I also love the idea that she's a dragon youkai. Those seem to be amongst the most powerful type of youkai that exist. Gensokyo's most popular deity is a dragon living high up in the sky. That dragon is said to have had a hand in creating Gensokyo's barriers seperating it from the rest of the world (Yukari didn't create them by herself, she said at one point).

So I assume dragon youkai have barrier powers. If Meiling's a dragon youkai, she might've been the one who transported the SDM into Gensokyo. It doesn't seem like something Remilia, Patchouli or even Sakuya are capable of doing despite their crazy powers. Which leaves the mysterious Meiling.

It's a bit of a shallow analysis because the Tarim basin wasn't part of China at the time. Those people were complete foreigners - they were white and spoke an Indo-European language. I like to think thats why Patchy summoned Koakuma, rather than leave her library she summoned a demon to keep Flan company.

The thing is that there's enough evidence either way to support both sides. Its entirely plausible she is a dragon, and equally as much that she isn't.

While it isn't outright stated that she's a dragon, trying to forcibly say she's that low on the food chain sort of just says "Fuck you" to most of her theming.

When one looks at the huge disparity in power levels in Gensokyo, Meiling's can appropriately be called a small fry; she's a 3rd stage boss; not yet still a warm up for dodge, but the final threshold before things start to get hard. IMO, her story fits the gameplay.

I don't know where you're pulling this "theming" out of, but man, if you can't appreciate her for being the "mildly incompetent gatekeeper/last boss before shit gets real" that she is, why even bother with Meirin? It's basically exactly as >>14384647 says

For most of that, i would say that being a dragon would set her at mid tier, if nothing else. Higher than the average mook, not a full on authority like remi. Thats actually what i was just thinking. Most people assume that meiling being a dragon automatically makes her a dragon god in these arguments. Hyperbole at its best. Being a dragon, however, does permit for a certain minimum level. Especially if she's the type that went through the dragon gate since that shows a great degree of willpower. All assuming she's a dragon of course.

My train of thought is that her situation is somewhat similar to sakuya's. We don't know shit about either, really. Only how they interact with the rest of the SDM crew. Perhaps meiling has something to hide, or simply doesn't want to show a full display of being a dragon. For all we know, sakuya could be lunarian and we let that slide, but as soon as someone mentions that meiling might be an actual dragon, people lose their minds. Its a bit of a double standard, really.

Honestly, most of the time i argue this its as devils advocate. I don't particularly care either way. I respect meiling for her abilities as is, not some theoretical dragon power. I just don't like to see people outright deny the possibility, simply on basis of what she did in EoSD. I mean, yuyuko was a stage 1 boss, that doesn't determine her power though, right?

And if either of the fightan are anything to go by, she's perfectly capable of holding her own against people of a higher stage value. Mid tier is a bit higher then you are giving her credit, since half the cast are outright cheaters.Besides, my appreciation of meiling is the same, dragon or not. It can be applied to literally anything, and still mean next to nothing. Arguing carries value in and of itself. Now those I cant argue against. But I would say those are some of the top powers. Like 98% of othe stuff cant compete. The 1% being Reimu's invincible power to just phase out.
But there are lots of far less useful powers, and I would say Meiling is above average.

But it's a bit like Jojo powers, it's all about creativity. If used right a seemingly weak thing could be above average (survivor), while a strong thing can be utter shit if the writer wills it (Star Platinum and The Hand).

They used to be large metal balls, not hollow, so most martial arts avoided their use due to the insane strength needed to use them.

Not completely hollowed out. Just enough to make them usable. Think of it like a couple welded together cast iron skillets. Still pretty hefty, despite not being solid.

As for jao, i'll be honest, i'm not sure. Its a sound attributed to meiling, most commonly when she does her sky dragon kick. I dunno where it originated though.
