever adjust my play according to their style of play. To clarify, I do try to take into account score differences, possible hands being made, all the information available to me. However what I don't believe is that it's worthwhile to observe a player and tailor my play to counter a certain playstyle. This leads me to think that mahjong is closer to chess, where the only way to evaluate a situation is pure objectivity, than, say, poker, where past history is a very real consideration.

When I play with friends, I am much more likely to adapt to specific players and their styles.
Like how my friend adapts to my style, and always has the most bullshit waits that make his hand not as valuable, but I end up playing into because why the fuck would you wait on that 3 man

True if you play with at least good to very good players, if you play with new or intermediate players observing how they play can be a pretty decent advantage, though, as they might make some habitual mistake that you can profit from if you know them.

This playing stile will more often bite your friend in the ass than it helps him, though. Waiting on less tiles is rarely a good idea, because even if you wait on tiles that look safer, there is still the possibility that the tiles you need are in the dead wall or that your opponent continues to play offensively anyway. Personally the only instance where I actually consider how safe my wait looks is when I utilize a suji trap. A Kanchan or penchan wait becomes much more usefull when it's suji, so this will often make me call riichi with such a wait, which I might not do otherwise.

Depends what play style you are going for, if you are playing for "not last place", then playing in such a way that traps players who run out of tiles makes sense.

>thinking chess is objectivity
I have news for you: most of the current chess masters do not play the board.

>my hand is a mess, trying to beatori

>sweating bullets
>out of nowhere, all tiles revealed, get paid 4000
>won the game because some dipshit chombo'd on a furiten tile
