In the 90s people when people claimed what Snowden said they were portrayed as loonies.
But when Snowden shared his information everyone pretty much pretended they already knew all that. "Didn't everyone know that already?" And just waved it off.

Privacy is your first line of defense against authorities. America has none.
Democracy is your second line of defense. America only has two parties with any chance to rule. And the supreme court is elected by political parties.
Your guns are another proper defense, but apparently nobody cares to use them when your government shits all over your constitution and it's mandate. So that one isn't working.
