Never understood why they even make that choice.
Even if the pronounciation is different the way words are spelt stays the same.
Even true for Huehue Portuguese and Euro Portuguese. Vastly different sound but the words are exactly the same

Frankly american makes sense for all of these examples.
Especially torch (since it isn't a fucking burning stick)
and mobile phone since a battery operated landline phone is mobile too but doesn't work on cellular network.
