They used to gain a lot of support until the 70's because people were dissatisfied with having the same centrist party in government since the end of WW2(Christian Democracy). Once that monopoly ended they started fading away and the end of the Soviet Union caused them to be utterly BTFO by Berlusconi in the 90s. Since then they have reformed into """democratic""""" socialists/neo-liberals and have been currently been in governemnt(not by will of the people) since 2011 if I remember correctly. They would gain very little support if they went back to actual marxism but it's still unsettling to have former commies as our leaders and the people are starting to reject them in favor of M5S( post-ideoligical populist liberal movement) and Lega Nord( pseudo-nationalist populists)
