Suburbs are cancer. I'm glad that my city's geography more-or-less prevents them.

Still have a bit, obviously, but the largest subdevelopment of McMansions we have is two blocks wide. They don't look too bad when it doesn't have the footprint of a small city.

This. What those suburbs are missing are cafes, shops, parks, schools etc.

Heavily populated middle-class zone with no large perpendicular lanes is nothing unusual in big "European" cities
What you'd be hard-pressed not to find would be sidewalks, bus stops and small shops/infrastructures

USA didn't have the suburb problem until the autobahn was planned.

We had cars but urban/suburban planning didn't reflect that until the 1930s.

>Where do you think that development stems from?

I wonder

>Due to the rapid migration of the rural poor to the industrialising cities of England in the late 18th century, a trend in the opposite direction began to develop; - newly rich members of the middle classes began to purchase estates and villas on the outskirts of London. This trend accelerated through the 19th century, especially in cities like London and Manchester that were experiencing tremendous growth, and the first suburban districts sprung up around the city centre to accommodate those who wanted to escape the squalid conditions of the industrial town.

I am selfish because I would like to have my own yard? You can go and live crammed in a little apartment building, i had to do that for most of my childhood and moving into suburbs was a huge improvement.
In the future I plan to get land in a rural area to have even more privacy. Obviously this type of living is not for everybody, if you feel the need to go to a cafe every morning and have dinner at restaurant every friday then it's probably not for you.

I always thought grid suburbs are for working middle class in the US, there are always organic planned communities but mostly are for the rich? However, I think this is the distinction between Europe and the US; you can buy a large house, large useless suv and still be a mid level employee while this is reserved to upper middle class and above in Europe, and so they don't have the cheap big house option that exists in the US so they are comparing their more close knitted city apartment and detached houses lifestyle with something that doesn't exist in the EU due to many reasons including economical and spatial.

>Rural Areas: Large green belt, traditional architectural styles, system of comfortable villages mixed in between forests and fields, attempt to use natural materials (stone walls as opposed to corrugated iron fencing)
>Urban Areas: Georgian Terraces, wide streets and large parks for recreation, arterial roads rather than a grid system (too robotic and ugly), city boundaries marked by purposely antiquated city walls, more ceremonial than practical
>Central Business District: Soviet Classicism, Roman Imperial, Italian Renaissance, French Renaissance and Beaux Arts for the skyscrapers (pic related)

we could have this world if we try
>>
>>79236683
why are suburbs all done with the same style? where are shops? where are squares? where are parks? where are people?
>>
>>79241260
There are different suburbs. Its not like suburbs are just mass produced identical houses. Some are for poor people with shit houses and others are for really rich people with nice houses. For example if you compare the suburbs of San Fernando with Beverly Hills there will be a big difference.

Yeah that's my point, there are options for every lifestyle and budget in the US, while it doesn't to the same extent in EU, perhaps since EU isn't a singular housing market like the US.

What's with the single-use autism that defines communities like this? Surely, peppering the community with a few stores and restaurants here and there as well as parks wouldn't hurt anything. I love driving, but I don't see the appeal of having to enter a congested six-lane "street" to do anything, and you don't even get the benefits of slowing down and having a lot of things to look at that typical city streets provide.

Have you ever stepped in an actual suburban area? I know its hard to believe but one snapshot doesn't really show a whole neighborhood.

>>
>>79241175
its actually this.

i remember when my dad was teaching me how to drive, he gave me the wheel at lake tahoe up in the mountains and said, "get us to san fransisco". i had no problem going down the crazy hairpin turns out of the mountains. passed through the outskirts of sacramento (which was deserted because all the greencards went home) and got close to san francisco. suddenly the driving got completely, impossibly clogged out of nowhere. mustve taken me two hours to drive into that godforsaken place.

the next time i went there i was with my friend on a motorcycle. he picked me up from the airport and i was dreading having to sit on the back of the bike for hours as we passed into oakland. little did i know that lane splitting was legal out there. shit took about two minutes and scared the ever loving christ out of me. but i know if i ever went back there, id get a bike and cruise around like i owned the place. its the only way to deal with the fucking impossible traffic.
>>
>>79236683
>tfw eurocucks will never know the infinite juvenile pleasure of getting 30 of your friends at a party in one of these housing tracks to go skinny-dip raiding across every strangers pool in your neighborhood, then running naked through the copy-paste streets like the umman manda, and hiding under some cucks porch to ditch the cops

suburbia offers nothing but what you put into it. it is a barren wasteland, to be sure, but with a big enough crew, you can find something to do.

low countries are both high density and quite flat (hence the name) which ensures that pretty much everywhere is an acceptable place to plant yourself a house

which means that a lot of people figured out "if I build next to this connecting road I can live outside of town, but still have easy access to everything I need", kept building outwards from the various towns until they met in the middle so to speak, and then the road gradually filled up with other homes
also helped that it was usually re-purposed farmland so a lot cheaper to buy than property in or near towns

at this point it's entirely possible to drive from one town to another and never realize it until you take a side road and find yourself in the middle of farmland

well you try, but then the farmers protest because they still have farmland in between, there's a couple of tiny ass forests that are protected (low countries are densely populated enough 5 trees and a shrubbery officially constitute a forest), a great war bunker that's historical oh and the zoning happens by the zoning is done by the region, the road by the province and the environmental licenses by the federal government

and all relevant parties have measures in place to individually delay any action by at least a decade if they don't get what they want

>>
>>79243578
oh brother, you'd think so but no
belgium is already a bureaucratic hellhole for regular citizens, massive construction projects on the other hand

to give you an example, 20 years of planning for a shopping conflict was recent completely undone because it was discovered that part of the existing parking lot it was going to be using was in fact build over what was technically a road

now said road was paved over in the 1960's, and even back then it was considered so obscure nobody gave a fuck it was paved over and all of it could have been avoided had someone put their signature on the documents back then

but one major of one small town nearby didn't want the shopping mall so they dug until they found that technically there was a road going straight through their construction lot which he had control over and had the entire project cancelled

and that is most notably NOT considering all the province level governments

Now that I'm older (and no longer brainwashed by all the happy go lucky stuff we were taught in school) I understand why humans fight over land.

Habitable land is a precious resource. Fertile land to grow food is a precious resource.

The reason East China is so highly populated, of course, is because it's such fertile land, perfect for growing lots of food. And therefore the Chinks had enough resources to grow their population.

Every country and culture have something that they want and is selfish. Land has been a big thing since the beginning for Americans. It will continue to be the case.

If it makes you feel better, the new generation prefers urban centers, so there you go.

also, like I already mentioned. These residential communities are surrounded by small stores, malls, parks, coffee shops, schools, etc.
Just because you get to see a trippy image of newer residential projects, doesn't mean that they don't have any of those things around. The picture is framed to make it seem trippy. Not to show you the actually comfiness of living like that.

America doesn't have "shops" the way a European thinks of it.

America has 5 to 10 large suburbs that all funnel into one mega shopping center, too far away for walking. These box stores specialize in volume, and sell things in massive quantities, meaning you need a large house to store it all, and a large car to transport it all, and large roads to handle the traffic.....etc.
>>

I do agree with the car dependent things. But at least the neighbors where I'm from are not shoddy, and they aren't short term either, as many suburbs have existed for decades now. Some since the 50s and 60s when everything started.

Just because the US isn't a European copycat doesn't mean that it isn't fitting for it's people. Either get off the proxy or move to Europe.

>precious landscape is sold off to a developer by corrupt city council
>mass produces identical-looking houses made of cheap particle board.
>New suburb hits the market, young families rush in
>Eventually kids grow old, start to leave
>Neighborhood grows dark, dreary, no kids in the street, nobody ever goes outside anymore
>Houses slowly start getting sold off to college students and illegal immigrants
>New residents stack 20 people to a house, sleeping on couches, in the garage, on the floor.
>neighborhood has reached the end of it's life cycle, property values drop, eventually becomes a mini barrio
>>
>>79249419
This not even the average suburb
Most suburbs are not built in the middle of a desert but rather outside of big cities that are eventually (as the city grows) integrated into the city.

Most florida "suburbs" have just developed into huge metro regions, like the rest of the USA. Most "suburbs" and residential space is in this places.

You can obviously see that there are small business all around the residential places. The only bad things being the high way ruining the image of the neighborhood.

I admit that the car dependent design needs some reworking.

But again, this isn't as bad as you make it seem. Where people need to drive half an hour just to get some milk. You can see in the pic people can bike to the nearby business or even walk ( a somewhat long walk mind you.)

This is where I used to live when my father worked in the US.

Us Europeans shouldn't be fooled. When you're middle class in the US, it's like you're king of the world. You're destined to live in a sprawling house you'd think was a mansion in Europe, and you can litterally live five minutes from the sea without paying too much for your house.

First, the US is ONE country, not many.
They all speak the same language, not like Europe.
The US as a whole has a shared experienced, with only minor differences.

Why do you expect neighborhoods in the same country to look just as different as a neighborhoods in different countries? Florida and Georgia are basically the same thing. Same language, same country, Same overall culture. Small differences here and there, but most are modern states with modern architecture. They don't have medieval castles or shit like that to claim uniqueness.

These small European countries had thousands of years with borders of their own to develop these small differences. The US is ONE country. You are expecting US states to have cultures as different as countries in Europe. That makes no sense.

What's worse is that Americans seem intent on spreading this homogenized consumer culture over to Europe.

Get it through your skull that the US isn't Europe and never will. Euroboos like you are the worst. Because you think Europeans have something figure out that the US doesn't simply because their towns are old as fuck.

The level of cultural diversity that we had in the medieval ages or further back doesn't not exist anymore, and the continued spread of a homogenous global culture will continue.

The West Europeans started it, and the US will have a big part in setting that global culture.

You can continue wiping and masturbating to these old towns but they are nothing but tourist attractions. They are dead. The future are not these shitty towns, but huge metro areas.

Sorry Euroboo. You lost a long time ago.

Extremely excellent posts anon. I too have spent a lot of time thinking and wondering about this sort of thing. Capitalism is just mass focused, nothing of quality is valued just quantity. Since America is almost entirely developed in Capitalist era it's just soulless cultureless mess. The new stuff in Europe is also garbage, but at least they have the heritage and remnants of pre-capitalist civilization. I don't necessarily agree with far right reactionaries, but Evola pretty much hit the nail on the head about modern capitalism and America. Though I'm not a Marxist either. I wish a new economic system would come.

I wish I was born European. Some day I hope to move to a place like Prague, but I'm not super skilled college educated person so there isn't much hope.

those houses next to the highway have lower land value, so in order to sell them they lower the prices, which means you can get a nice house for dirt cheap.

What is the American motor vehicle industry?
>>
Here's the ultimate redpill.

America is a a multi-ethnic, multi-racial country with no standard expectations as to what it means to be a good neighbor.

If all that separates you from some ghetto black or a Mexican is an apartment wall, you will likely be miserable. Try having Tyrone next door blasting rap until 2 AM when you have work the next day because that bum doesn't understand the concept of having to get up early due to unemployment. And talking doesn't work. Some of these ghetto thugs are so sensitive that they'll want to fight you for simply telling them to turn it down.

I'm not a /pol/tard. But the reality is that suburbanization is popular in America because it's de facto self-segregation in a country where people have nothing in common. Europeans, as your nations become more diverse, you'll soon understand.

It is compromised mainly of large 4 bedroom houses, a few mansions here and there and a large business Park. Not bad if your life revolves around the area, but it's quite far from the city and most interesting parts of Sydney.

Of course we understand, the difference is our lower classes usually belong to the same ethnic group. Try telling whatever chav-like creature to lower the volume and you'll get the same reaction.

There are poor violent neighborhoods in europe too and in smaller countries without much immigration they will have the same kind of people.

I just downloaded Sim City 4. It's a shame how the modern city builder declined.

Sim City 2013 is shit. Just shit.

Cities Skylines is a great game and by many considered to be the true successor to Sim City 4. The problem is that it's a Paradox game, complete with Paradox tier DLC policies.

I'll stick to Sim City 4. Anyone know any good mods?

I can tell you're actually American.

Most Europeans don't really care about house size; it's not a status symbol like it is in America.

Sure, if your house is the size of a shed, then you'll probably be sad, but most houses aren't. Most houses are liveable in Europe.
>>
>>79263972
Yeah, that makes sense. American suburbs don't have the same intricate designs: it's all blocks and lines.

Oh shut up, most people would prefer to live in a larger house than a smaller one if given the choice. Though there is a turning point where a house gets so big, the extra space is useless and only makes cleaning all the more tedious (extreme example: nobody needs 20 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms).

How do you even live in Venice? Isn't it a just tourist attraction and overpriced hotels by now?

>>
>>79282298
Not really. I live in what can be considered a suburb and I have two supermarkets within 5 minute walking distance, and another two in about 15 minute walking distance. Europe has an advantage in this regard because it's old (and I don't mean it in the WE HAVE CULTURE BECAUSE WE HAVE OLD BUILDINGS SENSE). The "groundwork" for our cities is centuries if not millennia old. These cities were meant for ancient, medieval or early modern man and therefore not built with cars in mind, roads were built 'around' the initial man-centric design. In the United States, especially the more West you go (and the newer cities become) this is generally not the case. Many of these cities and especially suburbs (like these >>79249419) are built with cars in mind. If you live there and don't have a car, you're utterly fucked because you can't even do groceries. Cars become a neccessity for the people living there (even if they're relatively poor) to get to megamalls like this >>79249220. I'm not an American, but I imagine the situation is a lot more bearable on the East Coast because it's been inhabited by civilized folk for about 300 years. The model of American style suburbs simply favors car manufacturers, oil refineries et cetera to a ridiculous extent. I can't even imagine needing to step in a car every time I have to do groceries. In fact I don't even own a car because everything I really need on a daily basis is within walking distance, and the train system in the Netherlands is... passable.

If European countries were to suddenly double in size and have loads of unspoilt land, I imagine our governments would be doing the exact same thing as in America.
