I've never been shot or mugged (or even seen these phenomena) desu, but I've heard many stories of friends and family being robbed, threatened and things akin.
Most people are really wary around here. Avoiding certain places and going out on certain times, carrying spare money so the knife-wielding crackhead can quickly go away and etc...
I live right beside one of the most feared neighbourhoods in São Paulo and I'd like to know why no one has taken my mobile phone or my money yet. It's surprising, really. Everyone around here fears for their lives and belongings.
