I remember had read that the portuguese was consider beautiful and noble language in the middle age (at least in the peninsula). The castilian king Alfonso X "the Wise" made tons of poems and songs in galaico-portuguese just because of that, he also made books in castilian but it was more about history, grammar and other stuff artistic, nothing artistic.
