AV doesn't really pay well since there's a huge pool of reasonably attractive women in Japan who're willing to do it for whatever reason, so almost every chick can be replaced by the production companies.

I'm sure they'd pay mad money to get someone like Saaya Irie or Ai Shinozaki to do AV (seens those videos would sell like hotcakes), but top level gravure idols get TV and music contracts, AV companies can't compete with that. The only way those idols would ever even consider AV is when they get too old for gravure (mid-late 20ish), didn't succesfully make the transition into mainstream showbiz and have no regular life job as a backup plan.
