It's a psychological trick. The park partially blocks the vision of the other side, tricking the American mind into not realizing that they are driving through a roundabout, otherwise they would just freak out.

My 80 year old grandma got stuck in the roundabout for 15 minutes before she finally managed to exit. Just going in circles lol
