I honestly don't even know if that's the correct term to call them. What I'm looking for is those small river-like bodies of water with human built elevations on either side with stairs, grass etc. They're very prominent in Anime and Manga.

One of my friends became really depressed after coming back from Japan. He fell really hard for the country.
He wasn't even a weeb, he just went for the novelty.

Looking at photos from there fills me with some sort of nostalgia from a place I have never been in. I don't think I could handle loving the country and then being forced to leave it. Also citizenship sounds impossibly hard, specially for a neet like me.

Those are called kasenshiki 河川敷 in Japanese and yes they exist. In tokyo there are many such places along the arakawa river especially (e.g. Kita senju, akabane, kawaguchi, etc.).

I've always loved the power cables and pylons that run all throughout metropolitan and suburban Japanese neighborhoods

Japan have the cleanest streets I have ever seen, Cleaner than Auckland and Istanbul. I haven't been to Germany to tell but I heard from people who have been to Paris that it is dirty. From the places I have been Tokyo was the least clean but still pretty clean specially considering the huge amount of people and that there are many people from countries where litter the street is normal.

Why do japanese suburbs have these tiny streets with no pavement? We have seen that in countless shows over and over again. Streets so tiny that only one car fits in, and there are also people on bikes and normal pedestrians using the street, little kids run around an play. Isn't that dangerous? And why is it possible to go on the roof of schools and every other large building? Why isn't it possible in the rest of the world? What's up with the tiny amusement parks on top of the shopping mall building? You know exactly what I am talking about, why only in Japan? Isn't the bell thing because most of their schools follow the same blueprint? In most schools in my country we have the same bells in every school too. I don't know why however a lot of schools tend to be really old and I guess instead of upgrading bells everywhere they just stuck with the ones that were already used in schools and implemented them in the newer schools as well. My first school basically hadn't changed since my parents went there. I think the school turned a 100 years old while I went there and they had photos hanging from way back where it looked nearly identical from the outside.

I think that a lot of the people 'pining for the rice fields' here have probably never left there home country, let alone been to Japan.
It's a nice place sure, with some very picturesque rural and urban scenery. But it's just like any other country, you're there for a little bit and the magic starts to wear off. Then it's just like anywhere else.

I'm comparing to third world countries. If there is something that third world countries offer is tropical fruits and brown sluts. There is also the chance of working your ass off in a third world country while the local population slack off so you can get in the elite. Since economical disparity is pretty big on third world countries you can get to some pretty good life even compared to first world but this also means that you and your family will be the target of hordes of criminals. I would rather have a middle class life in Japan and not have to worry about my son being kidnapped than being rich in a third world country.

Are you going using some JET-type system, or have you managed to find a school that'll take you on your own?
I'm planning on teaching English for a few years after getting my bachelor, but I'm not sure what would be the best way to actually land a job in Tokyo. Not that I'd mind other places, but it would definitely be more convenient. I've already seen a lot of countryside Japan anyway.

It's been 3 years since I visited and I still nostalgia trip hard. I went through all my albums again and I thought I'd share one of the highlights from the trip.

We took a tour with some Japanese college students small trip that included a small sake distillery in a small town near Lake Biwa. I was only a baka gaijin then, so I can't say what town.

We stayed at a ryokan near the shore and basically just ate and drank. Nothing terribly interesting, so I guess I'll end with my breakfast the following morning. I'll stop dumping now, but if anyone had more stories from Japan, I'd like to hear more.

The pictures definitely make it seem like a nice place but I feel as if it would be like anywhere else. The magic would wear off eventually. Who knows, I'll probably never be able to afford to go explroe all the nice places in the world, let alone Japan. It can't be helped I guess.

The nice thing about Japan is that it is a temperated country so the landscape is always changing with the seasons, unlike Europe or America the forests have a higher diversity of trees (this have to do with the lack of barriers in the ice age that avoided the extinction of many species) so their forests are diverse making it multicolored and thus prettier. Also it is a volcanic country giving diverse terrain and mineral rich volcanic soil. On top of that most of the country is covered in forests so no matter where you are, just take a train and soon you can get to a beautiful place.

That's why so far Japan is my favorite country. I can live close to a big city with all the conveniences a big city can give me but also easy access to nature with constantly changing landscapes so I never get bored of them. Enjoy the bloom of the cherry trees in spring, on summer enjoy the sea and also I could go to a fruit farm and eat fruit as much as I can for a small fee, on autumn the trees are vibratong with many colors and on winter there is the snowy scenery depending on the region.

New Zealand have beautiful scenery but lacks the comodities of mega cities. Even their biggest city doesn't give me a big city vibe. United States seems to have beautiful autumn colors accoding to internet pics but also according to what I heard everything is far away so you have to use a car and go far away to have a change in scenery. Canada lacks the multicolored autumn and also loli ban is stupid.

On top of all that I can use a bicycle to go everywhere on my daily life, something that improves my health considerably. I know that Japan is not the best for everyone and maybe there is a better country for me but I still haven't found anything better so far.

It depends, the first picture would cost about as much as a small two bedroom apartment in Tokyo. Here in Japan, in the countryside houses are really cheap because people want to sell them and move to the city. No one wants to move to the small towns.

I'll be going up to Niigata in March for a month or so, and the whole house I'm renting (3 bedroom, 2 bath, full kitchen/living room and an "off-limits" historic portion of house) is 40,000yen for the month. I'm trying to convince my buddies to come out so it's even cheaper.
